Isn't that fantastic Stynger? I guess they've expanded the size of grounds for that stage too. This is gonna be a smokin' fest!!!!

I am trying to figure out where they expanded it to???

the expansion news makes me a little nervous. I enjoyed the "tween" size of that end, and am one of the curmudgeon types who don't go near the Acura stage for any reason. Maybe I'll just become the next Mr. Eddie.
Hoping that the second big stage will spread the bna's (and festers) out a bit.

I suppose they will push the SoCo stage up into the corner where the first aid station is???

I'm confused. Is the Sprint Stage the same as the SoCo Blues stage?
I'm confused. Is the Sprint Stage the same as the SoCo Blues stage?
Correct. it was Sprint for many years and then SoCo last year. This year ??
Just to make things more confusing, this year, SoCo is sponsoring a different stage: the Bles Tent, which used to be located at the bottom far-left of the map Ohio posted, next to the Gospel Tent.

And i think the tent expansions are for blues and jazz, not gospel. There was extra space around the food booths and contemporary crafts just inside the sauvage entrance. so rosetree may be correct in thinking they may squish the ccrafts a little.

From the TP article (http://swag.livejournal.com/33355.html):
The Kids Tent is resurrected, as is the newly christened Southern Comfort Blues Tent. The Gospel and Jazz tents are larger, part of a redesign of that corner of the grounds.

Other than the renaming of stages etc., isn't the configuration this year similar to 2005, except Blues and Jazz tents are bigger, potentially forcing a reset of some of arts areas etc around Sauvage entrance? I don't have it but maybe for comparison, we post the 2005 map?

Hey Donna! I was just on my way out to see you in Calgary this morning, but Air Canada cancelled my flight (and the one after) due to freezing rain here in Toronto. I was going to head to Canmore to do a little skiing until Tuesday, but that ain't gonna happen...
I'll be back your way late February though!

Well that's a rip Ross! I am in Toronto the nights of Feb 12 and 13. Back in Calgary week of February 19...let me know when you are coming thru. Some good shows if you're interested and natch, the tix are the right price for you my pal. Ruthie Foster with a band Feb 22 at the fabulous atmospheric Knox United Church. Bryan was looking at Henry Butler as an opener, I don't know if that worked out. Van Morrison Feb 27 at Saddledome. Let me know asap if Van is a possibility.

Donna, let's try to get together for a cocktail when you're here in Toronto, okay? I'm heading off to Las Vegas (AKA Ross Vegas) from the 3rd to the 10th of Feb., but I definitely won't be going anywhere when you are in town! As for me getting out to Calgary/Canmore, I'm not exactly when I'll be out there...I'm still not over the thrill of the ride to the airport and back this morning! :>(
Regardless, I'm really looking forward to my trip to Vegas. I plan to see both Prince and Tower of Power, and we'll put those wonky feet of mine to the test...a dry run for a potential fest appearance, if you will!
I'm actually trying to cram in as much travel as i can in the next month or two. I purchased one of those Air Canada unlimited North America passes for $800 inc. taxes (!), and it allows me an unlimited number of flights across North America for January and February. As long as I fly on a Tuesday or a Saturday, I can go just about anywhere...
Anyone wanna visit from me? I'll add you to the itinerary!

ROSS! We're gonna be in Vegas next weekend 2/2 - 2/4. Dumb Tourist will be there too. Let's meet up! Where are you staying? What are your plans?
$800 unlimited flight pass for 2 months! Wow, I've never heard of such a thing. That's a steal. Wish airlines I flew did that . . .

Ooooo, Tower of Power? That will be awesome Ross, I want a full report. Especially if your feet can manage to keep up to Amy's! I'll call you when I hit Toronto on the 12th and see what we can cook up. I'm at the Royal York, TOfest and I are going to try and have a drink too as he works closeby. Just let me know when you are Calgary bound Ross, you are always welcome in my town!

I guess I just wanted it to be an enlargement of the blues tent.

Was reading thru swag's blog articles and found this farther down in the TP article: "We're responding to demand," Davis said. "With major headliners like Herbie Hancock, jazz was a bigger attraction than the (old) tent could accommodate. It overflowed. Same thing with the Blues Tent. So we've upgraded."
It would make more sense if it's the blues tent.

maybe they filled in that dip in the middle of the field, making it high enough to actually see over the folks in front of you.

I was thinking the very same thing when I read your post, Hon. A video screen means more blocked views, more campers, more of all the things that make the Acura something to avoid. If they feel the need, I'd rather that they did it to the Congo Square stage where the congestion would be less of a problem.

i"m having those same feelings, heyhon and blitzzzz. I avoid Acura to a fault and now it looks like i may have to be an in the middle kind of girl. Only the cubes know for sure.
With it's current configuration, Congo already has sound bleed issues with Acura.
As to the Sprint stage, they already started moving bigger acts over there 2 years ago. In '05, it hosted the Meters first Fest reunion, and Elvis Costello. For both of those, the crowd density was Acura-like, lawn filled all the way to the back, and some folks setting up on the track dirt.

All true, Swag. The bigger they go, the more bleed issues they're gonna have. I think a bigger Sprint/Soco stage is going to cause real circulation problems as it will effectively block that pathway and force folks into the middle. Sad, too, that the Blues Tent returns. Nice to see a dedicated Blues stage, but that tent was never a good idea and even if it's bigger it won't be any more comfortable or conveniently located.

the ol' HOB stage was such a good thang.... took it for granted... have never been a fan of the tent,.. way too many rule mongers... a very sterile place for such great music......
Always found the Sprint stage to be the perfect size...

I'm with ya, paulc. I don't visit the blues tent alot for those reasons but I smile when I think about Olu Dara's set there a few years back. The tent nazis were in full force but couldn't stop olu from leaving the stage and leading a second line thru the front of the tent. Permission to get up and dance. oh yeah!

You're not kidding. Here is the Spring Stage the day of the Meters, setting up our site first thing in the gate:

Here is the same spot, after about 2-3 acts. It filled up FAST!

Unfortunately, they're not coming this year. But in 2007 I'm going to push for a big Atlanta contingent and get all of these wussies back to fest, babies and all!
You should see Will - what an adorable baby and amazingly laid back. They bring him to parties and he just hangs out with the rest of us, watching and thinking wise thoughts (or giggling).

i love the additions made to this map. to Liuzza's is also where we park. so i can give it to our Rookies (if we have this year) and our drunks (we have several of those).
someday i hope to learn how to do swell stuff like that.
