Not as amusing as none, but perhaps more useful. I thought I would pull together the various opinions about shoes.

What are your shoe recommendation for fest?

I had pretty good luck with my Crocs last year, except for one episode of unfortunate slipping in the mud. They are comfortable, supported my foot and are easy to slip off so I can wiggle my toes or dance barefoot on the grass.

Got some new ones ---

As a diabetic, shoes are VERY important at fest for me. For years, the best shoe I've worn at fest is a Rockport walking shoe (the kind old men wear). It's also important for them to be well worn in. I've found these are the best for all the surfaces I walk at fest. I'm not a stage hanger. I walk the track, the walkways, the concrete, and the grass/mud, and I put in lots of miles everyday.

Absolutely Keens (http://www.zappos.com/n/es/d/722554067/page/1.html).

I was having ever increasing problems with heel spurs....until last year when I got my first pair of Newport H2 just before fest after which, when I had worn them for week, I quickly ordered another pair of Newports...things immediately started to get better and then I got two more pair of different styles of Keens for XMAS.

I had tried Rockports and New Balance and Clark's (when they were still good) for sneaks and sandals with all manner of heel pillows and other cushions. But for the first time in a couple of years, I was able to leave the fairgrounds with my size 13s feeling just tired...not like they were ready to be amputated.

Plus it's great to be able to walk as soon as I wake up again!

my husband swears by his crocs .. he wears them for fishing trips ...
I swear by my birkenstocks ... I have 4 pair in different colors. They have finally started making more fashionable shoes so I stick to them pretty much. Although I like my Tevas & Dansko but for long days ... I do Birks and will be packing them for JF:) .

oh man, I don't even know anymore....my right foot is all messed up. I tried Chacos last year and my feet were so confused and f*cky that I couldn't wear them. Crocs have been okay but if it r*ins, your foot starts sliding in them AND you start sliding. I don't know what the heck I'm going to do this year. I have an arch problem that causes me to walk on the outside of my right foot to compensate. My Dr. gave me NSAIDS to deal with it and it seems to be a bit better but man, I'm real worried this year....for MG and for fest. I don't know what I should try anymore. You bet I'll be studying this thread for info.....

I too have arch issues - plantar facitis (sp?) had cortizone shots PAINFUL! I don't recommend ... I've birthed babies without pain medication and the shots hurt worse! Got custom inserts($400.00:eek: ) for shoes and those are helpful but I still like my birks. Me feet get dirty but hell I'd rather be comfy with 7/11 feet than in pain all day.

I ordered them direct from the Crocs website. They are not available retail in Canada anywhere I could find. Still, the price wasn't bad and they FedEx'ed them so I didn't get hit with any duty coming cross the border.

bluedog you are hilarious!!!! The flip flops are cute Amy. I'm looking at the keens venice in pink...so cute and the reviews on zappos look great for people with foot problems. I'm thinking maybe rotating these, with crocs like Saturns (found pink ones on ebay :), and hopefully finding a comfortable pair of flip flops. Keens have some I may look into further. No screwing around with my footwear this year. I hear ya on the wanting to amputate your feet Michelino. It was HELL last year and I lost the whole Meters show at CAC last year cuz i needed to sit. It was brutal. Had to take percocet to get through Dragon Smoke after the patry last year too.

I'm so excited because my plantar fascitis is almost healed. I've been taking mobic-an antiinflammatory -that works much better than the others i've tried and doing lots of foot stretching. I also wear one of those stretchy ace bandages every day. I tried heel inserts but it raises my foot too much. the bandage is supportive. I can now wear merrells to work instead of having to wear NB every day. I'm going to pull my keens out because i adore them. they're blue and like the ones you've chosen, corona. swag, the 2 strap style in the pix gives more aeration than the original 3 strap.

You still may have to try a couple pairs to get them right. But Zappos is so great at exchanging, it's easy.

And until you get the right size down (and they differ from model to model), if they are on sale, I'd think about ordering an extra pair 1/2 s size bigger if they have it and then send the pair back that doesn't fit. Also, Zappos definitely does price matching...if you find the same pair cheaper somewhere else on the web, just call them.

Note: (obviously not to you Lis!) if you are 13 wide like myself, go right to the size 14s for the Newport styles

Nope, not a 13 Mich! lol
I ordered a 1/2 size up in these.....$94 (gulp) but I love them. I'll mess with them and they do free shipping back (I have a friend in Michigan who I get stuff delivered to) if they don't fit. I think I'm going to grab these too....

Yes, it does make them a little warmer than other sandals, but it also makes them great for hiking...including through small stream beds or on gravelly roads where open toed sandals might pick up stones every so far.

Corona, I bought Keen Newports last year before fest and they bothered me for the first day only but they were fantastic from there on in. As to the closed toebox, it was a nice feature with the scratchy "grass" on the infield. Also, kept out shallow mud guck etc. so even on a damp day your feet were dry. You are right to buy them a 1/2 size bigger. They will look quite boat-like when you see them, as they seem so wide, but that's why they are comfy. I didn't have a blister on my heel, which is usually what happens to me 90% of the time with a sandal that's not a flip flop style. I have a bunch of Crocs, all ordered from their website, but as soon as they are wet, they don't feel safe, and you will tense up your feet and calves constantly to compensate, which is not good.

And I am sure I have a foot problem with a name, but I am afraid to find out, so my best pal Advil goes everywhere with me, and unfortunately function is beating fashion for me pretty much 100% of the time, unless I am going somewhere semi formal.

I have had cruddy knees forever from some great skiing escapades over the years, and a Dr. gave me a great tip once. If you are going to be on your feet consistently for several days, then switch up the shoes so no consistent rub points appear. And start taking Advil three days before the event, so the level in your bloodstream builds up, take it through the event, and then taper off when you get home over three days. Once foot pain gets a hold, it takes a long time for the Advil to actually impact it if you start from nothing.

And, I have to say taking Glucosamine, Chondritin and MSM makes a tremendous difference, so try it...easy over the counter supplement.

And that's my two feet worth!;)

:) You can go to REI and try on most of the mentioned shoes and then some and the staff is really helpful. I'm a Crocs gal myself. I live in them at work - my feet are still happy after 12 hours in the flippin emergency room.
A great remedy for fest feet and easing achey feet is Epsom salts and warm water soaks in the tub or foot bath.. ( You can pick up a bag at Walgreens for about $1:50 )

if you can afford it, go to a professional shoe and have your feet "analyzed". get the best shoes/boots you can and break them in now. function over fashion. you can do a reasonable amount of water proofing to them. and they sell rubbers to go over your shoes for wet/muddy days (back home - never at JF ;-)
my BF swears by his hiking boots. better warm feet, than a bad back.

WW Gal, you mention the best advice of all. It's something I would suggest to newbies. Don't wear the same shoes ALL the time. If you can switch shoes every day, a couple of times a day, you are going to be taking the best care of your feet. Even your favorite and most comfortable shoes rub and wear in the same spots. Any change even to another pair of the same shoes will help. I have to make myself switch shoes when I go to leave for the fest, but it has helped.

Absolutely. My hubby makes fun of me because I am packing so many pairs of shoes, (and I don't have a shoe fetish, really! ;)) but I have to keep changing shoes so I don't get blisters and calluses.

i cant do the thing between the toes.
i have had great success with naturalizer sandals. comfy, supportive, cute enough, long lasting and you can usually pick them up on sale around $40, year end clearance gets them down to $10-20.
but my feet & sandals get filthy at fest. must be a combination of the way i walk kicks up dust and my sunscreen retaining the grit. sometimes i have to wash my feet before i get in the car.
i switch between sandles and good athletic shoes - if they're good for aerobics, they're good for dancing.

Thanks for the word about Keens. I'm going to try them. I also have a heel spur that flairs up occasionally. I've been lucky that it hasn't happened at Fest, but it did last year when walking around the Quarter shopping. It's hell getting old.

Last year I wore Crocs and Teva's and didn't have any problems. But I have to agree that Crocs are slippery in the rain. But it's also nice to realize that it doesn't matter how wet and muddy they get, I can just clean them off in the shower.

Also, from one who has a ton of shoes, Zappo's is the greatest for finding cute shoes; they have very cheap ones all the way to ridiculous and their free shipping and easy exchanges are the best. I highly recommend them. Since I live in the middle of nowhere, I depend on them to get cute shoes because there is nothing here.

Corona, I'm so glad you saw this. You won't regret the Advil regimen. I manage events for a living and am not young, nor skinny, so taking care of the feet is a absolute must. Doing the Advil regime, I can be on day three of a major event, with miles walked each day and have only minimal discomfort. The young newbies on our team who didn't think they needed Advil and won't wear anything sensible are in agony, and us veterans who know this trick are still moving. Give the Glucosamine a shot too, it's done wonders for me. And I am SO jealous, those pink Keens are so cute, mine are battleship grey, but they do the trick. Got me through last year's Jazzfest and four days of volunteering at our local folk fest.

Here's to happy feet!

Stlbarb, I cannot do the between the toe thing either. Makes me crazy! I carry a cheap pair of sandals should rain come up while at the grounds, then if I ruin them, I chuck em out. Will never forget wading through 6 inches to a foot of water to get a cab in 2004, totally ruined my most comfy Clarks.

Those are cute, too. But I tend to have trouble with little straps like that, especially if my feet get dirty and sand, etc. sticks to my feet. Then I could see those straps really hurting. Maybe I get so dirty because of the dust when you dance at Fais Do Do.

lol, the dress. The dress I'll never be able to fit in again; I barely got into it then! I shucked that thing faster than a starvin' cajun eating an erster. Oh, it was brown and cream. how many pairs of shoes do you own that you have never worn? i know i have several. when i first met my bf, the number of pairs of shoes i owned scared him.
I 've got a few Barb and a ridiculous amount of shoes, especially boots! It is a problem lol...I've been getting into the purse thing more the last couple of years....that's starting to be an issue cuz where the hell do you store so many purses??? Is there a purse stacker like a shoe stacker?

ummmm......the thong thing.....roflmao!

Well if you want to talk about purses, zappos is to shoes as www.ebags.com (http://www.ebags.com) is to purses! Another dangerous site, but the prices are reasonable and comparable to or better than in the stores. I had bought this work purse in a department store that I totally loved - cell phone slot on the outside, tons of compartments inside. Went on ebags, found the exact style purse and ordered in two additional colors; then I was at a Filene's closing sale and found the exact purse in yet another color. I think I'm set with work bags for the next five years.

As for shoes, here's what I usually bring to Jazzfest:

At least two pairs of Crocs (my new favorite Fest footwear), 'cause I like to have different color options. Yes, they do get a bit slippery inside them during rain - but they're still THE most comfortablest shoes I've ever worn in over 11 years of festing!
At least one pair of Birkenstocks, for non-fest days or evening shows. I got really sunburnt/blistered feet one year wearing my Arizonas at Fest - so I don't wear those to the fairgrounds anymore.
My red cowboy boots for evening shows - 'nuff said.
A pair of closed toe shoes/hiking boots for volunteer work during the Daze in Between.
A pair of Keen Newports for some variety from the Crocs at the fairgrounds. However, these run small in the sizing - so if you're thinking about getting some of these (which I highly recommend - I use mine a lot for camping, rafting and kayaking), get a half-size larger than your normal shoe size.I have tried Chacos in the past, not as comfortable for a day of festing as I would have liked. I have a friend who wears her Dansko professional clogs to the fairgrounds, but those would be too hot and enclosed for my piggies. Not to mention, I like to keep my shoes as well-kept and in good condition as possible - and busy days at the Fairgrounds aren't necessarily conducive to that.

Hey Kitten, do I need to get my Keen sandals a half size bigger?

Yup, PC - you should indeed. Otherwise, the heel strap will cut into your Achilles (it's happened to me with at least two pairs of Keen Newport sandals, so this is from personal experience/discomfort).

I usually wear a size 7-7 1/2, but in these shoes - an 8 works perfectly for me!!! You can find Keens to try on (an EXCELLENT idea to ensure the best fit before ordering them on eBay - which is what I do, wink-wink) at REI, Nordstom, Track n' Trail, and the Walking Company . . . or you can visit their website at www.keenfootwear.com (http://www.keenfootwear.com) to find a specific dealer in your local area.

I am a big fan of these shoes (and I know three disgruntled former Keen bigwigs from when it began - and I still like the shoes, dagnabit), but getting the correct fit is key and can be a bit of a challenge, however it's worth it!

Love,

ZDK (The Shoe Ho) :D

So yall gave me shoe fever. I decided to try some on and I had to travel to Little Rock to do that. I was on a mission for keens and merrells. Went to the New Balance store to talk about the pair I bought a few months ago that kind of hurts now that my plantar fascia has healed. Talked to a guy who knows his stuff. He checked out my foot and said I have a high arch that pronates(goes flat basically). He showed me how he could bend my merrells practically in half, which means not much support for the foot. Ended up in their next door store looking at some great shoes-mostly European brands. Lis, and anyone else with plantar issues, check out Finn, Dansko, romus, and NAOT. All over $100 but 25% off today! Wooohooo! Got some clogs but still looking for sandals. AND check this out: 60 day guarantee. If I decide 2 months from now that these just don't work for me, I can return them after wearing them! [

The Born sandals I bought for fest last year have a really good, high arch support and feel so good. The Keen Newports I wore were tight around one ankle, causing it to swell in the heat. I might try stretching the ankle on them, the rest of the fit feels fine. And they're a lovely bright green.

Shoe store dude said if you overpronate, which I do, you should not be able to bend your shoe in half, which he did to my merrell. I love my merrells but I hate plantar fascitis.

VWGal
02-04-2007, 04:43 PM
Funkkjunkie, I didn't know that! And as an overpronator, I ought to. Was it because we OP'ers need to have something that keeps our pronation to a minimum?

I've been single for a while now, thinking that being prone for an overly long time is prolly something I would want! ;)

Corona
02-04-2007, 04:51 PM
what the heck is over-pronate?

VWGal
02-04-2007, 05:00 PM
For a number of reasons, us overpronators roll inwards -- meaning that if you looked at our feet from behind they'd roll toward the middle, almost no arch visible at all if you were to look at the insides of our feet from the side.

Did that make sense? It's primarily genetic, my whole family over pronates, not having great arch structures. We also have another genetic curse: cankles!

saturn
02-04-2007, 05:00 PM
what the heck is over-pronate?

It is turning your ankle toward the inside as you walk - we all do it to some degree when we walk. Over-pronating is rolling your foot to the inside too much. You can tell if you over-pronate if the heel of your shoe wears off more quickly on the inner side.

VWGal
02-04-2007, 05:05 PM
Saturn, I think you did a better job than me to describe over pronation.

Corona
02-04-2007, 05:13 PM
what's the best kind of shoe to check that out with? Sneakers? I've been suspecting that I roll in because when my arch starts to really hurt I over-compensate by leaning on the outside part of my foot. Does that make sense? Having said that, since being on the naproxyn treatment from the doc, my foot pain is pretty much gone...is this something that flares up and then goes away?

VWGal
02-04-2007, 05:25 PM
Corona, I think overpronation can contribute to plantar fascitis. I have runners (Saucony Grid) that compensate for some pronation, however most people I know where their pronation has caused foot pain get orthotics that are custom made to correct that issue for them. I should be getting them, as apparently the longer you leave this problem the less opportunity you have to fix it.

Somehow orthotics and Keens just don't do it for me, but one day I'll be the old lady at Jazzfest in nurse shoes with wonking big orthotics if I don't admit that I have a problem!

Wow, this is such a great thread!!! That's my plan- to change my shoes each day or so and I LOVE the advice about the ibuprofen a few days before and after. I'll definitely do that....starting with Mardi Gras. I'm gonna bring the new shoes (at least the Keens) to give them a try. Something has to work cuz I can't go through what I went through last year!

i have a friend who works for gastro.... doctors, and she will not allow us to take ibuprofen or tylenol within 12 hours of drinking (before or after). she says the drugs are hard on the liver which is already busy processing the alcohol. i could not find data on that for ibprofen, but i did find:
If you drink more than 3 alcoholic beverages a day, ibuprofen may increase your risk of stomach bleeding. Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds). Ibuprofen can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may result.
its pretty well known to avoid tylenol & alcohol.

I thinkthat's why you got it., oh girl of the bare feet. this is what shoe dude said: When youdon't give your foot the support it needs, the p. fascia, which runs fromthe heel along the bottom of the foot, stretches to compensate. So happy to hear your meds are working. And yes, p. fascitis can come and go.

From what I understand, going barefoot or wearing shoes with no support can contribute to the development of it.

However, for toddlers and small children, going barefoot actually helps them develop the musculature of the foot and is recommended when it is safe to do so. Shoes with firm support are not particularly good for children.

I think some of us were probably not given the opportunity to develop good musculature in childhood, which may be why we have trouble now.

Things to watch out for are cigarette butts that are still alive, gum, and like Barb said, bee stings. I got so many of those as a kid that I think I just got over them.

I will go barefoot as often as possible, even at fest. My preferred fest feetwear are a pair of Tevas I've had for like 7 years. Every year, a friend (who buys Wal-mart shoes) checks in with me to see if they are still going strong. They are.

That was funny !!

My advice is to wear shoes that you can take off easily - because there is nothin' like listening to music with your toes in the grass......

sneakers - nothing too fancy - something that can get mud on 'em if necessary etc. Crocs make my feet sweat (yes, a collective eeewweeee did she have to tell us that )....and teevas are great too...

They are a little warmer than you might think...the regular "Newport" is not as synthetic and a little cooler but it is not as water proof either.

Well, I've found no problem with several pairs of the original newbuck Newports in water - and I've worn them sea kayaking, whitewater rafting/kayaking and I wash them in the washing machine . . .

The only real caviat I would offer after years of wearing them (I was working at REI when Keen's were first introduced - and BOY, did we think they were weird-looking) is that they can cause some foot odor and they run about a 1/2 size small - which causes the heel strap to cut into the achilles (yeow).

However, I would DEFINITELY support making them the first Holy Official Footwear of the New Orleans Jazzfest/George Threadheads™ (I nominate Crocs as number two)!! :D

I love my keens. I'm gonna try them out at fest. Usually wear new balance for long periods of standing.

I love my Birkies, Teva Mush thongs and Chacos. My tootsies need room to breathe. I don't care for closed toe shoes. In fact, I don't like shoes at all. I know it's hard for some to believe that a female doesn't have a passion for shoes, but I would rather be barefoot whenever possible. That's why I own like 20 pair of flip flops and sandals. :) OK, so maybe I do like shoes...;)

My Keen's came & I'm thrilled. The half size up was spot on and they fit perfectly. I received them 24hrs after ordering them from Zappos, can't beat that. I'm going to wear them around the house tonight to get used to them
The little nubbies under the ball of the foot feel like a little massage with each step! :)

I am thrilled that Saturn revived this thread and will prolly give Mich his very own crawfish bread for recommending Keen's! I have horrible problems with my feet and alsp knee pain. I read about 2 dozen of the reviews and both those problems were addressed. They look like they have great support that my new balance with Dr. Scholl's insert can't give me. Anyway, I ordered the Newport H2 sandals:

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p136/ibjamn50/keens.jpgI tried them last year, and yes they have great support for a sandal, but NOT the support of New Balance...

Mix it up..polka dots...I hate old looking nails too. Seem to cover up much of old stuff but the half-eye glasses are a must!

Honey, mine are beyond anything polish would cover. :D

I disagree. Maybe it depends on what you need the support for. I have been buying and wearing New Balance for 25 years..gone through like 15-20 pairs...Originally my sister used to buy them right from the factory outlet in MA for me. I still have at least three good pairs ( sneakers, walking shoes and hikers) but when the heel spurs flared up, I had to supplement the support with additional inserts ...something I have never had to consider with the Keens. I took the Keens sandals hiking last summer and they held up great..although I could have used a little more ankle support when the trail got steep. This is not to knock New Balance...(although there are two types now : cheap ones and good ones, where there were once only good ones), I have ALWAYS appreciated that Nbs are made in widths and sizes that other sneakers don't match and this variety will keep me as a customer. BTW Keens makes than sandals.

As a practicing podiatric physician for the past 15 years, I'll try to provide a little help.

Birkenstocks are great for plantar fasciitis. If you've had custom orthotics made by a podiatrist and you like them and like orthotics, ask you doctor about making you custom Birks with the orthotics incorporated into them. The doc would send the molds of your feet to Langer who has an arrangement with Birkenstock to provide this.

EccoUsa.com is a very good place to online shop for quality sensible footwear.

Crocs have a special line of shoes available through your podiatrist for the diabetic patient and for the plantar fasciitis patients.

Diabetics should NEVER walk around the house or outside without enclosed shoes or without socks especially if the vascular or neurological systems are even slightly impaired. "It's what you don't feel that will hurt you".

Running and Runner's World Magazine have yearly "shoe review" issues which should be sought out prior to shopping for shoes. It will provide the latest models, prices and shoe qualities.

Many shoe manufacturers have websites that allow you to input your age, weight, activities, complaints, foot structures (high arch, neutral or flat foot) and it will spit out the model which are more appropriate for you.

Good websites to learn about foot problems are: footphysicians.com and apma.org

I hardly ever read the business pages, but when I saw this article yesterday, my eyes lit up. I made a bunch of copies of friends. Oh, would I love to be able to wear heels again, and maybe with these babies, I could.
