No cost involved. Only a donation if you wish to donate. They are a non-denominational group of prayer practitioners, I think loosely affiliated with the Church of Religious Science, which has nothing to do with Christian Scientists or Scientology, but is based on positive thinking and metaphysics -- how our thoughts are very powerful, which is why prayer is very powerful ... you should definitely give them a call. They will do a "healing" prayer for your dad with you over the phone. Here's their website: www.wmop.org (800/421-9600).
Thanks Leni...I think it's time....it's been a rough couple of days but he's out of ICU and no longer critical. Lots of karma still needed. Ed and I are likely going to take the trip to Satchmo in order to have a break before my head pops off from the stress. Never needed patio time at the Jamns' like I do right now.

Well Lis, this seems like good news, right???
No ICU, no longer critical...these are not baby steps anymore, these are big steps!
We have to take our blessings as we get them. We are still thinking of you and your dad, and sending our love your way....

It certainly can't hurt to give them a call, as they will release powerful healing energy into the Universe directed at your Dad. Glad to hear that he is out of ICU and no longer critical, even though it's 2 steps forward, 1 step backward. Sounds like Satchmo is just "what the doctor ordered" at least for you! But sorry we won't see you at Vaughan's Thurs night :-(

Thanks you guys!!Yes, he's made huge gains and has had some heartwrenching setbacks this week. I'm so proud of him but his mental health is suffering and we're worried. He's a fighter and is working so damn hard at getting better. He failed the swallowing test which was done after he ripped out his feeding tube :( So the tube is back in and he's not too happy about it...very defeated and so sad for us too. My hope is that when I get back from Satchmo, he'll be eating on his own and hopefully talking with his trach. Thanks for the karma....and Leni, I will call that number today.....he needs all the healing energy he can get.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

Jenn.....let's do it!!

Rosie...shooting you an email now....hope to see you when you guys get back from your show on the weekend. Tuesday night....

Oh thank you thank you!!! Dad had an AMAZING DAY! He's finally breathing through his nose, first time in 3 months (since radiation) and from his mouth. The trach was plugged all day and we bawled our eyes out when we heard his voice and he said he could breathe. He cried too..it was awesome. He took a few steps too with assistance! All that's left is being able to eat and more physio for walking and he should be home. The docs say another 2 weeks maybe. I can't THANK YOU ALL enough for all the karma...I know it helped...we almost lost him a few times these last few weeks but he's out of the woods now and I feel so good about going to Nola :)
I'll take you up on those infamous pudding shots Nola! Can't wait to see you all!! Jenn....I'm coming HOME!!!! xoxoxoxo

In case you didn't see this (Threadhead Karma thread) on the General Music Discussion Board, Delta is showing her art, and if you're in town tonite, she's invited you to a reception. Go & support threadhead art!
The reception is Wed night from 5-7 at the Crescent City Brewhouse. If anyone is interested in attending the reception, let me know since I have to put you on the guest list. Never had an artist reception with a guest list, but oh well. It would be nice if SOMEONE showed up though since none of my family can make it. Food and booze and the chance to see some great art.

What a great weekend! We only went to the fest on Saturday (for Shamarr's set) because of the heat, but there were lots of THs in town and tons of fun was had. 13 THs got all dressed up and went to the Pelican Club for dinner on Sunday night. (See Swag's pix).
Corona won't be back home till Wed. She & Ed are off enjoying the redneck riviera for a couple of days and will be back tonight when we have a dinner date with the Rosetrees.
Sha!! I didn't even know you were coming, great to see you!! AND our long lost TH, HatsJazz has bought a condo across from Port of Call and is going to be a six & sixer between Noo Yawk & NOLA!!

No kidding! Great to see everyone having such a great time -- always good to have some folks show up as a surprise! It looked Africa HOT alright.

Here's my weekend update: It was Alberta CHILLY at the Canmore Folk Fest, never seen Boutte, Sanchez and Duke wearing so many layers...they had a great time, charmed the fleece warmup pants off the crowd and really loved the vibe of the little mountain town and its little mountain festival. I have to say that CJ Chenier did not look prepared clotheswise, but delivered the heat every time, including a great workshop with the Duhks, who brought their Winnipeg French-Canajun roots to the proceedings, even played some Zachary Richard for you Jenn!

Had a great sunny day yesterday to send everyone home to NOLA this morning with a little local sunburn. :D

Don't miss 'em! I have to admit I first loved them because of their parents. Everyone in the Canadian folk/roots scene knows Len Podolak's dad Mitch, who founded the Winnipeg Folk Festival and cofounded the Calgary and Vancouver Folk Fests, but beyond that local connection, they are just so good. I am amazed by Sarah Dugas' voice. The Dugas family is all musical, dad has a recording studio and the kids were all in a family touring band for years. Not sure if anyone here has heard of Scrüj MacDuhk which was the Podolak/Dugas Celtic band preceeding the formation of the Duhks. The single from their new release Fast Paced World is a killer....Mighty Storm...check it out Freebo!

(At Decatur & Esplanade)

My wife and I caught the first set and thought they sounded great -- billed as "B.I.G.I". They had a percussionist sitting in on a good mix of 'Fess, Meters, and covers (Slippin' Into Darkness really stood out). When I've seen this mix of folks before, Ivan has stepped up as the frontman and is usually pretty dominate in the sound mix. Not this time -- there was a very tight ensemble feel and everyone had plenty of room to make statements before falling back into the groove.

Russell even got that vocal synthesizer of his that sounds like a choir to work on a pounding "Little Liza Jane." The Gods must have been smiling! Glenn David Andrews came up on trombone to close the set and tore it up. (Don't know why GD kept following us around!! Caught his sets at the Strut Friday, Satchmo Saturday, dba Sunday and also caught him sitting in at this show as well as guesting with James Andrews on Sunday!)

The club itself is pretty small with an ornate roof and walls that look like pressed tin. Nice little alley-way off the bar that provided some breeze and relief from the crowd. No inside balcony that I saw, unless you count the two steps up to the back bar!

We saw BIGI at the Balcony. It is the old Matador club and was also Harry Shearer's club a few years back. Think of it as Frenchmen extended--across Esplanade. I also saw Glenn David do his own set there the previous Saturday. That was a great set that was enjoyed by about 25 folks, dancing and singing along.
Now BIGI was packed to the gills and was just f'in awesome. These boys were funking the place up. Yep, Glen David sat in for about the last half of the first set and added something to the vibe. BUTafter the break, he appeared to be wired for sound and was a ummm, distraction. I loved watching Ian, Ivan, George and Russell celebrate the show afterwards- alot of hugging and hand shaking and back slapping.:D
Doug and Sharon, so sorry I didn't know who you were so we could meet. Where were yall during the first set?

What Vic said, the show at the Balcony was awesome. The cover of Billy Preston's 'Nothing from Nothing' was smoking hot!! The only issue was only one tarbender serving the entire place. Threadhead solution: go across the street and buy drinks at Checkpoint Charlies.

Also have to say that Eric Lindell's show at One-Eyed Jack's on Friday was incredible. Opened up with "Looooooozianna Saturday Night," played the rest of the first set without even a break between songs. Second set was more of a jam, he had the crowd totally into the groove.

Can't wait for FestGiving!!

Hey McG...There were quite a few of us in attendance for that one. Eat_Mo, myself, Jada's man Joe, Zydekitty, Corona and Ed, Funkjunkie/KK, Nola, Swag, Yeahyourite and the mrs, Sha, and myself that I can recollect..Miz Seebass even made a brief appearance on the scene.

The club itself is @ 1331 Decatur, site of the old Matador and more recently Oswalds-Harry Anderson's Magic club.

Show was great. Sound was good and the beer was hard to get to because of the small bar I made a couple of beer runs to checkpoint charlies when I could not get to my beloved ambah!

Hey kids, the just dropping in for a quick pit stop to say hi and give you an update on dad and about Satchmo weekend.

It was HOT but so fun, sorry i missed fest on Sunday and all those pudding and jello shots. Made me sad but we just couldn't do the heat again and toured around. Caught Good Enough For Good Times (Rob Mecurio, Jeff Raines- Galactic) and that band tears it up with some SERIOUS hard hitting funk. Their keyboard player is off the charts...never seen anything like it in awhile. Definitely worth seeing them..they are now one of my all time favorite Nola bands and will make it a point to see them the next time I'm in town. The Ivan/Ian/Porter/Batiste gig was fantastic too...lots of funk that weekend :)

Pensacola Beach was fantastic and utterly relaxing. Will definitely go back, especially since it's only a 3 hour drive! Drove the gulf coast through Mississippi and was very, very saddened to see that it's been pretty wiped out right up to Biloxi. Very, very sad :(

Loved seeing all the Threadheads in town and had a nice dinner out with the Rosetrees and Jamn's Tuesday night. Was so grateful to have made this trip. Took it a bit quieter this time and thank god we did because we came back to a nightmare :(

Well Dad was in rough shape when we got back...lots of feeding tube, swallowing test, G-tube issues....his breathing was out of control yesterday and he kept hyperventilating. Got the call from the hospital at 2 am as they had to call a code blue due to respiratory distress. He had to be intubated again and was put back in ICU. We are RIGHT BACK to where we started 5 weeks ago....I can't f'in believe it and am so completely disheartened and discouraged. I'm also very, very angry and frustrated. Not sure what's going to happen next but I sure as hell know what life's going to be like the next while....back to work on Monday though. I have no time left. Feeling like not even karma is gonna do the trick this time and am wondering if we're out of miracles. Just hopeless right now....and exhausted.

So that's my story...if I'm out of the loop again for awhile, this is why. Love ya xoxo

On to the uplifting part: Who saw this article in the T-P about Yoshio Toyama?

Musician's pilgrimage ends on a sweet note in New Orleans
Posted by Sheila Stroup, the Times-Picayune August 05, 2008
Categories: Satchmofest, Top News

http://blog.nola.com/sheilastroup/2008/08/medium_yoshi1.jpg
Yoshio Toyama sings "Happy Birthday" for the late Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. Toyama, known as the "Satchmo of Japan", played with the original Satchmo when he was still alive.

When Yoshio Toyama came into St. Augustine Church Sunday morning, he looked like he was walking on air.

He and his wife, Keiko, were in their favorite American city for their favorite weekend. And he had been asked to play his trumpet with the Treme Brass Band at the annual Satchmo SummerFest Jazz Mass.

I caught up with him when he was looking over the music before the service started. "I don't know these songs, but I'll figure it out," he said, laughing.

For Yoshio, the weekend was as sweet as the icing on Satchmo's cake: He had delivered donated instruments to Carver High School. He had played "Happy Birthday to Satchmo" with Kermit Ruffins. And he'd had a large enthusiastic crowd when his band performed.

"It couldn't get any better."

http://blog.nola.com/sheilastroup/2008/08/medium_yoshi.jpg
From left: Yoshio Toyama, Kermit Ruffins, and Freddie Lonzo play a jazz set in honor of Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong.

--- A love affair ---

Yoshio has been called "the Satchmo of Japan."

He fell in love with the music of Louis Armstrong as a teenager, and he and Keiko came here in 1968 to study traditional jazz with the masters at Preservation Hall. They went back to Tokyo in 1973 and have been playing traditional jazz in Japan ever since.

I met them at Carver High School in 2003 when they gave the band 39 new instruments from the Wonderful World of Jazz Foundation of Japan.

"The Japanese people want to thank the United States, New Orleans and Satchmo for giving the world such wonderful music called jazz," Yoshio told the students.

The Toyamas, both passionate about jazz, started the foundation in 1994 because of the violence they saw when they made frequent pilgrimages to the Crescent City.

"We wanted to give musical instruments to children in the city of Satchmo, who live surrounded by guns and drugs," Yoshio said.

--- Key to the city ---

Since that time, Yoshio and Keiko have delivered more than 700 instruments to New Orleans. And after the hurricane, they raised more than $110,000 for professional musicians who lost so much in the storm.

"We were very glad we were able to help out a little bit," Yoshio said.

Every year the Toyamas bring their gifts to the city. This year, they were surprised to receive a gift in return. It happened at the end of the rousing Jazz Mass Sunday morning.

New Orleans City Councilwoman Jackie Clarkson and Ernest Collins from the mayor's office presented them with a key to the city, to thank them for all they've done for the children of New Orleans.

"My wife was bawling when we got it. Me, too," Yoshio said. "This was something we never expected."

They flew off from Louis Armstrong International Airport on Monday, but they'll be back. They know what it means to miss New Orleans. That's where they left their hearts.
