Reading the bumping of the old board post by Windowman about the beginnings of Jazzfest made me wonder about early recollections from those of you who were there in the beginning. I know Ibjamn and Rosetree go way back. I'd love to hear some stories and rememories from the fests in the earliest days.

Reading the bumping of the old board post by Windowman about the beginnings of Jazzfest made me wonder about early recollections from those of you who were there in the beginning. I know Ibjamn and Rosetree go way back. I'd love to hear some stories and rememories from the fests in the earliest days.
My first fests were in the early 80's. We brought my 1 year old nephew to my first fest. Back then, we were allowed to bring in a wagon, tent, cooler, etc. I remember our first day setting up at the Gentilly stage towards the back, and setting up a tent for the baby.
I also remember him running around dancing to the music at Economy Hall on the little dance floor there.
That year I saw MossMan. Also the Herd of Nutria were running strong - they stormed through the grandstand where the cooking demo was going on - wearing skins and beating drums - it was a blast.
I remember going to a really small stage to hear Cajun music for the first time - almost looked like a little house with a front porch. And seeing those Cajun dancers having a great time.
And at night (not my first year, but later)- the gigs on the Riverboat President and at the Saenger Theater were awesome - AND they were put on by the fest people.
This was before the web became big, so the only way to get the news about the fest was to sign up to receive the little fold-out brochure they'd send in the mail. I'd pour over it, highlighting fest acts and night acts I wanted to see. No cubes - just lists of performers.
Once you got into town you picked up the local weekly entertainment paper (I think this may have been pre-offbeat, not sure), to check out who was at the clubs, and also to finally see the cubes. After the fest, we'd head over to The Metronome (record store), to pick up music by all of the folks we'd seen.
While my brothers family stayed camped at Gentilly, I wandered around by myself, taking in all of the sights, sounds and smells of Fest. I had a big permagrin on, couldn't hardly believe what I was seeing and hearing!
So many of the classic NOLA performers were there - Little Queenie, Frankie Ford, the "Sitting on my YaYA" guy, Snooks, Germaine, Earl King, the Nevilles, Ernie K-Doe. It was my first time seeing Injuns too.
My brother has a whole file drawer full of memorabilia, I've got to get my hands on it one of these days, so I can remember more.

I never saw the Herd of Nutria, but I remember Moss Man well. I used to do my shopping at Record Ron's and Jim Russell's and Goldmine. That was definitely pre-Offbeat. I personally killed Wavelength. I subscribed, and it was over. That happened to me with several magazines I liked. For many years I wouldn't subscribe to Offbeat for fear I would kill it as well. Apparently the curse has been lifted, because I subscribed some years ago, and they're still there.

My history with the jazzfest is only 10 years long but I remember the infield blues stage which was located where jazz and heritage stage is now. I remember wing and his lady Sana? dancing around fest together. I remember my first watermelon sacrifice. I remember a grandstand accessible to all. I remember my first taste of crawfish bread. :D

I know I wasn't there in the beginning but my first fest was in 1988. Went with a buddy of mine after I heard read about the fest. i couldn't believe how cool it all was. You could buy as many beers as you wanted?? I got seperated from my friend and he ended up buying about 6 beers and passing them out as he made his way to the front of the stage to see Los Lobos and Little Feet.
I remember we got there a day too late to see Stevie Ray Vaughan on the riverboat. I saw Gatemouth Brown that first time as well as some cajun and zydeco bands and fell in love with that music. James Brown appeared too and I recently read that the godfather was hopped up on numerous drugs that day which would explain his rather erratic performance.
I ate alligator on a stick which was a big deal for me as I wasn't too adventerous in the food tasting department. I've gotten much better since then.
I really want to hear from the old timers :p who were there from the start.
Perhaps folks can post a picture from there first fest like this one of me enjoying a beverage in '88.

That is indeed gentilly. You can see the Burger King on the top right of banner along with WVUE(?) 8.
My first fest wasn't till '96, and I think I've lost those photos. But this thread got me looking back at my 1997 pix.
A few observations...
The technology to digitize film photos was still primitive. I think that's why these pictures look old.
I had a beard(!). And more hair.
Jazzfest was crowded even back then.

Can't say I was there at the start, but my first Jazzfest was 1978. Took a Greyhound bus from Aspen, $300 in my pocket, another $300 on the way. Stayed a month, at Lee Circle YMCA, trying to make it permanent (working at labor pools) when it rained 19" in a day. Didn't have anything to lose in the flood, it was interesting, but when the sun came out after the flood it was unbearable. Sadly, stuck out my thumb & headed North, knowing I had found a new "home away from home" & vowing to return (missed 3 JFs in the ensuing 30 years).
Hate to sound like an old fart, but I can't help it...
JF was better back then, still undiscovered by us "tourons". Locals asked how I had ever heard of it, now its majority tourist. Like somebody said, folks could bring in "Lil red wagons" full of booze & food, New Orleanians know how to pahty; not just imbibing, but second lining, general craziness (sex, drugs & rock'n'roll)
Old Blues Stage was so much better than that sucky, controlled tent.
LOTS more black folk. People would regularly get possessed by the Holy Ghost in the Gospel tent.
Plus, everybody was still alive. Since I started going, we've lost (among others): Prof. Longhair, James Booker, Lightnin Hopkins, Clifton Chenier, Rockin Dopsie Sr., Boozoo, Beau Jocque, John Delafose, Earl King, Ernie K-Doe, Lee Dorsey, James Brown, Albert King, Gatemouth, Exuma, RObert Pete Williams, Muddy, Bo Diddley, Champion Jack Dupree, Ironing Board Sam, Cousin Joe, Tuts Washington, Roosevelt Sykes, SRV, AND Allison Miner who helped start it all. I'm sure I left out plenty...
Not as many local legends now, more national acts.
Riverboat? OMG, one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life was Gatemouth, Albert King & My first ever Stevie Ray experience, second row center, psychedelicized. Holy %&$*!!!
You could go to Tip's and actually have a conversation with Fess or Booker, instead of looking at a bust...Booker would ALWAYS let you get him hi....
The stories are endless, and age wears us down...
Despite my nostalgia, Jazzfest is still the best thing going

It's a little scary thinking that I'd been hearing about, and encouraged to go to, Jazzfest - longer than I've been GOING to it! But now that I'm a committed Festavarian, I'm almost over trying to make up for lost time. ;) My old bandleader, Tommy, started going in the 70's when it was still off Rampart in Congo Square and, and he kept going after the migration to the racetrack. He'd stay in a flop out by the racetrack and arrange his business to take him through New Orleans the same time every year to coincide with Jazzfest. I don't think he quite gets the scale of the Fest in the timeframe I've been going (post 90's). Best illustration of that is him telling me before we left this year to "get a hug from Al Green" after his performance - something he counted on getting everytime he got sanctified by one of Al's performances. Can you imagine getting close enough to get a hug at his last show, even WITH the uber-grandmaster-family-member-all-access-platinum-pass?
i was just reading a small quip in a 1966 downbeat magazine that said that george weir was postponing the first integrated music festival in the south to be held in new orleans until 1967 in order to better promote and organize the festival..the article went on to say that the real reason was that black football players in new orleans to play a exhibition game for the upstart afl were being harassed, the game was moved to houston........the rest is history

Yes, Mr Stax, I am a loooong time exhibitor. But sad to say, until I came on board here, I did not go to the Fest to play--- only for w*rk. You know the busman's holiday kinda thing.....I did go occasionally for some BNAs, but just to go and enjoy----not often. I did roam around and catch snippets here and there while Mrs.RT w*rked the booth.
It is just a different experience for me. I can tell you about the changes and memories of the Crafts areas, but that's probably not what people are interested in.
I will tell you that in the last couple of years that I have been on here, my horizons have expanded 100-fold. I am going and seeing a much wider variety of music that I did before.
....and from the bottom of my heart, I thank the Threadheads for that!!!!!!:D

I'm pretty sure people who post here are infatuated with anything JF. Try us!
My earliest Fest was in '80. It was a very small, uncrowded fest. Mostly local & regional acts. A big highlight for me seeing Al Hirt. BNA's were artists such as Carl Perkins. Kentwood gave out water for free! And the beer was Schlitz. The biggest BNA's were at Fest produced night shows, mainly on the Riverboat President. Acts like James Brown, Fats, Four Tops. We didn't know of any happening clubs, other than Tip's, but that's where I first saw the Neville Bros. The intoxication of my first few fests has never left me, obviously!

I remember first getting access at work to the Internet, only when I was filling in sitting up front in the Executive Office and discovering the old purple board and its crazy krew of characters and real-time posts. No threads, just stream of consciousness, from a shitload of big-time C-H-A-R-A-C-T-E-R-S (read Big Chief Pony dancer tawkin hysterical englais/cubano, walking music encylopedias (e.g. Bethesday Boy), back-in-day roadies/hippies (Steve LBI), college professors (Dr. Lamb) ......... music and fest freaks all. Became addicted in a matter of hours - in fact, Neen Atlanta emailed me, saying, "you're hooked already, aren't you?" My online alter-ego became Zydeco Bonnie for the music/dance I had not too long ago fallen in love with and now lived for, soon to be affectionately shortened, in 'netspeak to Zybon and then ZBonnie. Purple board crashed and it was on to the Pet de Kat Krewe message board, where my proudest accomplishment was starting the Raunchy, Risque and Ribald (RRR) folder, where many an amusing and erotic chapter story based on sex, drugs, and rock and roll in New Orleans was joyfully developed one post at a time. Now DEM were da days!!!!

I have no idea where I read it, but I'm pretty sure moss man committed suicide a while back. I just spent a half an hour trying to find reference for it to no avail. My favorite memory of him wasn't at fest but at an Irish channel St. Pat's day parade in 1986. David Duke was riding/standing up in the back of a red convertible, in the parade. Moss man went up to him, as if to shake his hand and pulled him out of the car!! The crowd kind of surrounded moss man which allowed him to escape and the cops didn't seemed too interested in pursuing him. Duke had to be taken to the hospital.
Last weekend I was going through old pictures, looking for family pics and ran across a few pics at Jazz Fest in the early 80's, but didn't pull them out, but I'll go thru them again and post them here.

That David Duke story cracks me up. I can see the police trying to describe "the perp" to dispatch. Prolly why they decided to let him go:)....

I know I was staying at the Hyatt (Superdome), but I'm not sure how we got to the 'fest grounds. I think we were looking for something to do, and the front desk suggested we check out "Jazzfest".
I remember seeing Bonnie Raitt, and Ry Cooder, (I believe). It was a long weekend, in another life. There's a silly picture buried somewhere in my archives; nothing but a young fool; rockin' a permagrin and (his own) hand painted t-shirt.

Last weekend I was going through old pictures, looking for family pics and ran across a few pics at Jazz Fest in the early 80's, but didn't pull them out, but I'll go thru them again and post them here.
When this thread started way back when I was waiting for you to post some pixs. So I'll continue to wait. :(

Whew, update. I found some! :) I lost thousands of pics in the storm, but I found some from the early 80s. Lots of them are irrelevant; crowd shots and such, but there are some glaring difference between these pics & Fest these days: MUCH smaller crowds, smaller stages and NO totems. Anyway, they are piled up next to my scanner and tomorrow they will be posted here. :) I also found some vintage pics of music I saw at Tip's night shows; the Rads, Lil Queenie, Zachary Richard, Andy J. Forrest and Astral project with some VERY young looking musicians. I'll post those too. :) Now, I'm going to bed because if I start scanning them in now, I'll be up all night!

Hey, I might be in one of those irrelevant crowd shots....;)

OK! I just scanned in 40 pics, from 1982-1986 onto facebook. I have no earthly idea which pics are from what year, but I can tell by pics of me & my hairstyle which years some of them are. Tomorrow I'll post a few over here, but here's the link on facebook. (I don't think you have to have facebook to view them.)
Tomorrow I'll scan in the Tip's night show pics from the same years.

yeah, I saw it. Mine was pretty funky. I remember those old tents. I liked it when we were on the infield. Everyone came by. The only drawback was that area flooded!

OMG, there I am! (red tee shirt) I remember that. I was real shy and said a few things to other threadheads. But, it was a brief encounter for me, and off I went to some act that I just couldn't miss. But it was neat placing faces with the forum names. My, we've certainly come a long way!:)

I was at that show as well. Rickie Lee took forever to come out. My wife can't see her without thinking of that night. There were some great night shows there back in the day.
I think the Nevilles Bros. were the headline act that night

I will never forget the year they use the River Tent for concerts and it blew down after the Robert Cray show. The George Benson show relocated the next evening to Municipal. That is one show I will never forget.

I don't remember the year we first started coming to Jazz Fest, it was somewhere in the mid seventies, I was a kid - 10 or 12 years old or so... My mom took me to Jazz Fest every year. She would let me and my little brother miss school to come to Jazz Fest for the cultural experience.
I would hang with Claudia the Praline Lady, walked throughout the fest grounds with her and her cart and help her sell Pralines (and such). Got to eat pralines as payment - I was a happy kid!
Somewhere along the way, my favorite Fest food showed up - Oyster Patties. No combo back then, just the Oyster Patties YUM!
I've been to every Jazz Fest since then (except one).
Don't have any pictures, lost them in Katrina
My daughter has now been to every jazz fest in her 16 years too!
