I wish I didn't have a conflict in my schedule. That is quite the evite that people are sending out. My friends who I go to jazzfest with every year ar going, but I get to listen to boring speeches. Anyone want to trade?
Have fun. If you scream loud enough, maybe I'll hear you in Santa Monica.

Well, with little boys in the house (not including me), I am now awake. After four hours of sleep.
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:00 AM
Here's the beginning of my review:
Shamarr, John and Paul came out and did a version of the Andrew Sisters "Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree." Second song, Shamarr picked up an electric guitar, and let the band in the Creedance song "Green River."
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:01 AM
Polka was the theme of song number 3. I didn't recognize the song, but Kurt (lostcajun) tells me it was a Polish traditional.
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:03 AM
Paul then took lead vocals in a version of "The Music Man," and was quickly followed by Shamarr's instrumental of "76 Trombones."
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:04 AM
At that point, the crowd began to boo.
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:05 AM
Seeking to quiet the crowd, John soloed a version of "Tiptoe Through the Tulips."
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:06 AM
It didn't work.
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:08 AM
Muskrat Love and A Horse with No Name were the next songs, played with full band and the boys in sweet harmony.
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:10 AM
At this point, Harry Shearer came out and took the lead on bass to the song "Play That Funky Music White Boy."
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:10 AM
The crowd roared.
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:14 AM
Sensing they now had the crowd in hand, John took lead vocals on "Like a Virgin," and "Don't Cry for me Argentina"
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:19 AM
Announcing they were nearing the end of the first set, Paul (with shirt unbuttoned to his waist) took lead vocals on "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy." The crowd sashayed in a second line.
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:24 AM
Continuing in that vain, and paying tribute to the late George Carlin, Paul took over keyboards and led a gospel-tinged version of "The Seven Words You Can't Say on Television."

What can I tell you? It was a GREAT, GREAT show. Nate/Nanci and Carmen and I went to Colman's house for lunch yesterday, and were entertained by John and Paul....Shamarr was tired from his flight and soon went down for a nap.
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:29 AM
the show last night was amazing. I'm guessing about 150 people....I'm being interrupted by my boys....back in a minute.
chrisjoseph
06-28-2008, 10:36 AM
Two sets, each about an hour. Did a ton of songs from the two new albums, along with some old John stuff and old Paul/Cowboy Mouth stuff....my wife is telling me to get off the computer....

I have photos, Colman has some video....but I'm driving up to Mammoth Lakes today. Many TH's attended...Harry Shearer sat in on a couple of songs in the first set. Before the second set, Nate and Nanci presented Shamarr with his $15K check....the crowd loved it, as did Shamarr.

We're back from the Threadhead West Experience. Being LA-virgins everyone was gentle with us. It was really a perfect trip. Thanks to all.
One of the songs Chris forgot to mention!??!!! Just before the end of the first set, in a surge of emotion (which Chris has been known to do on rare special occasions); Chris rushed the stage, pushed Boutte away from the mic and started leading everyone in a mass LA sing along of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I never cried so much during a sing along.... it was ..... beautiful .... in a psychedelic kinda way.
Peace

Friday at the Joint was just a blast. The place was filled with people that were really just cheering every song that was played. You could really tell that Shamarr,John Boutte, Paul & Harry Shear just loved playing that night. (Harry Shear started his radio show out today with "Good Neighbor") Threadhead Records got the biggest cheer of all. Nanci and Nate gave Shamarr his 15k check for his new CD. He said he's really gonna make a good one.
The Threadheads that were there Festivalgirl & Guy, 2forthefest, Ozzie (No one could believe she came all that way and partied that hard) Sophisticated Sissy, Mr & Ms. Lostcajun, Chris and wife, & Mexi. You people are just allot of fun.
Yea! Saturday, the Oceanfront margaritas, food, with friends-well look at the pictures.
Oh yea, No one mentioned the encore song the boys did of "My Boy Lollipop" I was crying so hard after that one. I had to do it.
Chris forgot to mention how the band funked up "Windmills of Your Mind" -- it was a real show stopper. We thought it couldn't get much better than that, until John brought the house down with a very heartfelt version of "I honestly love you."
sophisticated sissy
06-30-2008, 02:36 AM
Yes, it was fantastic! But I can't believe everyone forgot the encore? Remember?
Shamarr, Paul and John came back out and started out singing a capella, with a full 3 part harmony, an old song we all know and love. Before the second verse, the entire crowd had joined in and they brought the house down with "99 Bottles Of Beer On The Wall!"

J&M STUDIO
Thank you for the wonderful article on J&M Studio in your Jazz Fest issue. It is about time that more people recognize Cosimo Matassa's contributions to the music industry. We have long felt that he is overlooked, which is one reason we started producing J&M T-shirts (with Cosimo's permission, of course). We have been selling these shirts since November and have been donating all the profits to the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic. If any of your readers are interested in buying a shirt, they can order them on-line at BackwardGlances.com and click on the J&M logo. Starting this month, some of the shirt styles will also be available at Louisiana Music Factory. It's a great way to help promote awareness of J&M's importance to rock 'n' roll, and help New Orleans musicians at the same time.

So glad to hear your appreciation of Neil. I swear I was not a fan before I saw him back in the late 70's but when I saw a master play the audience I was hooked. Over the years we have invested in his disks.
He is coming to DC but we will be checking our oldest into college. Playing football and they report early. So the Garden shows look like where I would want to be but Pittsburgh is closer during a busy month.
What I do know, that it would be fun being at his show with you. Have a great time at your shows and I will try to get mine.
Who else has seen Diamond live? What did you think?
I'm working on getting my pics from this weekend uploaded ....Most of them came out too dark :(

And Nathan is such a good sport that he only grimaced a little bit when I chose a pink one.;) Disneyland was so much fun! Thank you, Nathan, Nanci, & Mexi for a great evening!
I'll never forget the wigs Ozzie and I bought on Friday afternoon. They are such a trip! Ozzie, have you worn yours yet? Ozzie is such a kind and generous soul, and I still can't get over her making that trek to L.A. for the weekend. She is really a trouper!
Seeing Festivalgirl, SteveFest, Robbie & Mrs. Neverleft, Mr. & MrsLostcajun, the 2Fors, Ozzie, Chrisjoseph, Mexi, and the band members in a setting other than New Orleans was a bit discombobulating. It was sort of like the Dr. John tune! We all enjoyed the performance by Shamarr, Paul & John enormously, but being spoiled by the scene in New Orleans, we were all ready for the next band to come out!
Even though I love Atlanta & Tejas, there is no beach in either of those places. If Chris does something like this again, I'd vote for having it in L.A. again.
Muchos gracias to all for an epic weekend. You guys are the best. Can't wait until we do it again! OXOXOXOXOXOXOXO

BWAHAHA Sissy! I think the chick selling the wigs was using trick mirrors or somesuch. My wig looks awful!!! I'll bring it to Fest though... might just need to drink a lot before donning it. :D
