View Full Version : BRING EXTRA SOCKS

If you are like me and plan on being at Fest from before noon, 10 am somedays,or maybe every day, and staying to close to 7pm or later, by all means, bring extra socks. What a difference an extra pair of socks make half way thru my stay....and a little foot powder makes it even better.

Ohh yeah, nothing beats the feeling of putting those clean socks on midway through the day. Zydeco Bonnie gave me that tips years ago, and I always keep a pair in my fest pack.

I just wear black socks with my tevas- so the dirt doesnt show.
Another tip- always wear a 3rd sock, just in case

HMMM-- Sound advice I guess Terry... but what about us flip flop/sandal people? And then there are those other times... (which we will never ever ever mention)

...and if you keep those extra socks rolled up in a ziploc bag, it can be great on those r... days. Nothin' like a dry pair of extra socks. You can put your wallet or money or whatever back in the bag to keep them dry, too.

Corona, what gross feet! I burst out laughing, as I was taking a sip of Grand Marnier, and I thought it was going to come out nose. Talk about gross!
I think the key to deciding what footwear is appropriate depends on your mobility habits. In other words, if you like to camp, let's say at one stage, then sandals are OK. I am always on the go, and have concluded that Tevas don't offer a lot of comfort during a long day of FOMS-induced wandering.
Last year, a certain T-head couple hosted a lovely post-fest gathering at their house. We wanted to walk there, to see things along the way. But after running around the fairgrounds all day, and then walking up Gentilly, I developed a really bad blister and limped into their house. It ended up getting infected and I had to see a doctor.
So it's sneakers next year. And extra socks! Good advice, kids. Thanks

Okay, here's my cautionary tale...
Be VERY careful with your feet and your footwear!
The sad reality is that it doesn't look like I'm going to make it this year because I'm STILL dealing with painful plantar fasciitis (heel spurs) from last year's fest. It has started to dissipate a little bit, but it's now going on 9 months and my feet are far from good. Some days, it feels like someone has bashed the bottom of the heels of my feet with a hammer...it's awful.
I blame a lot of walking, frantic dancing (especially bouncing) and a pair of Merrel sandals. Very simply, those sandals (and others like them) just weren't built for festing.
I would suggest going for anything with a cupped heel; anything that can hold and support your heel in some way. In as much as everyone seemed to be wearing Crocs last year, I can attest that they are possibly the worst thing to wear if you are planning to do a lot of dancing...
For those who don't know, plantar fasciitis is basically microtears in the tendon that runs across the bottom of your foot and attaches to your heel. If your heel is doing a lot of side-to-side action and the front of your foot is anchored in a sandal, watch out. It can take up to 2 years to heal, and it will really put a cramp in your life.
Be careful...and safe festing!

ROSS, you can still come to fest and just not move around as much! Don't let the feets stop you from coming at all!

Gotta say (don't throw anything 'cept if it's shooters) that I hate having dirty feet! Gonna do loafers this year.
Ross, I had the dreaded things you speak of.... they WILL right themselves 'cos I didn't have surgery and mine are done now (took about 12 months). Come to fest and we'll teach you how to shake your ass without moving your feet! Won't be easy but we'll do it fo ya!

and when its r*iny & muddy, if your tennies are laced tight, the foot part of your sock will be wet, but clean. you can use this to remove the mud from your leg above your sock. then you just throw those socks away. unless you were Miss Doris, then you boil them in bleach water when you get home that night and they come clean.

Ahh Ross, that's a bummer. You really might want to look at getting a cast on. It's the only thing that finally made the difference for me. I only wore it for about 6 weeks, and it kept my foot at the correct angle to let everything heal up. I hate that you might miss the fest!

Chippie, got it this morning, sorry hunni.
Ross I was hoping you had changed your mind about the trip but I hear ya. If you're in that much pain, you must be terrified to start all over again or even injure it more. So sorry you have to miss fest though. It would be tough on you not to bounce around thus getting hurt again....you're like Tigger does the Fest :D :D
You will be missed!!!

Thanks for the sentiments and the encouragement gang!
I'm still really on the fence about going, but we'll see...
One part of me KNOWS what the past year has been like, and I honestly don't want to spend another year recovering from a re-aggravated injury. I haven't been able to do a lot of the physical things I love to do - running, tennis, biking, longs walks with the dog, etc. - and the lack of physical activity has resulted in around 7 more pounds of Ross to love. I've missed the odd Fest once or twice before and it didn't KILL me, but...
The moment that lineup came out, the Fest Fever™ started all over again. Sigh.
As for the suggestion that I can "dance without moving my feet", who ya'll kidding? :>) I'm not sure how many miles we put on our feet on a good fest day and night (any guesses?), but dancing is only half the battle! (Hmmmm. Perhaps I can acquire one of those Cleopatra platform deals and hire some folks to carry me around while I comfortably recline and nibble on crawfish!) My feet don;t seem to hurt as much when I'm wearing hockey skates, so I suppose that is also an option...
But watch your toes if I'm wearing skates and you're wearing sandals!
In all seriousness, I keep looking to see if a condo pops up, and if it does, then I'll make a final decision. My voice of reason tells me that it isn't a very good idea to risk destroying my feet completely, but fortunately, my voice of reason rarely accompanies me to Jazzfest!

Ross, I understand where you're coming from and that does suck but I just can't see you missing fest. Too bad they wont let a renegade golf cart in the fest for ya, lol. What do handicapped people do?
Also, don't worry about the seven; I have 20 more of me to love, lol!

Hehehe! Your golf cart idea reminded me of a plan I cooked up last year...
I figured that the people working the gates at the fest wouldn't think twice about someone bringing in a golf cart on a flatbed before the gates open in the morning. I would have the golf cart rental company drop it by the backstage area near Acura, and then I would use the cart to wheel me and my posse back and forth between Acura and the SoCo stage on the track throughout the day. If you recall, I had made these nifty "backstage pass" laminates to hand out to my fellow threadheads, and I figured that as long as we were wearing SOME kind of laminate around our necks no one would hassle us!
(The whole plan was actually cooked up in response to my intense FOMS between Springsteen and The Meters.)
Anyway, I went so far as to locate a golf cart rental company in Metairie, and they told me that they would have no problem delivering my cart to the fest. Alas, I couldn't convince any other Threadheads to participate in my little gambit, so the plan was scuttled...
Anyone up for a golf cart ressurection scheme???? :>)

For those r**n and mud days (we know how it can get muddy) stylish shrimp boots (a/k/a r**nboots) are a must - i had some great ones last year, pink w/ flowers and rinestons....this year i found some red stripped cowboy boots that are rubber for mud....

i have real shrimb boots, and then i several pairs of those new stylish rubber bootm my favorites have lip prints all over. last year they combined with the sweat to rub off my tan in a tube - but only in spots, and a nice straight line around my upper calf. i had to spend monday 'tween laying out by the pool to even it up with real tan. yup, that was hard. there may have been beverages involved.

roflmao Barb...you friggin crack me up! The one thing about the r*in boots is that your feet SMELL so bad when you take them off. I wore them for MG last year and I had to take them off outside the bedroom cuz I didn't want to choke CBH lol! They were brand new and my feet were clean (for a change) when I put them on ;) Is there anything that can be done for that?
