Gota love Ozzie ; Guillen was on a roll before the game and got in another shot at one of his favorite targets, Wrigley Field. Especially the batting cage under the right field bleachers.
“You go to take batting practice and the rats are bigger than pigs out there. You want to take a look? I think the rats are lifting weights,” he said.

It's taken a few years but they have the park looking great, those were some dark years Dd.

Slightly off topic here, but I've always wondered about how fan loyalty is determined when a city has two MLB teams. Someone told me that in NYC, it typically runs geographically (I forget the "boundaries" that split Mets and Yankee loyalty). Then another person told me it's more of a socio-economic determinant. (Again, I forget the details.) And there's always the "my diddy and his diddy rooted for [insert team]".
My guess is that a lot of people root for whichever team is winning more than year, because it's easier on the blood pressure. Personally, there is enough sports adrenaline running up here in the Boston area, so I'm glad we don't have another MLB team.
So JGT and Krewe, in Chicago, how do YOU guys declare your loyalty?

South and Southwest from Chicago in mostly Sox turf, everywhere else is big time Cubbie turf. The Cubbies also have the whole state of Iowa rooting for them.

Good question and a tough one for me, jay. In fact I just had a discussion with jada (cardinals fan) while in NOLA on this subject. It is SOMEWHAT geographic... but that's not the whole story. For some it's family ties, for some its who was winning during their formative years. My observation is it seems to lock in at an early age. There was one a theory that cubs are more white collar, and sox blue collar, but I think that stereotype no longer fits (if it ever did). You definitely see more hispanics at "the cell," and I love seeing a more diverse crowd.
Personally, I do not have a preference between the 2 CHicago teams, which makes most people (yea, you, jada) think there must be something wrong with me, or I'm lying. But I grew up not much of a baseball fan - went to a few Sox games as a kid-- cuz we lived closer and they were offering lots of great deals back then. Then as an adult I moved to the north side right in the shadow of Wrigley and caught Cubs fever and a love of basball in general.
Every summer for the past 20, I've gone to one of the 2 opening days, and 4 or 5 games on each side of town. During the crosstown series, I feel pretty scizo. This year, its just fun to watch these two great teams play some good baseball with lots of excitement around town.
This year, at least, its good to be a CHICAGO fan.

We full-brainers like the White Sox... Even when they give up 9 runs in an inning.

I hear ya...And we still love our Red Sox even when they give up 4 runs in the first inning, and 4 more in the second, as they did yesterday to the Cards.
Interesting comments about the team loyalty. Glinda, I'm glad you're able to attend so many games, including opening days. Fenway Park is the smallest and most expensive ballpark in the country, so unless you know someone with season's tickets (and fortunately, I do), you're either going to pay a scalper or you ain't gettin' in.
OK, since I personally know Johnny G., I will declare my allegiance to the Cubs. And order a cabbage soup on the side.

Jonny,
You are giving some of the idiots I've experienced in the bleachers too much credit!
I haven't been online for a couple of days. Tough week at work and yeah, I'm stuck in Jersey. I enjoyed reading your posts, brought a smile to my face and maybe I'll stop moping around the house.
My parent's are a "mixed baseball marriage"; mom's a Sox fan and dad's a Cub fan. They both grew up on the near NW side, around Division and Noble. I was born in 59 and I suppose my mother spent alot of time around the radio listening to the Go Go White Sox at the time. I became a Cub fan after a youth group took me to a game in 1969. Cubs beat the Mets in 11 innings.
If any Threads want to go to Wrigley the night of July 9th against the Reds, let me know. I have an extra.

There was an article in the paper a few years ago comparing Sox Fans to Cubs Fans in several demographic catagories. Age, gender, race, class, white collar/ blue collar, ect. Surprising, they were almost identical in every catagory.
I believe it is mostly geographically divided. If you travel around the North side and Northern Suburbs you will see mostly Cubs flags flying and on the Southside and South Suburbs Sox flags.
Of coarse there are exceptions to the rule. I have lived on the northside my entire life and I ama devoted Sox fan.

Back in the 70's and I was still quite young, we would get dropped off at Wrigley and sit in the bleachers...along with the few thousand other fans in the ballpark. Back then Wrigley was an old dump in a fairly crummy neighborhood. Gentrification took hold around the ballpark in the late 70's and 80's and the neighborhood got better. The Cubs had the benefit of being broadcast on WGN across the country. So as the old parks got torn down, Wrigley became more of a novelty. Now a days the place is loaded with tourists, party-minded 20-somethings and even a few true fans. The Cubs are more popular then the White Sox these days. That is fine by me. I actually sort of feel sorry for the true Cub fans because they have to deal with the fact that the Cubbies just cant seal the deal. You know the excuses... Bartman, a Goat etc. etc. The geography thing is true but only to some extent. My late grandmother spent her first 40 years living in McKinley Park which is only about 2 miles from Comiskey/U.S. Cellular Field....And she was a lifelong Cub fan. My firehouse is INFESTED with Cub fans. My take on it is that Cub fans are too accepting. They should DEMAND nothing less then a World Championship. Making the playoffs dosent mean squat. I would be thrilled to see them in the World Series.... When they lose in game 7 to the White Sox :D

I'm like Glinda in that I grew up with both. Rooted for the Sox in '83 with Baines and Luzinski and the Cubs in '84 with Sandburg and Sutcliffe. But ultimately, you put them both in the WS, I'd pull for the Cubs because my grandfather grew up near the park and rooted for him his whole life. But, a loss to the Sox would still be reason to celebrate. And so would the fact no NY team was there.

Prior to last weeks series. The Sox and Cubs were dead even, wins and losses, in games played against each other(since inter-league play started) and runs scored. Sox need a sweep tonight to keep things even.
Go Sox!

Wouldn't that be incredible! Yea, unbelievable, I guess.
I've really enjoyed watching these two weekend series. I like both teams so it was a win/win for me. We could live with both teams facing off in October.
