I just saw on CNN that State Farm has agreed to pay MILLIONS of dollars to THOUSANDS of policy holders who were suing them over losses to Katrina. Not only does this open the door for policy holders in other states to collect, it also opens the door for policy holders with other carriers.

This settlement was specific to MS homeowners. However they did say that with the success of this lawsuit, others in other states had hope and were beginning to file their own lawsuits

Smart move. The puniative damages alone would have bankrupted them.

Keep in mind that those people in Mississippi really needed the money. The devastation there was incredible. Many communities were literally wiped off the face of the earth. The misery in New Orleans is obviously worth our attention and relief efforts, but the misery in coastal Mississippi and Alabama is no less significant.

Yeah, he may not need it, but if he had the insurance, he's just as eligible to get paid off as anyone else.

Louisiana crayfish harvest recovers from hurricanes

By Russell McCulley Tue Jan 23, 3:37 PM ET

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Louisiana's famed crayfish harvest is bouncing back two years after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the $40-million industry, state and industry officials said on Tuesday.

A mild winter and heavy rainfall in southern Louisiana, where most crayfish are raised, could lead to a bumper crop of the tiny crustaceans, which look like miniature lobsters and are a staple of Cajun cooking across the country.

The really sad thing is that the two women who are vastly responsible for this bail out by the insurance agency are being threatened with jail. They had the "balls" to turn over the files that showed how the insurance company was altering the findings to make it all flood damage and not wind damage...the insurance company would have been taken down in court...they had to settle. Think the other companies might be rethinking their denials??

dt- I remember seeing them on Nightline, or Dateline, or some kind of line. I thought what they did was heroic. How in the world are they justifying threatening them with jail????

I am not sure I understand this. Trent Lott, who dosent thrill me all that much has his home destroyed. Since Trent Lott is a U.S. Senator he is expected to pay for insurance but not collect on a claim? Interesting concept.

csoul, there was an article in the B'ham News yesterday talking about the judge throwing them in jail for contempt for not turning over the files they copied and gave to the Mississippi D.A. and the law firm that is sueing State Farm for fraud. Interesting that State Farm has already surrendered by agreeing to pay claims, but continues to go after these women who exposed the whole scam....I wanted to link you to the Bham News article, but there is charge...not worth the money.

For a refresher about who they are and what they did...

Well, I'm sure in the world of legal eagles, it all makes sense. I think they oughta' get medals, myself. Not jail time.

I'm with you on this one, C-Mike. I don't much care for Mr. Lott's politics, but he and his family had a beautiful old homestead that was wiped from the earth in the storm. If he had his insurance paid up, he has every right to collect on it, even though it is likely that the money won't replace what was lost physically or emotionally.
