I need to get a couple of bottles of wine, a red and a white, for my boss who is retiring on Friday. I have to get something locally as time is of the essence, so I am looking for some advice from all you wine aficionados. I am in the process of finding out what type of red or white he likes. I know he and I have discussed Cakebread before, which I really like. We're looking to spend probably $40-50 per bottle.
Any advice?

For red, could get a nice Barolo (Italian) or a really nice Chianti from the Tuscany region. If you spent about 30-40 for the bottle, it will be a good one.

Hola, PG!
Here's some input from a California-to-Louisiana wino transplant:
- Stag's Leap Cab. (Martin Wine Cellar, Dorignac's or Cost Plus World Market)
- Hess Select Cab. (Same Stores)
- Seven Deadly Zins Zin. (Same Stores) Zinfandels are really great right now.
Martin Wine Cellar can also put together really nice gift baskets including wine and some other goodies that might make a great retiring gift . . . :D
That's just my brief input - if you had a larger budget, I'd recommend a bottle of Silver Oak Cab., but that runs about $100-150.

These guys took care of our train ride home. A nice Italian man who loves to talk wine!! If you go there, definitely take their suggestions. I had picked a couple of wines I knew and he said "Try this instead" .... glad I listened. We had a yummy trip home!!

Another great shop is in the ByH2O on Poland called Bacchanal.

I agree Martin's and Vieux Carre W&S and World Market are awesome as well.
My suggestion is always Cakebread for a great Chard or Pinot

I would recommend something from the California Central Valley region...particularly Paso Robles. Justin vineyards is a favorite.

Cakebread Chardonnay (see if you can find Anderson Valley!) and Vino Nobile di Montipulciano (Tuscan red that is, IMO, better and less costly than Brunello di Montalcino).

There's a big push on Albarino's right now (Spanish white). Similar to Sauvignon Blanc but bigger. It's a good summer wine.
Ravenswood Reserve Zinfandel is pretty good, too. In fact, just found a bottle we didn't know we had .... great with lamb chops.
Coppola wines are surprisingly good as well.

My 2 cents.... grew up in Sonoma Co. so those are the wines I know best. A good Fume Blanc and a Pinot Noir would be my choices.
