Just heard the news. Along with Richard Pryor, Carlin was the best comedian of my generation. I hope some of you got the chance to see him live. I did.
I'd say RIP but I'm not sure if he will.

Couldn't agree more. I remember hearing him when I was a kid in the 60's....before Carlin ventured into the "controversial" material. Wonderful comedian, and he will be missed.

Classic Carlin
I saw him a few times but the most memorable was Carnegie Hall in nyc in the early 70's.(the only performance i have seen there btw)
He came out late and people were throwing paper airplanes on the stage waiting for him.
when he came out he started throwing them back into the audience.
RIP George, you will be missed

Hopefully this will be included in George's eulogy. Once it entered my ear it has never left my brain and I doubt it ever will.
"Ratshit, batshit, dirty old twat. Sixty-nine assholes tied in a knot. Hooray, lizardshit, FUCK!"
I thought about censoring the language with #s and *s and then realized that George would have been completely against such a thing.
Rock on, G.C.

We use it when kids/us/cats/dogs/whatever screws something up. Most recently when my Boo Radley kitty fell off the counter and took coffee cup, mouse, keyboard, a hammer and a box of 500 business cards with him as he landed in the garbage can. He was sound asleep and I don't think he woke up until he hit the floor.

I'm crushed. I loved that guy.... used his comedy routines as "words of wisdom"
"Please St. Anthony, help me find my keys..."
"tennis is ping pong played standing on the table"
Difference between "shit" & stuff"? "Hey move your shit, I gotta put my stuff there"...
goes on & on...
sadly, never saw him..

Guess he's hanging with Biff Barf talking sports. My brother & I played FM & AM until the record practically fell apart.
I guess he's found out if religion is or isn't bullshit.

Wonder if he got his 2 minute warning!! RIP
1. Shit - The bird shit on the statue.
2. Piss - I have to piss like a race horse.
3. Fuck - Fuck you.
4. Cunt - She has a rancid cunt.
5. Cocksucker - Go to hell, you cocksucker.
6. Motherfucker - You are a motherfucker.
7. Tits - Hey, nice tits.
Later, Carlin referred to three additional "auxiliary" words:
1. Fart - I farted.
2. Turd - Who dropped a turd in the urinal?
3. Twat - Shave that hairy twat.

PROUST QUESTIONNAIRE
George Carlin
With three Grammys, a record 12th HBO special in the works, and the respect of his peers (his Comedy Hall of Fame inductee ceremony included Bob Hope, Richard Pryor, and Sid Caesar), George Carlin has been richly rewarded for an act that fuses incisive social commentary with somewhat risqué language.
With the publication of his second book, Napalm and Silly Putty, Carlin shows that the seven words you still can’t say on television are “George Carlin is not a comic genius.”
May 2001
What is your greatest fear?
To lose the power of speech.
Which historical figure do you most identify with?

Pretty bummed about the news today, BUT if anyone had left a mark he most certainly did! I had about 6 or 7 of his HBO shows on my DVR. When I found out he put his whole collection out "all my stuff (http://www.amazon.com/George-Carlin-All-My-Stuff/dp/B000RPCJBG)" on DVD I deleted them all but I still havent bought it yet! Just put it in my shopping cart today! :D
Ive used his dialogue a lot on this bored, for instance, last week I was trying to find his skit about golf to post on the golf thread when people were talking about the Tiger Woods comeback...Sorry a little too late.:(
This is the youtube clip I posted on the Live Earth (http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/showthread.php?t=2805&highlight=george+rules) thread when everyone was arguing about the energy crisis. Classic!

Dying Is Hard. Comedy Is Harder.
By JERRY SEINFELD
THE honest truth is, for a comedian, even death is just a premise to make jokes about. I know this because I was on the phone with George Carlin nine days ago and we were making some death jokes. We were talking about Tim Russert and Bo Diddley and George said: “I feel safe for a while. There will probably be a break before they come after the next one. I always like to fly on an airline right after they’ve had a crash. It improves your odds.”
I called him to compliment him on his most recent special on HBO. Seventy years old and he cranks out another hour of great new stuff. He was in a hotel room in Las Vegas getting ready for his show. He was a monster.
You could certainly say that George downright invented modern American stand-up comedy in many ways. Every comedian does a little George. I couldn’t even count the number of times I’ve been standing around with some comedians and someone talks about some idea for a joke and another comedian would say, “Carlin does it.” I’ve heard it my whole career: “Carlin does it,” “Carlin already did it,” “Carlin did it eight years ago.”
And he didn’t just “do” it. He worked over an idea like a diamond cutter with facets and angles and refractions of light. He made you sorry you ever thought you wanted to be a comedian. He was like a train hobo with a chicken bone. When he was done there was nothing left for anybody.
But his brilliance fathered dozens of great comedians. I personally never cared about “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television,” or “FM & AM.” To me, everything he did just had this gleaming wonderful precision and originality.
I became obsessed with him in the ’60s. As a kid it seemed like the whole world was funny because of George Carlin. His performing voice, even laced with profanity, always sounded as if he were trying to amuse a child. It was like the naughtiest, most fun grown-up you ever met was reading you a bedtime story.
I know George didn’t believe in heaven or hell. Like death, they were just more comedy premises. And it just makes me even sadder to think that when I reach my own end, whatever tumbling cataclysmic vortex of existence I’m spinning through, in that moment I will still have to think, “Carlin already did it.”
Jerry Seinfeld is a writer and a comedian.

I felt the same way about seeing her last night! I always liked that song, but I never really paid attention to the melancholy lyrics - it's absolutely beautiful.
In so many ways, I'm extremely fortunate. I was always one of the "in" kids in high school, and I thought (and still do) that they were some of the best days and years of my life. A few years after graduation, I ran into an old classmate and I was talking about how much fun we had back in the day, and he just looked at me and said "that's because you were on the inside." His experience was VERY different than mine (he was a bit of an art geek type), and I've felt badly about it ever since.
This all kind of ties into George Carlin. I caught a tribute to him last night on Larry King, and he was talking about how humans are basically really good people...until you get them into groups. Even groups of 2 or 3 - that's when the backbiting and alienation starts. His comment was something along the lines of "Hitler was probably a really fun guy at parties! It's when they stuck him in front of a whole bunch of people that all the trouble started..."
We'll miss you George!

This is from Kelly Carlin, George's daughter. She sent it to my friend
Cat who forwarded it to me. Finally, a chain letter I can believe in!
Adam
In honor of The Mark Twain Prize honoring my father tonight,
Wednesday Feb. 4 at 9PM on PBS, AND more importantly to point out
the fact that the 7 Words You Can't Say on Television are still
deemed indecent almost 40 years later and will be bleeped in said
special tonight - I am sending you the 7 WORDS that you will be
missing tonight, and ask that you pass them on to 7 PEOPLE today.
This chain letter will not bring untold riches or dreams coming true.
It might make some people laugh, and it might make others cry.
It could possibly get you in trouble (depending on who you send it
to).
But most probably, it will just remind people of my dad, who was
funny and a great teacher, and a way cool father.
Oh, yeah, and the hypocrisy of language that still exists.
So here they are:
Shit
Piss
Fuck
Cunt
Cocksucker
Motherfucker
Tits.
Enjoy. Keep the Chain alive. Have a great day.
And watch the show. It is wonderful.
love,
Kelly Carlin-McCall
