BNAs are nothing to get too excited about. Anyone know if Rod Stewart's current show is full of impotent romantic ballads or does he actually rock as much as a 60 year old man is capable of? (and i dont mean to be mean-rod in the day made some great records that achieved enormous commercial success and have stood the test of critical time). Van and Lucinda top my list of "well, what are we going to get today?" performers. (last time i saw Lucinda at JF was my all time disappointment). New Edition/George Benson/Richie Havens/JLL? Please.
That snidely said, some of the other BNAs, although i have little to no interest in seeing them (Norah, ZZ, Brad P, Crows) seem quite nice. For me, it will be making the rounds for the great great NOLA based talent, and that will suffice quite wonderfully.
Kudos for booking Rob Wagner Trio, specifically. And that Irma tribute to MJ sounds delightful as well. And then there is........(I, just like you, could do this all day long)

Same as Oz, there's so much it's hard to get my head around it all. Van, Lucinda, T Bone, Bonnie, Pharoah Sanders, Allmans, plus two outright legends like Jerry Lee Lewis and Mose Allison. And then all of the locals, all of 'em artists I've dreamed of seein' for years. And then I'm wide open to suggestions from anyone else. Couldn't it go for a little bit longer?

I cant buy a thrill, this lineup has me doing pretzel logic in my head. I cant believe the Royal Scam Ticketbastard is pulling this year, but I guess I'll just have to get over it and begin my countdown to ecstasy ... after all in a mere few months I'll be a nightfly on the town in New Orleans

Here's a review from last week:
http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/sptimes/access/1196623941.html?dids=1196623941:1196623941&FMT=FT&FMTS=ABS:FT&date=Jan+18%2C+2007&author=MARTY+CLEAR&pub=St.+Petersburg+Times&edition=&startpage=2.B&desc=Classic+Rod+wears+well
At Wednesday evening's show at the St. Pete Times Forum, Stewart offered a spotty but enjoyable retrospective. He went back to Faces days for Ooh La La, strummed an acoustic guitar for Dirty Old Town from his first solo record, and recollected some of his old fire on such hits as You Wear It Well, Every Picture Tells a Story and I'm Losing You.
First concert I ever attended was Rod and the Faces with Free opening, 1972 at Tampa Stadium. My uncle took me--I was 12. I think Maggie May was number 1 on the charts then. Great show, as best I remember. The disco days have soured me on Rod; don't know if I'll catch any of his show at Fest. But I'll appreciate the short beer and portolet lines on the other side of the Fairgrounds.

Thanks Amy, I just may take you up on that ... However, I'm really not that angry about it (though do have a general disdain for TicketF@#*er), If you know Steely Dan, you'd recognize that there are five or six album titles in my post, and I was trying to find clever ways to work them in.

Oops, yep first weekend. I've always gone second weekend, but I've also always made plans before the lineup was announced. No plans yet this year, so based on the lineup, I gotta change it up and go first weekend (although I might stick around through the week and catch second Friday before heading home).

Hey Now Just saw the lineup! This might be the BEST line up for my personal tastes I have seen in my 11 consecutive years of attendance. Van, George Benson, Bonnie Raitt, Counting Crows, The Allmans, Soulive... Of course local acts Radiators, George Porter, Subdudes, Galatic.... The only missing link is the Nevilles/Meters and I still hold firm faith that there will be performances by both.... This will be a year that Jazzfest will resonate on a global scale (for good or ill) If you love live music, I can not see missing Fest 07. God Bless New Orleans!!!

I will probably look forward to seeing the two Marsalises during the second weekend. I won't be there the first weekend, but I totally recommend Pharoah Sanders.
I caught him for the first time this holiday season at a jazz club in NYC. He opened up with an amazing version of "My Favorite Things'' that would have made Coltrane proud. He played a couple of ballets and a couple of upbeat numbers. I wanted desperately to stay for the second set, but I had to catch a train. Don't miss him. You might never get the chance again.

Yeah, I know I'm not going to get to see all of them :) I think I had 25 first weekend and 23 second, shoot, what are there, 5 acts a stage per day, max I could get in a weekend sitting through all sets is 15 I suppose. So much to choose from, but top of mind:
Steely Dan (they could suck and I'd think it was out of this world, as I have loved them forever
Van Morrison (for those who are wondering what we're gonna get, I'll send on a little report next month as my pal the promoter is presenting Van on Feb 27/28 in Alberta and I'll see him in Calgary. Van's rider says "no alcohol backstage or in hotel room" in a font that's about one inch high. Van has dried out.)
Bonnie and Jon (sure hope we get to see Jon on his own too)
Nora, Lucinda, Gillian, Irma, Ingrid, Marcia, Teressa
ABB

Bonerama and Boutte
Really there's no one I don't want to see, may have to toss a coin in some time slots.

funkkjunkie: George Benson played one of the JF evening concerts in 1989. It was one of those magical nights that you will never be able to duplicate. We all entered the "zone" that night. When the music takes over your body and soul. The place was rocking that night. Everyone, even the people in the balcony were standing and dancing. I will never forget that show. Like I said above, one of the top 5 shows in 25 years of JF. btw: I had to add Bruce to that list in 2006.

I've had a nightmare attack of the FOMS ever since the bill went up. The only way I'm gonna deal with the anxiety is have only 3 musts sees per weekend and if they clash, well just shoot me. First weekend, JLL, Van Morrison and New Orleans Social Club. Second weekend, Irma's tribute to Mahalia Jackson, Buckwheat and the Allmans.

Just wanted to mention The Woodshed again. The first woodshed was in the jazz tent in 04 and featured Terrence Higgins vs Stanton Moore. Drummers duking it out. They each chose their band members and as I recall, it went like this: Higgins's song of choice, Moore's song of choice, each interprets the same song. Then jamming and playing off each other. OMG! By the end, the rail area in front of the chairs that is usually kept void of musiclovers was jampacked and no way were we going anywhere.
This time: Roland Guerin vs. James Singleton. Bass players going at it. Oh, yeaaah.

Kirk Joseph plays sousaphone with the Dozen and has his own band, Kirk Joseph's backyard groove. They closed out one day at the heritage stage last year. A gnat got onstage and shook her hair around. a couple years ago he led a tribute to his dad at economy. Kirk played with the Underdawgs when we saw them in Nov at Les Bon Temps Roule.

I had the pleasure of seeing Pete Fountain at the Hollywood Casino in Bay St. Louis this past weekend. Even though he's pushing 77 years old, the guy can still bring it. He and his band took turns kicking out licks for a bunch of New Orleans standards. And the best part of all was the sheer joy he expressed as he performed. The man is a treasure, and should be on your "must see" list at Jazzfest.

I am already experiencing of heavy FOMS in anticipation of how this festival may close -- Harry Connick on the main stage, Allen T. on the other, and Branford Marsalis in the Jazz Tent. If so, my inclination would be to see Branford first, then try to pull myself away to catch Allen T. on the way out --- unless, of course, Allen T. is available to catch the "Daze Between'' at Snugs or something.
I wish all my choices in life were like this. Anyone seeing this shaking out differently, I mean the stage arrangements at the end? I am assuming Steely Dan and then Connick to close the main stage
It may seem counter-intuitive, but my "must sees'' change depending on what else is going on. Looking at the dailies, The Allman Brothers are becoming a must see, since they won't be playing the same date and time as Marsalis, for example.
So far, I have underlined on the dailes --George Benson, Ivan Neville, World Saxophone Group (sounds cool; anyone know anything about it?) Ellis Marsalis, Amanda Shaw, AB, Galactic, Nicholas Payton, Papa Grows Funk in addition to the ones I mentioned above.
Christ, I am getting excited just thinking about this!

From Wiki: The World Saxophone Quartet is a jazz group founded in 1977.
The original members were Julius Hemphill (alto and soprano saxophone, flute), Oliver Lake (alto and soprano saxophone), Hamiet Bluiett (baritone saxophone, alto clarinet), and David Murray (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet). The first three had worked together as members of the Black Artists' Group in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1989, Hemphill left the group due to illness, and several saxophonists have filled his chair in the years since. The first of these was Arthur Blythe, followed by Eric Person, James Spaulding, and John Purcell.
The group principally recorded and performed as a quartet, usually with a lineup of two altos, tenor, and baritone (reflecting the composition of a classical string quartet), but were also joined occasionally by drummers, bassists, and other musicians.

From allmusic.com
Biography by Chris Kelsey
Probably the first of several saxophone-only ensembles who proliferated in jazz after 1975, the WSQ is unquestionably the most commercially (and, arguably, the most creatively) successful. Of course, commercial success is a relative thing in jazz, especially when one is speaking of an avant-garde group. But unlike most free jazz artists, the WSQ managed to attract an audience of significant size; large enough to have garnered a major-label record deal in the '80s, an almost unheard-of occurrence in that retro-jazz decade. The band did it on merit, too, with only a hint of compromise (manifested mainly by albums of R&B and Duke Ellington covers). By the time their first record on Elektra/Musician came out in 1986, the band had evolved from their fire-breathing, free-improvising, ad-hoc beginnings into a smooth-playing, compositionally minded, well-rehearsed band. At their creative peak, the group melded jazz-based, harmonically adventurous improvisation with sophisticated composition. All of the group's original members (Julius Hemphill, alto; Oliver Lake, alto; David Murray, tenor; and Hamiet Bluiett, baritone) were estimable composers as well as improvisers. Each complimented the whole, making them even greater than the considerable sum of their parts. As a composer, Hemphill drew on European techniques (though his tunes were not without an unalloyed jazz component), while Bluiett was steeped in blues and funk. Lake and Murray fell somewhere in between. As soloists and writers, the early WSQ covered all the bases.
The WSQ were founded in 1976 after the four original members (all of them well-established solo artists) accepted an offer by Ed Jordan, the chairman of the music department at Southern University in New Orleans, to conduct a series of clinics and performances with and without a local rhythm section. The enthusiastic audience response to the unaccompanied saxophones convinced the musicians to develop the concept. They played a gig at the (now defunct) Tin Palace in New York, calling the group the Real New York Saxophone Quartet. They were later forced to change the name after reportedly being threatened with a lawsuit by the preexisting New York Saxophone Quartet; hence, the World Saxophone Quartet. In 1977, the band recorded their first album, an almost completely improvised effort called Point of No Return, for the Moers Music label. Later releases on Black Saint document the band's increasing interest in composition. The membership stayed constant until Hemphill's departure in 1989. Arthur Blythe was the first of Hemphill's several replacements. Blythe was with the band from 1990-1992, and from 1994-1995. James Spaulding joined briefly in 1993, and was quickly replaced by Eric Person. In 1996, after Blythe's second tenure, John Purcell took and held the chair.
Although they're a sax-oriented group, the WSQ's members have been multi-instrumentalists. The band always incorporated a wide variety of woodwinds into their sound. After Rhythm & Blues (1986, Elektra/Musician), the WSQ began using other musicians in their recordings and performances. Metamorphosis (1990, Elektra/Musician) added African drummers and electric bassist Melvin Gibbs. Later records utilized pianists, vocalists, bassists, and drummers. In adding other musicians, the band sacrificed part of their distinctiveness. The novelty of the band's original approach, and their ability to swing so hard sans rhythm, set them apart. By the end of the '90s, the WSQ had lost their major-label deal and much of their identity.

Man, I miss Othar Turner. His picnics in Mississippi were some of the greatest experiences I've ever had.

Aw dawg, now you got me started on "my kids". We were at otha's last picnic. My best friend won the raffle for one of his handmade fifes and it still resides in a place of honor in my home. My friend juana and I try to see the current Rising star band any time we can. It includes Sharde, who is now 16 and brings the most beautiful sound out of the fife and has a lovely voice, Little Bill, and two more younguns whose names escape me, who are otha's grandkids or nephews. AND they still have the picnic every last weekend in August. They played at NMAS's 10 year anniversary party in Memphis and at Kenny Brown's picnic. I expect to see them again at the picnic-June 28 and 29 in Potts Camp, MS. It was my fave fest of the summer in 06. Oh, and Sharde plays a mean djembe too.

David Murray is *outstanding*. If he is part of the WSG this year, it will be a "can't miss" event, in the cherished tradition of all things FOMS.... ;)
One of my favorite all-time musical experiences from Fest was David Murray at the Jazz Tent (back when it was on the grass near Congo Square/Fais-Do-Do). He did a set with his Group, and also had special guest Archie Shepp, another legendary-but-not-well-known sax player from the Coltrane era. It was DUMPING rain that day, but we got over to the Jazz Tent one song before the end of the previous band, and David Murray Group was the last Jazz Tent act of that day...our prediction of timing worked, and right when the previous act ended, an older couple got up from center aisle 4th row seats, and we scored a sweet spot!! 15 minutes later, DMG started and proceeded to blow me away for the next hour-plus -- forgot all about the rain and my wet socks! Since them I have always tried to catch him whenever he played in my area, though he does experiment with many styles of music, so it's always something different -- usually very good -- whenever you see him on tour. Kind of like Donald Harrison Jr. and his varying ventures into jazz, funk, African, traditional New Orleans, etc.
Highly recommended CD - David Murray - "Shakill's Warrior"
Also, for fellow Dead fans out there, David Murray Octet released an album of reworked instrumental GD covers called "Dark Star: Music of the Grateful Dead" - for a "cover" album, it is a very strong album.

World Sax Quartet - They are definitely a "must see"! They play with such abandon and joy and plain wackiness. They can take it pretty out sometimes.
Neen, you are so right. As someone else mentioned if David Murray is playing with them, the performance will definitely be a must see.

Any drum circle I have ever observed is strictly of the groove or spiritual kind, Corona. There was always bound to be one or a few in the lots at dead shows and I have seen them in the spiritual context of pow-wows. Interesting to see which one does perform.
