Hi - so I have created a Gustov Forum where people can connect. You get there by clicking here: http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/forumdisplay.php?f=6
Be careful with what personal info you post but it is there to keep in touch. Server won't go down regardless of storm - I keep in safe buried deep beneath the Fair Grounds in a secret bunker.

For the big questions:
Why don't we get to party in the secret bunker during Jazz Fest?
Which stage sits atop this bunker?

While we are watching and lighting candles, chanting or praying, something concrete we can do would be send some money to the Red Cross. Try as I might, I can't get a link to actually load, so you on your own, but it will be worth the effort.
Maybe someone more tech savvy can make that happen?

If you want to help disaster victims in general then by all means give to the RED CROSS however if you are interested in impacting and supporting specifically New Orleans and the gulf coast then you might want to wait,
As a former local red cross board member and 30 year volunteer I am thinking you may want to know before making a donation....that the red cross presence is already established in the region and they are spending money that was generated in response to whatever disaster came before ...If you want your dollars to go to whatever any real need is in New Orleans wait and donate to the grassroots real deal organizations that will actually have a practical and real contribution to victim needs...
I whole heartedly believe in the RED CROSS volunteers but the overhead of the organization etc eats up alot of your donated dollars...and the system is designed to pay it forward so the money given in sympathy to Gustav will most likely be spent in the future on the next one....

Good point, D.
Meanwhile, I got this from Levees.Org this morning.
Hi,
Before the power goes out, I want to share this
important note with you.
I asked Ken McCarthy, who has been advising us on
Internet issues and produced "The Katrina Myth"
for us, to write up advice on how members can most
help New Orleans, Louisiana and levees.org (http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=4tgvLNnri4L%2Bdtt%2FZ1NpnC63xikfiRA6) at this time.
Here is what he wrote:
=====================================
I've received a number of e-mails from
people sharing what they are doing
to promote the new levees.org (http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=fqexJHMx8O1YWwZwBKmI7i63xikfiRA6) video.
The good news is we successfully made
the leap from top rated News video of the
day to top rated News video of the week.
That's a good thing because otherwise
the video's high visibility would have evaporated
from YouTube today.
It is VISITS and people who rate and comment
on the video that are keeping us afloat right now.
YouTube is a ferociously competitive
environment and it's very easy to disappear.
So, as always, we need more traffic...
*** Four very simple ways to help
1. Simply write friends, family, colleagues
anyone in your circle and let them know
about the video. (the link going straight to
to the vido is the below at end of the letter)
2. If you have a blog, please post the LINK
straight through to the YouTube page so
that people can rate, comment on, favorite
and forward the video to others.
(Note: you must be registered with YouTube
to rate the video.)
All this helps the video's ratings.
3. Even better than posting to your own
blog is considerately posting info about
the video and its link to OTHER blogs,
especially high traffic ones.
Don't just "dump and run." Read the blog,
find a thread where comment is relevant,
and post there.
4. WRITE directly to news outlets, people with
high traffic blogs and anyone else you
think may have significant mailing lists and
ask them to view and then spread the
word about the video.
Put your thinking cap on. We all have
more contacts and influence than we realize.
*** Why is this so important?
First, our message's visibility depends
on a constant flow of fresh visitors to
the YouTube page.
We have no other platform at this time.
Second, from what I can see, no one else
is putting the "levees message" out there:
Instead, here's what I see on the news:
* The federal government endlessly congratulating
itself on how well coordinated it is - this time...
* The news gushing about the huge military
presence in New Orleans to prevent looting...
* The weather people talking about the minute
meteorological details of the storm...
But NO ONE is explaining to folks that
the biggest threat to New Orleans is levee
failure - an entirely solvable problem.
"The Katrina Myth" does the job of clearing up
the flood of misinformation, puts people on
the side of New Orleans, and directs
them to join levees.org (http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=8fMvTZPc09mUHTuK7tIwQS63xikfiRA6).
All good things and much needed right now.
If we succeed, the message will retain its current
high visibility on YouTube and we MAY get
some mass media attention for it.
If we fail, the message will disappear from YouTube
and I don't know who else is going to give us a platform.
You are the only source of help for this promotion.
There is no one else.
Every little bit - even sending one e-mail to one
friend - helps
Here's the link again...do your best.

I had a bad experience last year with Red Cross during the Katrina debacle. We were planning to bring a truck full of items to one of the distribution centers published in the paper. Then the Red Cross said they no longer wanted those locations published. They said they were afraid too many evacuees would descend on those locations! Then, the paper defied them and published the locations anyway. We called the Red Cross, and they said don't bring 'stuff'. Just send money!!!!
We brought our truck load of stuff anyway, and I thought the volunteers and the evacuees were going to cry! They were without WATER and diapers and all kinds of things they desperately needed. And were so grateful to us for bring things they could actually use!! And all the Red Cross could tell us was 'Send Money'. It really left a bad taste in my mouth regarding R.C. But the volunteers are angels!

Just received this from common ground relief in new orleans: Common Ground Relief is presently planning how best to assist the residents of the Gulf Coast Region recover from the effects of Hurricane Gustav.
In the coming days we will continue to provide updates as to our plans to support the residents not only of New Orleans, but also to communities to the west of us in areas such as Houma in the clean up and rebuilding effort.
Interested volunteers with the following experience/skills are particularly encouraged to send us an application. (Applications can be found online at www.commongroundrelief.org/volunteer)
trained medics
disaster and emergency response
independent media
tree-cutters
those who volunteered in the Gulf Coast region following Hurricane Katrina
If you have other skills that you believe may be useful to the relief effort, please email commongroundvolunteers[at]gmail.com
If your skills lie in areas other than those listed above, and are less applicable to immediate on the ground assistance, but you wish to assist in the ongoing recovery of the Gulf Coast region in the wake of Hurricane Gustav, we still need your help.
Please consider holding a fundraising and awareness event in your community in order to raise funds to support Common Ground Relief's efforts in the Gulf Coast as well as your local groups supporting survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
To make an online donation please visit www.commongroundrelief.org
Or take a look at the list of www.commongroundrelief.org/gustav

Common Ground the United Way nice suggestions :) have had positive experiences with both organizations...hope others have too?
Thanks for word that Kirk and Miss Vanessa are together and safe :)
It is upseting to think about the artists on the Friends of New Orleans tour and on other tours around the country who could not get home to family before the storm...so knowing they were together makes me smile...
