Finally, a year in which I don't gots to pick one weekend over another. Good thing, too, cuz it looks like a very tough choice, though if I were in that unenviable position, I'd pick numero uno.
I'm READY!

Good, Lord!! I haven't even had my coffee yet!!! I was expecting it to be out at noon.??? Need some time, and java, to digest it all. My first hunch is that I'm gonna' wish I was coming 1st weekend instead of second. I did notice how quickly I skipped over the BNA's to see who else was gonna' be there. That's a first for me. Time for some coffee and lettin' it all sink in.

Oh. My. God!! Wowwwwww, I can't believe how AWESOME the lineup is this year. I am soooooooooo coming both weekends and I LOVE almost every single one of the BNA's. My gosh, it reads like an awards show or something. And I already know I'm gonna be having some serious FOMS cuz I know I'm gonna have to miss one of the BNA's. I can't believe. This IS Christmas! I can't believe they got Van Morrison! And Norah Jones, Jill Scott, Bonnie Raitt, Jerry Lee Lewis, George Thoroughgood (saw him; he's great!)
And the second weekend . . . WOW! Harry, Steely Dan Omigod!, ZZTop!, Joss Stone and of course, Ingrid. :)
I'm in heaven. This is their best lineup EVER! Thank you, thank you, thank you to whoever put this lineup together. You have outdone yourself. Truly. I'm giddy over here. Bless you. :D

Wow - what a great lineup. I'm going first weekend, and so glad too. Quite a few acts that I haven't seen live before:
- Van Morrison
- Jerry Lee Lewis
- Pharoah Sanders
- George Thorogood (should be a hoot)
- Richie Havens
Great stuff for the jazz tent too, some I've seen but will definitely check out:
- Arturo Sandoval
- Mose Allison
- Irvan Mayfield
- Lucky Peterson
- Astral Project
And lots of New Orleans favorites. Even CJ Chenier - which usually means Shamat dancing out front!
Although I would have loved to see ZZ Top at fest - what a riot! Hey, maybe if they get scheduled Friday night I can change my tickets to stay an extra day.

ZZ top was my first show ever - when I was 8 or 9 - can't wait to see them again - and Allmans are my fav! (Hoping that means Derek trucks Band and Susan Tedeschi will be kicking around too), pumped to see Joss Stone and so many others...
First weekend looks amazing too - really bummed about missing Soulive - they are my new favorite! But I really can't complain at all... great work festydave and everyone who put the schedule together!

Just knowing how much Eric Krasno enjoys collaborating with other musicians and making the rounds as "special guest", I wouldn't be surprised to see Soulive stick around for a club show or 2 in the "daze between". Or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part!!!!!!
ZZ top was my first show ever
Me too - in 1977. I've managed to see them about once every 10 years since then, so this will be a real treat for me. Fandango!
Rest of the lineup looks great too. I was not expecting it this early so I almost spewed my coffee when the first thing I saw was ZZ Top's picture pop up on my screen. Can't wait can't wait can't wait....

The wider the variety of musicians means the wider the variety of attendees, which means more money for fest.
... Some of the older folks like my Mom who adores Rod Stewart, might decide to come just for that. (not that she is). It's a price deal compared to his concerts.

While I am personally not all that interested in Rod Stewart appearing, I don't get the dissing of the line-up within hours of it being posted.
There is lots of music for everyone. If you don't want to see someone, nobody is going to nail your feet to the ground at that stage.
Let's all just be enthusiastic about there being an enormous range of musical choices for us taking place in the city we love! :D

I personally am glad, too. I can't even stand to be at the fairgrounds when DMB is playing. I love their music, but it is impossible to even move when they are there. I will miss Buffett, as I am a big Parrothead, but that's not why I show up for JF. I can catch him somewhere else. As for the crowds these names will draw, it will be interesting to see. Maybe that's part of the reason for the ticket price increase.?

Great quote in the press release too:
“Jazz Fest is an invitation to move your body and your soul,” said Quint Davis, producer/director of the event. “New Orleans is the best place in the world to listen to music and to sing and dance in an open and loving atmosphere, and this year we’re presenting more music than ever. As always Jazz Fest is going to give Festivalgoers the best opportunity to participate in this city’s powerful and joyful integration of culture and community.”

If the club can accomodate the artists crowd then sometimes ... The Bigger acts used to play the mid size theaters that are all not running currently.

I think the lineup is absolutely FANTASTIC and I can't imagine a negative comment! Of course there are some that aren't for me....but this ain't my private party. This lineup will draw many who are only coming for one BNA, and many of them will realize that the Fest is amazing and they'll get exposed to new music and they'll be back. That's awesome! OMG I LOVE THE FEST! 92 daze yall!
I fully agree, Amyloves! My brother who is coming down for the first time looked at it and his exact words were "holy shit, all this music for 35 bucks a day...Wow" There are acts I do not want to see, but as someone else said I am sure there is an act that is going on that I can catch instead...or better yet someone who I never have seen and get turned on to that music. Good times a comin fo' shur.

I can also add my .02 cents on Van. He is either Good Van or Evil Van. I saw him at a show, gawd must be about 15 years ago or so and he was horrific, playing through a "medley" of hits-just mailed it in, big time. Saw him a few years back and he put on a fantastic show. A couple times in between were mixed so who knows which one shows up.

Neen, I've seen George Thorogood at HOB in New Orleans and he was AWESOME. That can't be nothing but good at the fest. I will definitely try to catch him again. He is a hoot! :D

Like the lineup, but what do people think about the attendence? There are really not as many big names as last year, Buffett, Dylan DMB draw a lot of people, wonder how many these names will.
Im actually glad of all this, maybe less crowds, but worried JazzFest wont make as much money.
What do we think?
Are you kidding? lol, I think the names are just as big or bigger and I can't believe all the BNAs they're having this year. There's a LOT of em! I was just thinking how crowded it was gonna be because of that.

This is more like Jazz Fests past. There is so much bang for your buck (or $35). The BNA aren't the superstar arena-type like Bruce (or a Police reunion or U2 ---snif, snif), but they are big draws. I think that the spread over both weekends is good.
Did anyone catch the part about the reconfiguration of the stages?
"The stage at the Gentilly end will be as large as the main Acura Stage -- with its own video screen -- and will host the likes of Raitt, Jones, Williams, the Allman Brothers and Counting Crows. The Kids Tent is resurrected, as is the newly christened Southern Comfort Blues Tent. The Gospel and Jazz tents are larger, part of a redesign of that corner of the grounds.
"We're responding to demand," Davis said. "With major headliners like Herbie Hancock, jazz was a bigger attraction than the (old) tent could accommodate. It overflowed. Same thing with the Blues Tent. So we've upgraded."
So it looks like the stages are back and bigger and better!!!

Awesome! Now, can I clone myself to be at three stages at once?
A few comments on comments. DMB did not make fest unbearable or overcrowded. We left Acura when his time came and had a great close to our Fest watching CJ Chenier.
Sonia Dada would be awesome. They don't seem to play a lot though. Probably don't need to with the Pritzker fortune behind them. It's likely only Sir Paul is richer and that may not be for long.
Rod Stewart is the great singer of the Jeff Beck Group and was the part of the model Jimmy Page used to form his band, Led Zeppelin. Stewart sang on tear it up versions of "You Shook Me" and "I Ain't Superstitious". I'm sure he will dig deep into those classics and provide an incredible performance of early British Blues. Or provide the most gawdawful version of pop standards ever recorded. Probably the latter.
Big name acts - I'd be a kid in a candy store even without the ABB's and ZZ's and other national touring acts. As much as I'd love to see them, I can always see them on tour. ABB comes every year. So, give me the Subdudes, Irma Thomas, CJ Chenier and all the other local groups that celebrate life with their music. That's what I'm there for.
So.........Laissez les bons temps rouler!

That was quite the pairing for a single weekend,.. and added together with Dylan,.. hmmm,.. I guess this year can easily be considered by some to be "lesser" ... Combine that with a "BIGGER" ticket price and there just might be a smaller crowd.... That wouldn't bother me none at all.... 15% higher price allows for 15% less people and the same "non profit" for the fest... I was always a huge fan of the 2nd Thursday and the resultin' crowd..... Was it the year before last that they included a "first" Thursday... Loved the crowd numbers that day too.........

I was gonnasay that when I heard him being dissed the way he was ... good for you on your little known history, It was in the same planning conversation where Keith Moon christened the band saying Pages idea would go down like a Lead Zeppelin (later respelled to look cooler, like adding an umlaut to your band name!)

So, anyone who longs for the Hot Rod of old must be a little wary. No telling which Rod Stewart might appear in concert.
At Wednesday evening's show at the St. Pete Times Forum, Stewart offered a spotty but enjoyable retrospective. He went back to Faces days for Ooh La La, strummed an acoustic guitar for Dirty Old Town from his first solo record, and recollected some of his old fire on such hits as You Wear It Well, Every Picture Tells a Story and I'm Losing You.
There were a few disco hits that gave Stewart the chance to shake his sexagenarian booty, much to the delight of the middle-aged women in the crowd, and the occasional feckless love song (e.g., Tonight's the Night).
But there were enough moments that recalled his glorious past to keep things interesting for the Stewart connoisseur.

No offense to the jam band crew, but I am really glad we don't have WSP and Dave Matthews crowds to contend with. and no Dylan. Hi csoul...your post got me thinking back to '98 Fest...my absolute hilite at the fest that year was Jimmy Buffett at the (now named) Acura stage. I'll never forget it. Big smiles all around for sure! Cindy

We didn't make it to any of the meet ups. We DID meet some folks while we working at Ms. Lena's 2nd Friday and that was fun. I can be pretty shy when I'm not forced to be social. I plan on working on that this year and making the effort to attend at least 1 Meet up!! Hopefully you'll be there. Your posts always make me smile....(Even when you're defending "w").......

I hear ya', Goose. Buffett is how I found out about JF in the first place. He was playing my first year, 2002. Someone called and said "Have you ever heard of Jazz Fest in NO?" I said no, but if Buffett's there, let's give it a try. And thus, my addiction was born. The rest, as they say, is history!

I'll NEVER understand all the Buffet haters??? Next to missing Bonnie Raitt 1st weekend, Buffet's absence 2nd weekend is the only thing I DON'T like about the whole JF line-up. I've attended MANY Buffet shows, and he is NEVER better than he is at Fest. Last year, he was amazing, opening with City of New Orleans, which is what he closed with at Wrigley Field on the day of the flood. Truly heart felt. And how about when the sun came out while he was talking about his conversation with the Nuns last year??? Oh, well. different strokes, I guess.
I have to agree with you on this one. What is not to love about Buffet???

Wow - I missed that part in my rush to see the lineup. Glad to hear they are doing something about the jazz tent. Whenever anyone with a name played, the overflow was ridiculous. I just hope they find a way to get a little air flow in there too.

Hey watch that last bit,... just say no to politics...........;)
Four-five years back we went into Buffetts place for a bite and some free music on one of the Daze between and we were lead to a table that had a huge picture of Jimbo himself plastered on it,.. we sat for a minute or two and then as soon as a waitress came by to greet us I asked as nicely as I possibly could that we be sat somewhere else... The waitress asked why,.. and I said I really didn't like Jimmy Buffett and I sure didn't want to stare at his smilin' mug the whole time....
She shushed me with an urgent air,.. and sheepishly pointed directly behind me,.. I turned to see Buffett's big melon head smile (real time and real life) shinin' right back my way.... I sure do love that guy now.... :o

I first saw them in Austin a few years ago then never again - they don' t come around here. I could go on and on and on but why repeat the whole lineup???? Looking at the incredible (as always) lineup of names I was getting goosebumps.....damn....what an amazing array of talent! Just seeing all those names in a list confirms why I (we) are addicted to the fest.....does it get any better than that?! I should print it out to show people just why I go year after year. I don't think people who haven't been there realize the mindboggling array of music that the fest offers. I hope that the list wasn't complete as I was looking for one of my favorite gospel groups, the Mighty Chariots of Fire, who are from New Orleans, and play the fest regularly. But, I did not see them listed.....I HOPE they will be there. I kept going over the names thinking I overlooked them. They were so awesome last year, that they were one of the first names I looked for on the lineup. Regardless, I am so stoked and excited now. Also, this will be the first Patry for me.....and now with Mo Fest added......what a time it will be! Going both weekends:D

Okay, now I've caught up on this entire thread. Man, did I miss alot today. :) So when I have my annual review next Monday with said VP (godmother of Joss), I am to ask for her new CD autographed (I am told it is the first where she's written most of it herself), a drumstick, breast, wishbone and some gravy? Do I have that right?
I don't want to her to think I rolled up to the Popeye's takeout window by mistake! Apparently she is very good friends with Joss's parents in the UK. I mentioned that I saw Joss three years ago at fest, and she was so genuinely tickled that someone in Canada had seen her. So I will certainly let her know that several gentlemen of the Threadhead Nation are seriously smitten.
(I seriously will ask to see if we can get something. Amy, I'll let you know how I do on the raffle thread.)

Another fun year ahead of us. I havent read through all the posts but I think the sleeper act could possibly be Rod the Mod. I hope he feels extra blusey and soulfoul as oppsed to "showtuney standardy" ... If you saw Joe Cocker back in 2003 you get my drift.
