How about that group of perennial, unofficial performers who, for good, bad or ugly, have become part of the rich fabric of jazzfest experience.
For starters:
Beatle Bob
Shamat
Wing
Who ya got?

Was it Wing or Mossman that I remember hearing was no longer with us?
Another character is Dusk with the brightly colored bushy mustache. And then there's Jake the Tutu man, aka one of the Watermelon Sacrifice guys. And then there's all of us wackos!

That would be Mossman. Thankfully (at least last I heard), Wing is doing much better.

I think Tye Dye Guy really sticks out. He hasn't been on the boards in a long time. Ran into him all over the place last year.
Remember Amyp and Jeff? He was right near us with those sticks he was playing with like crazy.
I know many of you know him....he tripped me out last year. Lots of fun.

Is it Sona? I know her from Joe & Marisol of the PDKK, and I think that is her name.

If she could dance, i might not have minded her being onstage with some of my fave bands last year. Shamat can dance. Tambourine Lady used to be unofficial but now she's officially on the schedule.

MDfest posted it while I was typing. It's Anat.
I'm laughing because I just remembered last year that her picture was in the Times Pic and Joe was jealous because she's in the paper more than he is. I'm not sure, but he may have said "what's she got that I don't?"
Joe should be on this list too--he's quite a celebrity. At the Magnolia Fest last year the Wild Maggies called him up on stage with all the other Pet de Kats and Joe took the mic with a great war chant. And remember Joe and the balloons at the first day of fest last year?

That's right - Anat. Somehow I missed that connection from MD Fest's A Gnat.
Sona is someone different. Yeah, to lots of folks Big Chief Joe Pony dancer is an unofficial celebrity. And he loves every minute of it. What a media hound! :D
I wasn't at fest last year, but the year before we did a big PDKK balloon release at Congo Stage during Terrence Simien, because he played his new Pet De Kat song. Very cool!

Sonna died a year or two ago, way too young. She was a beautiful woman with a beautiful spirit. She had a wild lion's mane of dirty blond hair and a gorgeous body always wrapped in tight, torn, fringed, animal print or colorful apparel. She had this big hula hoop with long ribbons mounted on a pole that she could carry through the festival all day long, never stopping except to wave it over some happy dancing folks. She also had a big rubber band-type thing that a bunch of people would put around their waists and get in a circle and bounce around together. She always made people smile. I miss her all over again as I remember.

I was so sad when Sonna died and then Wing got sick the next year. They just embodied the fest spirit for me and were often seen together, but also apart. I was so happy to see Wing last year I hugged him, I'm sure he thought I was a nut!!

interesting in how many festgoers find some of the "characters" fun while others are annoying, and of course it is often the other way around with any given festgoer. me-i like wing, fun and charming (and very nice to my young children). Beatle bob is noxious to me, and i shudder when his presence is regrettably noted. i'm not sure why, and may be prejudiced by comments i have read over the years. Eddie is innocuous to me, which is good-nice to see him and now lets get back to the music.
i was sad to read of that young woman's passing a couple of years ago (sonna?). i found her a bit annoying the first few years, then came to appreciate her energy and politeness in not swirling that hair and hula hoop in others' faces. i cant say that for some of the others.
me, just another old guy with a shirt from 1990.

Good thing you didn't come looking for us at the Northside. We were at a reception at the Highland Inn; the dinking started early Saturday. We only got as far as Manuel's afterwards (half a block walk).
Will let you know next time, but don't get to Atlanta often. Only my second trip, first visit was 5 years ago.

The Highland Inn is a cool place to stay. And Manuel's is a classic. It's been around forever and is a favorite of the local politicos. Jimmy Carter used to hang there a lot back in the day.

No one has mentioned the tamborine lady in the gospel tent yet . . .Yeah, I think someone mentioned tambourine lady early on as someone who used to be an unofficial performer but seems to have now become an official performer in the gospel tent. I love second-line Eddie! There's another woman with long gray hair who always second-lines in Economy Hall, often right behind Eddie, and she does some of the most sexy, salacious moves that blow people's minds because they seem to be totally at odds with her "little old lady" appearance.;)

The original plan was to spell Pet de Kat Loves NOLA. Then one letter went POP! Then the 'E' escaped to the heavens. It was like playing scrabble trying to reconfigure the slogan with the letters that remained.

I totally agree with you heyhon. I met Ed Bradley at Jazz Fest, and he was probably one of the nicest people I've ever met there. He said one thing to me I'll never forget. It was at a Robert Cray night show in 1987 and I told him "I came here to hear Robert play the guitar, I also play the guitar". He said "You just don't play the guitar my friend, you are also a musician, remember that".
That's the kind of guy he was.
