He gives some hints about who will play on what stage, and also says there is one more major slot to be filled:

Really? The line up looks really full and Festdave said on another post that it was basically full . . . Or so I interpreted.

Nope, article says one more "Big slot" to fill....also gave a few hints about what BNA are playing at which stage....might have to move my camp to the Gentilly big stage (which will also have a video screen this year) a couple of days.....

Cubes. Don't know about the cubes. I'm thinking I'm not gonna be liking the cubes this year. I'm thinking that's gonna have to be a Level 3 Challenge. An adventure for sure. Okay, I'm gonna go have a dink now.

" Rod Stewart, ... Ludacris..."
"Davis said. "We have the most national jazz acts we've ever had. The gospel headliners are back. At Congo Square, we have John Legend, Jill Scott, George Benson, Ludacris and New Edition -- that's like the Essence Music Festival. "
Since when has the goal of JAZZ FEST become to be just "like the Essence Music Festival"?!?!? ...Now the only thing left is to move it to the superdome?
...Breaks my heart. Is there any outrage? I love the fest, I loved it for my first time 12 years ago, and I still love it now, but it breaks my heart when I continually see various manifestations of this city being screwed and sold a bag of sh** with a silver lining, and everyone sucks it up, .... Sometimes it seems for a city so devoted to its diversity and unique culture, we've actually started to buy into the views of the mainstream, and have developed such an inferiority complex that expressing outrage is tantamount to treason.
AND, if the goal is indeed to make the fest "like the Essence Music Festival", how about bringing back the featured cultural exhibits? What ever happened to those? That used to be one of my favorite parts of the fest. Now any remnant of this has been relegated to the AC'd grandstands where you can go learn about crawfish and nutria.....
And, the Big Chief VIP remain..... gone are the grassroots days of jazzfest, where, despite who you may think you are on the outside, once you're inside, everyone is equal - .... not anymore.....
And still I wonder..... (Yes, as many say, (including myself once), it's still a bargain), what kind of mismanaged blunder does it take to claim to barely stay afloat at $45/day, when not too long ago at all, $12/day seemed sufficient. I've said over the last several years I'd be happy to spend even more on tickets if pockets must be lined so thickly, IF and only if, they would get rid of big name national acts and return to more opportunities to hear something new, someone you never heard of before..... Now it seems it continues to be the worst of both worlds. Most all of my best experiences at the fest have been being exposed to something NEW, something I'd never heard before. If I wanted to go to a Rod Stewart concert I would - but I'd rather go to jazzfest.....
And yes again, the prices are still a bargain, and great times are to be had - though as someone here pointed out, the prices are a bargain on a national scale - not for new orleans. I'd be very curious to see stats on a survey comparing total fest attendance over the years, compared to total local attendance. Why is it that every passing year lately I look around at the people around me and feel like I might as be in Idaho.....?

I remember last year seeing a flyer for something that looked like a new effort for a fest more modeled on the old jazz fest - it read something like, "all the bbq and beer the fest doesn't want you to bring in, none of the national stadium acts the fest keeps bringing, .... etc" Does anyone remember seeing this or know anything about it?

This has been an ongoing discussion on this board for a long time, and actually for a number of years.

However, it is unusual that someone's very first post to the board is a negative rant -- usually that takes us all a while.

Welcome anyway! Please drop in at the Introduce Yourself thread and tell us a little about yourself.

Ainulindale:
ChazFest will be happening again this year, and an effort is made at that fest to have local acts who for some reason didn't get asked to Jazz Fest (although there may be a few who play there, too). It will be on the Thursday of the second week, it will be held at the Truck Farm, and more info will be forthcoming on the acts, the food, the beer (last year was Stella and Abita),etc. etc. There was a bit of a problem last year with the weather, but it improved as the day went on, and a grand time was had by all!

It makes me smile to see this subject come up again. I have heard the same complaints since the first year I attended fest in 1980. Even back then, there were BNA's and people complained. This is nothing new. It is a part of fest and has been for several decades.
