LMAO, you are soooo cute, Mark.
I won $100 through my job (most phone referrals) and so I went and bought me and my baby some new shooooooes today. I got me some brand spanking new Nikes and Chicklet some really cute Avias. And I still have $25 left over! I'm gonna apply that to my new Keen sandals. I need to go ahead and order those tomorrow before I spend it, lol.
I must have tried on about 10 pair of New Balance and they were okay but for some reason Nikes feel much better on my feet and a whole lot more comfy. The NBs seem to come up short in the toe area.
I love new shoes. :D

Got my Keens and my chaco flip flops! So cool. The Keens are perfection but the Chaco's are a bit tight in the strap. I got a size bigger cuz I read that on the reviews but they weren't kidding. They're leather so I'm walking around the house wearing socks with flip flops to see if I can stretch them out a bit lol! Big nerd :)
BTW Jenn, my Keens are a bit different then yours.....

So bummed for you ! My limited experience with Keans is that you need to try 'em on in a store....here's why - every pair seems to fit just a little different. Now I know that is *insane* - but they may have multiple manufacturing sites etc.
Generally, I like 'em. They take a bit to get used to - no doubt - but they are like tevas in that way. Like others have said - wear some socks and break 'em in.

I got a pair of those closed tow Keens for fest last year. They held up really well after a day of festing. Actually, I didn't even break them in before wearing them for fest and I didn't have any major problems. A couple of small blisters (on the little toes I think), but nothing major. I actually liked the closed toe because you didn't end up with cruddy fest feet and you didn't have to worry about anyone stepping on your open toesies. And they're easy to slip on & off for barefoot dancing. The only bad thing about the closed toe is that if you happen to get anything in your shoe, you have to take it off to get said item out. I don't remember actually having that happen at fest, though.

just remember, airline bags are limited to 50 pounds per checked bag, 40 for carry ons. $25-50 fee for overweight bags. spread the shoes among the bags - even sandals weight more than you would thing - pounds adds up quickly.

But i really like mine, the fit is good (nice wide toebox) and the look cute on me (what can i say, i'm cute..haha). I ordered some tevas at the same time and they were serious "no go's " and are going back to Zappos. I like that my toes are protected. I have diabetes and I'm super careful of my feet now, I can't even have any lil blisters. I'm breakin' my keen's in..but they are pretty comfortable. I take moleskin with me (the adhesive kind), I cut into strips and take the strips with me incase a shoe starts rubbing the wrong way. that helps a bunch...heya....thanks for the discussion, even though I lurked and didn't participate....i'm not naturally a shoe freak, but my mom is converting me...haha.

Not as amusing as none, but perhaps more useful. I thought I would pull together the various opinions about shoes.
What are your shoe recommendation for fest?
I had pretty good luck with my Crocs last year, except for one episode of unfortunate slipping in the mud. They are comfortable, supported my foot and are easy to slip off so I can wiggle my toes or dance barefoot on the grass.

Keens were cool but my feet failed bad. Have full blown Plantar's Fascitis in my right foot now. The pain was horrific so I drank like a fish and took pain pills so it would go away (not that isn't what I normally do even without foot pain ;) The Keens were by far the best shoe out of all the shoes I spent a ton of money on. Corona,
UGH !! Nothing worse than the plantar F. I had it for a year and a half - but you won't believe what worked for me. Trust me when I tell you - it's the most half-assed thing in the world but I swear on formerly agonizing feet that it worked.
Every single day - at work, at home, three, four times a day, take a golf ball (no kidding) and roll it around with your sore foot, from back to front etc. with slight pressure.
Now, I know your eyes are rollin' back in yo; head just like mine did two years ago  but I would never kid about this. It was so bad for me at one point that I couldn't walk.
I did this for a few weeks and immediately found relief - and kept doin' it for a while afterward. From what I now know - it does something to stretch out the muscles in the foot and relieve the whole agony thing.
Also - in a carrier oil (like massage oil) warm it up and put one or two drops of lavendar (it's really powerful) and rub it on your feet at the end of the day like once a week.
I know - it all sounds hairbrained - but I finally gave in to a friend of mine when I was at the end of my rope - and she got to say I told you so for a long time. In fact, funny - when I give her the rolled eyes about somethin' to this day she says - 'is this gonna be like the time when you suffered with plantar f. for a year and a half when it could have been resolved ??)...
try it.....and stick with it - at first it does nothin'...but it does work...

She reccomends "forcing" the oils into the body by applying moist heat after the oils are applied. She says even hopping in a hot tub works well, so long as you don't rub the oil off on the way in. I still say orthodics (and supportive high quality shoes like high-end New Balance) helped me more than anything...relief in a week! Hey, if we parked that thing close to the Fais Do Do, it would make a fabulous green room! We can raffle off the privileges to sit on the top in a rocking chair a la Granny Clampett. And now that we have Amy's news to celebrate, we'll just set her a nice spot right out on the back porch of our rolling orthopedic rest home. I'm thinking this is one fine idea...
I'm likin' this idea girls ...a lot!!!
oh man, I'll try ANYTHING! Going to find a golf ball tomorrow!
So only do the lavendar once a week? Do I buy it at the health food store? Lavendar oil right?
Thanks so much for the advice. I have 62 days to deal with this and I'm at fest for almost 2 weeks!!!:eek:I've used something like this, works like a golf ball but gets more area at once:

Keens were cool but my feet failed bad. Have full blown Plantar's Fascitis in my right foot now. The pain was horrific so I drank like a fish and took pain pills so it would go away (not that isn't what I normally do even without foot pain ;) The Keens were by far the best shoe out of all the shoes I spent a ton of money on. Gonna try the danskos funkkjunkie had on....I'm officially screwed for Jazzfest :(Another previous PF sufferer weighing in: here's all the things my chiropractor, podiatrist, personal trainers, friends, etc. recommended and I did them all -- I had my bout for 10 months. Tried the golf ball, foot stretches with the length of your foot pressed against a wall and leaning your body into the wall, cortisone injections prior to JF (helped a litte), heels hanging off a stair and stretching them down and then back up, Dr. Scholls DynaMax heel inserts (a cheap and very effective fix at ~$15.), wear supportive shoes/sneakers ALL THE TIME, EVEN AT HOME AND AT WORK with the Scholls' inserts, flex foot upward before getting out of bed or if you've been sitting for a while .... all these helped, but after 10 months of intermittent levels of pain, the very first time I got ultrasound at the chiropractor's office I walked out pain free! It was a miracle for me. Different things work for different people, but damn, if I had known to try the ultrasound sooner, that would have been great! (BTW, ultrasound didn't do jackshit for my tennis elbow, but my doc told me it's particularly effective on feet.) Good luck, sweetie.

I did a little literature search, and research shows that low-Dye taping is effective for fasciitis pain.
"In the short term, low-Dye taping significantly reduces the pain associated with plantar fasciitis."

Sounds like that's the idea. I gather from my reading that the taping prevents the movement of the bones and stretching of ligaments etc. that aggravate the inflammation.

Basically they are the joints where the main part of your foot joins your toes. The first is the joint to your big toe and fifth is the joint to you baby toe.

ummm....not the injection though...too painful and I don't think I'm quite there yet! So you like those arch supports huh? I just checked them out and may order them since it'll likely be at least a month for orthotics if prescribed by my doctor next week. Why the 3/4 vs. the full length? Just curious.
Btw, the golf ball therapy is heavenly :)

02-27-2007, 02:47 PM
The full length are $3-5 more. The forefoot extension is mostly just for cushioning in the ball of the foot. Runners and people with conditions such as sesamoiditis, capsulitis/bursitis, plantarflexed metatarsals, porokeratomas and/or callouses/pre-ulcerative lesions would benefit from the extension. Even better for these conditions are the Polysorb insoles (but that's a whole other thread). These are made of Neoprene (what wetsuits are made of and are very cushiony).
What's most important for PF is the firm plastic orthotic. It may be heat molded with a heat gun (be extremely careful) should you need a higher or lower arch for comfort. Most prefer to remove the manufacturer's insole and some leave it in. The extension takes up more room in the shoe. Sometimes they may squeak. Try baby powder or consider the ThinSole 3/4 orthotic (good also for boots, non-stilleto pump or men's dress shoe). http://spenco.com/product/507-thin-soles-34nbsplength
These are about $15 more than the regular.

Btw, the golf ball therapy is heavenly :)FWIW, I know at least 3 women who paid big bucks ($200+) for custom-made orthotics and hated them, found them extremely uncomfortable/painful, never wore them. I applaud my podiatrist for recommending the Dr. Scholls DynaMax heel inserts, which I continue to wear in my sneakers for walking and exercising. They're grey and not the gel type, give you good arch support, are available in the foot section of many chain drug stores, and are a cheap thing for try for $15.

Chronic pain sucks BIG TIME!! I have had two spine surgeries, before them I was in constant pain. Cortisone injections hurt a lil when you get them, but when it's done correctly you'll be free from pain.

I adore the keen clogs but I'm sending them back and will get them in brown for next fall. I'm also sending back the pink keen sandals that are just like yours because they are just like my blue ones. I'm trying to get different foot bases so I can mix it up and avoid the dreaded PF coming back. So that leaves the keen sandals with an open toe and 2 pairs of Naot brown leather sandals with open backs. I'm gonna pull out my chacos and see how they feel.

..was holding shoes for my mom!
Was poking around the Zappos site- I see that Earth brand is back with some contemporary styled shoes, still with the negative heel design. I used to love them back in the 70's. Kinda made you feel as if you were 'truckin'- like Mr. Natural! Their design is supposed to be easier on your feet, back, and joints. Might try a pair...

and pc, i will not be telling my mama how much my shoes cost. She taught me how to save $, not spend them! But if you got foot issues, you will pay any price to rectify the problem.

Check out these cheap, lightweight, portable "gardening boots" which I pack for JazzFest every year just in case of you-know-what. They have proven invaluable -- and I get mucho envy and compliments comparing me to the Keebler elves when wearing them over my shoes due to r**n to keep my feet dry when necessary and then just pull em off afterwards! If you get 'em, I'd opt for the larger size - makes it easier to stretch them over your shoes.

on a wet day i've found a 1 piece swimsuit with a quick drying skirt makes for a good outfit. so which boots would go best with this scenario for you?
and i own shrimp boots, 2 pairs like above - 1 black with pink hearts, 1 white with 3 colors of lip kisses on them, and a short striped pair. i always got compliments on my boots - but they're much more common now.
warning about the boots, they are warm on warm days (sweaty), you'll want socks. and they rubbed my fake tan off - on my calves and a straight line around the top. it was funny. i gave up that lotion tan stuff.

I have brought them in past years, but now I just bring a waterproof-breathable shell/poncho and wear footwear such as Crocs or Keens that are water shoes. However, I do also bring some sort of umbrella/parasol every day, r**n or sun - so that helps too!

Yes, I would like to see your checklist, Bonnie. I used to drive to fest, but had to start flying two years ago when I moved to VA. What a pain. Any help would be great. I always start out with enough for 4 suitcases and start eliminating from there!!!
Email address is terryc1227@hotmail.com.

Bon, I'll take a copy too. donna dot pahl at telus dot com Think you my deer!
Well, now we might have covered (or uncovered) the boob area after spending time on feet, socks, shoes, sandals, orthotics, plantar fascitis! Best thread drift on the www!
Corona, I understand orthotics are the answer to pf and frankly my feet have been asking the question for a long time, so I should get my achy feet off to a podiatrist next week.
Keep us posted, I hope they do the trick!

bluedog you are hilarious!!!! The flip flops are cute Amy. I'm looking at the keens venice in pink...so cute and the reviews on zappos look great for people with foot problems. I'm thinking maybe rotating these, with crocs like Saturns (found pink ones on ebay :), and hopefully finding a comfortable pair of flip flops. Keens have some I may look into further. No screwing around with my footwear this year. I hear ya on the wanting to amputate your feet Michelino. It was HELL last year and I lost the whole Meters show at CAC last year cuz i needed to sit. It was brutal. Had to take percocet to get through Dragon Smoke after the patry last year too.

These are the Keens I'm gonna buy. I think they're cute :)
I'm thinking I'll buy the red one's to go with my chili pepper fest dress. I love the idea of closed toes so I don't ding' em. I'm hoping I can wear something with a strap after this heel surgery. I've been wearing clog type shoes for about 2 yrs now and am ready for something with a covered heel or a strap.

I hope so for you too mama. When's the surgery again?
VW- I'm hoping the orthotics do the trick soon or I'm gonna be in rough shape for fest.....I'll need some good pain meds if they don't......

I actually saw the Keens Antigua in my favorite color, PURPLE at Marshalls for $25! I would have loved to get them, but like other folks said, when I tried them on, it felt very weird with the toe cover against my big toe and my longer-due-to-bunions "index" toe kinda stuck out and rubbed against the toe cover. Oh well... BUT, I did find some cute Mary Jane type sneakers with the built-in Dr. Scholl's gel heel which I need to test out and see if they can replace my clunky lace-up super-cushioned zydeco dancing sneakers. I'm sure they'll look much better with my dance skirts/dresses. Gals, your JF packing lists are on the way.

me too Bon! lparent8ATcogecoDOTca
Thanks so much!!
Just got back from the orthopedist and for sure it's Plantar Fasciitis. Got fitted for orthotics and sprung for the "fashion" girlie pair for another $200 (450 was covered by my health plan) . Now I can have them in casual and dressy shoes. Praying they work! I get them in 2 weeks.
"fashion" girlie pair? So you can put them in sandals and such? they show? if they show it's OK 'cuz they're cute? I'm sure you'll get some relief with orthodics I did! but I also started watching what kind of shoes I bought. I made a pact with my tooties that I wouldn't buy uncomfortable shoes anymore ... no matter how cute or sexy I thought they were that my feet would always come first!;) my tootsies are much happier now ... they even agreed to wear wedges for short periods of time.:)
that's fantastic that your health plan covered that much! I think ya'll have better plans up there than down here.

nah, I think the 'fashion' part is that they are slim-lined to fit in high heeled pumps and boots...I don't think they are colorful and pretty...although I wonder if I can decorate them with fabric paint lol!

Was looking at the Crocs site today. They have some cute new styles for the summer. I also found out that they have r**n boots. They would be so much lighter than the ones I usually bring to Fest. But I want to try them on rather than just ordering them. It looks like some of the sporting goods store carry them. Hopefully, I can find them around here. Otherwise, I'll have to truck to Richmond. I would upload a picture, but I am technically-deficient.

I went to the try em for 60 daze shoe store today to take back the danskos with the big wooden heels. Came out with 2 replacements -Naot sandals in brown and black. It wasn't my fault. The shoe salesman was so sweet to bring me all those shoes to try.
