View Full Version : New Orleans Top 50 Bars

BigDag
06-24-2008, 01:00 PM
This week’s Gambit ranks the 50 best bars in New Orleans. They have several criteria: if it’s a music club, it needs a bar you can enter with no cover charge and the place must stand on its own as a drinking establishment. Also: no wine bars. College hang outs and late night joints are examined in different articles within this week’s issue.

That said, the top 10...

1. Mimi's in the Marigny
2. Napoleon House
3. One Eyed Jacks
4.The Delachaise
5. Cooter Brown's Tavern
6. d.b.a.
7. Maple Leaf Bar
8. Rivershack Tavern
9. Mother-in-Law Lounge
10. French 75

You can see the whole list here:

So how exactly do I get into these places for free, when they're charging for the band?

4.The Delachaise

The Delachaise is a great little bar that has wonderful tapas-like food. Chef Chris, formerly of Christian's and hubby of author Poppy Z. Brite is the chef. They have tons of different vodkas.

Hey, some people just don't LIKE going to meetings ;) and speaking of tots, I never did try the 3:30 a.m. tater tots with the works at 13 on Frenchmen. They were pretty good with breakfast, however!

Nice to see Bullets on the list. Great description too.

I think I may have solved the mystery about what happened to the Kirk Joseph show that was listed for the Balcony Club on Esplanade and Decatur on the Tuesday 'tween this year. It appears that there is a Balcony Club on Harmony Street, which is nowhere near the Marigny. Perhaps that's where Kirk was playing on that night; he certainly wasn't at the club on Esplanade.

The Alibi is popular with service industry folks and is open pretty much 24/7, hence the great beer selection. ;) :D

Yay for the Northsore...
If you ever needed a reason to come over?????????????

They couldn't have picked 2 more different bars.

Etoile is part owned by Michalopoulos and it is like steping into one of his paintings. The walls are all crazy colored and his paintings hang all over. The door frames are askewed and funky. The bar beautiful and mosiac. Good food too and a great wine store connected

and Ruby's!! I love this place.. it is what is says it is.. a roadhouse

One of these days I'm gonna charter a bus so all you visiting New Orleans can come on over and party. The Magic Bus???

Wow, lots of notables MIA such as:

Coop's Place, The Abbey, Chart Room, R Bar, Parkway Tavern, Liuzza's (either one), Vic's Kangaroo, Ugly Dog, Ryan's, Checkpoint Charlie, Igor's (although not a fave), Madigan's, Milan Lounge, Ernst Cafe', Rusty Nail & Bank Street Bar

Cooter's is waaaay overrated at no.5 and I agree w/Swag that Maple Leaf really isn't so much a bar as it is a music venue. dba on the other hand doesn't charge a cover if you are already inside when the show begins.

The Old Point, Circle Bar, Parasol's, Kingpin, Mayfair and Molly's deserve a higher spot on the list.

I don't remember if it was Tuesday or not, but one of the nights between we walked by the Balcony and it was some sort of burlesque show

You tell me when and where! If it's Ruby's (which by the way, I have never been kicked out of), then I can crash at Bill's if I can't find my way home. But be forewarned! I haven't been out in so long that I might be sitting down and drinking when I should be dancing, and then falling down dancing when I should be sitting down and drinking.

I do like a lot of what BDO does but his repertoire is so vast that no one could possibly love everything.

Actually, I haven't been kicked out of any northshore bars as far as I can recall, so we're good to go anywhere you and tangly want. As my friend Donald always says: "I'll buy!" But then he never does. But you know that I will. Or will I? Oh, I will! Or, maybe not. OK, I will, you had me at "kicked out".

Thanks girls! I certainly did enjoy the evening. Not so much the tongue lashing for making fun of ya'll's "life of riley" lifestyle, but everything else for sure.

I also felt OK at work...all day today. A little tired, but OK anyway. All day. At work. Just kidding! Please don't lash out at me with your tongues again.

I wasn't really looking forward to the musical stylings of JB Elston, but as so very often happens when I'm not looking forward to something, I was extremely pleased. Especially with the selection and execution. It seems to me that his "jam" group selections are quite a bit different than his normal trio repertoire. Some people think it's cheesy, but I enjoy hearing a band accurately covering old pop numbers.

Ya'll were also lucky that I was there to protect you from those wolves. When they saw me, they went running with their tails between their legs!

The cabernet at Ruby's is excellent! Swilly, yet with a sewer-like bouquet.

Good thing Tangly wasn't there when it's really smoky. I told my chauffer son that you can smell the smoke from the street, even when you're just driving by, and it's true! But, it's still Ruby's and I've have many a good time there.

Well, well, Jolie has changed her avatar thingy to a N.O. manhole cover. How cool is that?

Speaking of sewers, covers and the like, I scored a miserable 85 on the N.O. quiz at the below link. It's about a year old, but still fun if you haven't done it yet.

http://www.nola.com/photos/t-p/DatQuiz/DatQuiz.swf

Now I have to get back to preparing a barbeque meal for my 19 yr old son and his eight plus pals who are all soccer freaks and are coming to watch the Euro Cup finals tomorrow. How exciting!

And don't say I should let them just fend for themselves. I cannot afford a new house.

Yep.. I'm a true believer in never staying the same too long...
And my avatar was way overdue for a change, but I was trying to do one with animation and it just wasn't working.. so in the mean time manhole cover.. I know.. I know.. about as creative as my bored name:rolleyes:

It's not a manhole cover, it's the ubiquitous water meter cover....just setting the record straight ;)
