aaarrrggghhh! mid-week? It's a haul from Sacramento on a school night. I saw the 'dudes at GAMH a few years ago, and right after I commented on how stiff the place was compared to the Fillmore (think Tipitina's vs. HOB), the guys came to the front of the house bar and hung out and chatted for a half-hour, or so, before the show - it really softened me up about the venue, and the sound was very good.
btw, Frangooch - did you catch their Hardly Strictly show last year? still the best performance I've ever seen from'em... at 11 a.m., to boot! Tommy ripped on that show.

I've missed Hardly Strictly the last couple of years, Duende. Great acts, but too many folks/parking hassles for this old dog.
I've always enjoyed GAMH, though. Not sure what stiffness you're referring to and I don't find it anything like the HOB. I think I went there first in about 1980--nice old SF history and a good room with excellent sound. Maybe their seating policy is a bit weird, but other than that, it's fine. Saw Sonny Landreth there last week and it was a great night.

you're right, and in and fairness, Great American doesn't have a corporate feel at all, and I think I'd like to eat dinner there before a show sometime (those balcony seats looked killer!). I guess it jsut felt more rules-oriented that night than on my earlier trips there, and I made the mistake of asking about taping - you'd have thought I suggested something truly heinous by the reaction. But with the Warfield gone, it's probably the closest thing left to the grand old opry-house setting for cool music gigs.
And I hear ya about the crowds/parking... my strategy at Hardly Strictly last year was to do what I never do at Jazzfest - park my behind in front of the stage that most appealed to me and dig the acts as they came to me for a change. Knock on wood, still no conflicts for this year, so I may get to my third HSB event!
