If at any point in the SOTU address the President says that he has had an epiphany and now understands that sending in more troops to referee an ancient muslim sectarian blood fued is a really bad idea...

i concur. we need our prayers more than anyone. i was listening to "world have your say" on bbc today.... very disturbing to hear how the rest of the world thinks about us. mostly just how they do not understand that we are not all living in the lap of luxury. a lot of us work 50+ hour weeks and hope and pray that our country will survive such a tragic presidency. i didn't vote for him either time. (granted i was not eligible to vote the first time).... what can we do? i mean i work with nonprofit organizations helping people realize what is going on in this country, but still i feel helpless. i blame the media in part. i really do. no one has a clear idea of what this bureaucracy is doing to our country. it seems too many Americans just eat up whatever is fed to them through the news. yet, most of us are too busy trying to take care of our own lives to spend time trying to prove this guy is ruining our country. the best advice i've heard? learn chinese.
anybody hear about Pfizer? 2,400 jobs lost yesterday in the worst economy of the U.S. (aka Michigan).

He better be worth the time and effort; he's the president of our country.
And I'd rather spend my time trying to do something positive for New Orleans than to waste my time doing something so negative as sitting around trying to prove the president is ruining our country. Negative energy isn't productive.

Negative energy isn't productive.
Well, seeing as how the country has actually been manipulated by the chimp boys handler the last six years, that mean ol' DICK, you couldn't be any more "right",.. their combined negative energy has proven to be a serious downer for the vast majority (especially those pained by the power of a contemplative thought process)...
The neg neo cons sure have put a ton of dirty money into the pockets of their bestest friends in big oil, insurance, and the military complex... Mission accomplished for the fat cats...

I watched Fox news for a few minutes last night and they were hammering,.. absolutely hammering, ex-President Jimmy Carter, because he had a press conference for his new book, and they reported he was only taking pre-approved questions... After six years of such things done on a daily basis by our existing President, I had no idea that kind of thing upset the people at Fox...
A little something from the papers this morning:
"To the bitter end, Bush tries to sell us an al-Maliki government that he clearly doesn't trust and an Iraqi Army that no self-respecting soldier anywhere would trust. Only no one is buying. Finally the Republicans have figured out that Bush might be taking them down with him. He gave away the House because of his stubborn handling of this war, he gave away the Senate. Now he is trying to give away the White House with both hands.
Sen. John McCain and Rudy Giuliani are supposed to be the front-runners of their party the way Sen. Clinton is the front-runner of hers. You tell me how either one of them beats her or anybody else if people continue to see them carrying the President's coat on the war.
Sen. McCain served this country bravely and proudly. If he thinks continuing to align himself with this President, on this war, is some kind of brilliant move toward higher office, he should ask a distinguished soldier like Gen. Colin Powell how that worked out for him.
"Our coalition has learned from our experience in Iraq," George W. Bush says in his State of the Union. "We've adjusted our military tactics and changed our approach to reconstruction. Along the way we have benefited from responsible criticism and counsel offered by members of Congress of both parties. In the coming year, I will continue to reach out and seek your good advice."
Those words are from the State of the Union address he delivered one year ago. Bush's approval rating was at 42% that night. Now CBS has him at 28%, though others have him slightly higher. When Watergate was at high tide, seven months before Richard Nixon resigned, his approval rating was 26%.
One year ago George W. Bush talked about working with the Congress when it was still controlled, all of it, by his own party. Last night he talked about reaching out to Congress again. Yet when he makes the unilateral decision to send more troops to Iraq, when he sends a number that wouldn't have been enough back in the summer of 2003, when we still had a fighting chance over there, he doesn't want to hear from anybody. Then his outgoing vice president, Cheney, goes on television and says that you can't run a war by committee.
Sometimes it is the entire Bush presidency that seems manufactured, one that keeps getting rewritten like his State of the Union. Now he proposes a "special advisory council on the war on terror, made up of leaders in Congress from both political parties. We will share ideas ..."
Now he wants to share ideas, after he sends another 21,500 American soldiers over there, and don't try to stop him. Now he wants to "cross the aisle when there is work to be done."
Now he wants to bring the country together in something other than this one shared idea: that the President has no idea himself how to get us out of Iraq, despite passionate rhetoric we have heard from him before.
"In the end," the President said of Iraq last night, "I chose this course of action because it provides the best chance of success."
You wonder what course of action finished second."

I gotta agree with Saturn here.
I know most of you on this bored are liberals and don't have fuzzy feelings toward our president and that's fine; I respect that. But not everybody that comes here feels that way. And I'm sure there are gonna be newbies that are conservatives that might be turned off when they see a political thread with so much negative energy (ranting, hating and bashing) in the middle of all things jazzfest (loving, good people, good friends and beautiful music). I would think we want to encourage as many people as possible to come to jazzfest and get involved with getting New Orleans back on her feet again.

I disagree completely. You can be liberal, conservative, jewish, catholic, white or black here, it doesn't matter. You can have an opinion and should feel free to express it. If the topic is not of interest then you leave it alone and it falls off the board. If it is of interest, it has a life. I don't think that anyone should dictate what others can post or not. Unless of course you are Wondering, and it is blatantly offensive.

Since K****a, National Politics and New Orleans are intertwined in a manner unprecedented, so we should expect it to overflow here. And jokes that ridicule former President Clinton over the stale Monica Lewinsky affair, which show up from time to time, can be viewed as negative as any topical comment about Bush.
That said...Before things get out of hand,I really feel that this new bored should be organized in a manner that would make easier for newbies to get to the meat of Jazz Fest info and fun and keep these types of threads in perspective.
This forum is subtitled "The Food, The Music, The Crafts, The Secondlines, The Magic. This is the place to talk all things "Jazz Fest!". I'm guilty of forgetting that myself...but I am going to re-remember it from this post onward.
Finally, I'm going to suggest that another top-level forum named "Welcome to the Threadhead Bar" or something similar be created and maybe off-topic threads like this could be moved to it. We can then resume this discussion at the far end of the bar...away from all those happy people just celebrating life at the tables near the front door.

I may be wrong, but I think we have a respectful group here and we can agree to disagree. The whole country is divided. Obviously, we are not all going to agree on this subject, but we can still be courteous to each and refrain from personal attacks...and I think so far, we have. I think if we continue that way, newbies will see it for what it is. Healthy debate.

After 14 straight years of a non-stop hate fest paid for and approved by the right wing,.. their hypocrisy and incompetence has finally been exposed 100%... So yeah,.. now,.. yeah "RIGHT" now,.. while our President is busy ignoring all the facts again (and the overwhelming majority of citizens),.. and is sending tens of thousands of exhausted soldiers back into the breach to face death,.. all for an insane policy (that has been insane from day ONE),.. yeah now is the time to forgive and forget,.. and to smoke the peace pipe..... When Junior drops his "I'm sticking to my "guns" all the way, even if it's only me and my dog who believe." then,.. maybe the pipe can be brought out...
Callin' for absolute censorship in regards to this thread is beyond my understanding....All adults here, if you don't care to read this thread, please simply ignore... Hundreds of other threads that celebrate the unsurpassed joy that Jazz fest brings.... There have been plenty of threads that expose the political side,.. and some that even expose the stalker like qualities of a few t-heads :),.. nothing at all wrong about a little righteous anger being tossed the way of the man who stood in Jackson Square and PROMISED a never ending effort to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast (USUALLY has start before it can end).. Ending a ridiculous "POLITICAL" policy that costs tax payers billions per day might leven lead to that "promise" of help for the city we all love....

I feel sort of badly that starting this thread was my first post. And I will even concede that ending it by calling the president a dick may have been uncalled for. But I was writing in my post-SOTU rage. In fact, I was so angry that I went through the entire registration process.
I'm not blaming everything on Bush. All I'm saying is he could've included a sentence on Katrina. A word. Something. Throw us a bone here. It's just staggering that such an event could recede so quickly from the public consciousness. As if it's been deleted from the nation's history. Absolutely amazing to me.
I don't even feel it's a matter of politics. The State of the Union is supposed to address the state of the union. A major city in the union has an enormous problem, and it was not even mentioned. Republican or Democrat, to ignore this is simply illogical and mind-blowing.
I assure you that the next post I start, on suggestions for smuggling an eighth of weed past airport security, will be far less controversial.

I agree. Even though he has given over $120 billion to the Gulf Coast, I do believe he needs to give us more attention. Maybe he feels the money is more useful than lip service. His inability to show that he cares the way we would like him to is a quality that he does need to work on.

Ultimately, in my opinion, all (99%) politicians have the same priority, themselves. Most of them stick a finger up in the air (both libs and cons) and conform to whatever group will get them (re)elected. The game is to demonize the others party in public and make deals in private. They are all basically playing us like a violin. Whoops, that sounds cynical. Neo-cons and Extreme Liberals might just be different sides of the same coin, really.
Ultimately, what matters in my opinion, is how we serve each other, how we take responsibility for all people around us: our families, our people, our neighborhoods, and most importantly to those who are strangers to us.

I have to agree with PC here ... beautiful LostCajun. Ultimately in every trying time time in our nations history, its our own people, that do the most for our own people ($ Donations, Habitat for Humanity, The Continued efforts of beautiful dedicated souls found all over this bored in different shapes and forms) ... The most help always comes from the citizenry and the corporate sectors (despite the lefts vile hate for big corporations)
Take for example the Tsunami in Asia 2 years ago, We were ridiculed for the ammount our Govt contributed, yet when the corporate donations started flooding in, the US's total contributions exceded the rest of the world combined.
Have faith in humanity ... less so in Government.
You'll live longer if your blood isnt boiling ... I can understand the frustration, but come on people!

I understand being pissed off at any politician. I have been so angry over the years both at people I supported and those I would never vote for.
Ultimately, I have found, the anger has gotten me no where. The more angry I allow myself to become, the more that negative vibe takes over other parts of me. And the more that anger puts burdens on relationships with people who might like the person I hate, or hate the person I sorta like. So I choose to find a way to beat the anger by caring for the people, especially with those whom I might disagree the most. I want to live full of care, rather than being careless or anger-filled. I still vote. I still write letters. I still have respectful discussion with folks, but avoid arguments that might lead me to miss the value of a person (yikes, even if that person is a politician!?!???)
And I think this is part of the passion for Jazzfest. Ultimately, it's about the diversity of people, culture and music that we deeply love and strive to protect.

Ending the debate is exactly what has gotten us in this mess in the first place. Our ability and right to debate as Americans is something even this Administration can't get rid of. You can pretty much take the liberal and conservative parts of that statement and flip flop them, It just depends which side you associate with
someones wise mama once said "dont discuss religion and politics, because youre never gonna change anyones mind"
And arguing about it online ... thats a whole other can of worms .... reminds me of another good quote I heard once upon a time. "Its like jerking off a baseball bat, you can beat it to death for hours and hours, but nothings ever gonna come out of it"

"Its like jerking off a baseball bat, you can beat it to death for hours and hours, but nothings ever gonna come out of it"
LMAO! Good one, dank.

Oh they are welcome. They're just not needed.
Just teasing!

I think the debate should continue! There is value in discussion, even heated discussion. I do think "debating" is different that "ranting." I think the value gets real thin when conservatives piss all over Clinton or Carter, and when liberals piss all over Reagan and Bush. I think discussing or debating ideas is really more constructive burning the politician at the stake, verbally. What is the value, or the destructiveness of this or that policy? etc.
Of course, there is an emotional pay off to ranting, but ultimately that payoff only serves the self and not others.
OKAY, nough of dat.

I think the debate should continue! There is value in discussion, even heated discussion. I do think "debating" is different that "ranting."
Is the following worthy of debate,.. or am I ranting??..
Cold hard fact: The right wing conducted an 8 year witch hunt (all at the expense of actual governing) to burn Bill Clinton,.. first they went about in an effort to uncover the "truth" behind a small real estate deal (years removed) in Arkansas.. After years and all too many millions they find nothing,.. but thanlks to some well connected "enimies of Bill" they were able to uncover some evidence of something the whole country already knew,.. shockingly they found proof that Bill was a ladies man and he commited yet another sin of the flesh.. Yes,.. our President did that which untold numbers of men do every day (cheating on their spouse) and then he lied about it (as guilty spouses tend to do),.. by the way, millions of woman are said to regularly participate in this very same activity...
So,.. as in the first,.. devoted husband he was not,.. de vote he got anywho :D ... We all knew,.. he still won dat vote and dis vote,.. but a deep seated hatred unlike any I have ever witnessed before kept coming from the side that claims morality as their own (thanks to 24 hr a day right wing radio attack dogs)... Average Republicans shocked me repeatedly with their incredulous hatred of the man,.. which they were so quick to express in casual conversation... This despite most of the world loving and respecting the guy... (He still carries himself ten times better at home and on the world stage than the current dud(e).. More on this later...)
Fast forward: Bush is annointed two times,.. first he is immediately backed by all the big right wing money,. which resulted in a less than half hearted primary (Showing his true colors,.. his team sunk to awful depths as they went about destroying the hopes of John McCain).. Then he was annointed a second time (after actually losing the general Presidential election in 2000).. He may or may not have won the electoral college as there were strong indications of voter manipulation in Ohio and Florida (save me the John Kennedy Chicago stuff,.. Kennedy didn't run standing on Gods coat tail)... Truth be told,.. Bush won an overwhelming majority in the "bible belt" on those very same coat tails... as he parlayed an often spoken of but rarely if ever evidence moral superiority..
In the first week of "TAKING" office Bush set out to undo decades worth of good work by dismanteling evironmental regulations at warp speeed.. After such "hard work" he rested, taking more weeks of vacation than any sitting President... In the meantime his crack (POT) international experts were busy ignoring Osma despite strong warnings that something was brewing... That something took place...
In the immediate aftermath of 9/11 Bush actually appeared Presidential (first and last time) and later he ordered us into Afghanistan,.. and that WAS the right thing to do... Then he got stupid and he has NEVER let up.. Putting on his best John Wayne act he preceded to do and say ridiculous things all leading up to his desire to attack a country that never once attacked us... His non-stop cocky actions (giving a back rub to the German leader was way cool) and wild religious statements about God approving of our right to wage (an unjust) war has destroyed years of U.S. goodwill throughout the world. In the last 3+ years he has preceded to do and say the most outrageous things ("good job Brownie") and has spent our children (conservatives?) into a debt that China may hold over our heads for genrations yet to come...
I'm tired and the last episode of Top Cheif is on... My whining made me thirsty... Merlot it is....

Moomoo! That behemoth rant was your most impressive yet. I think you may have outdone yourself with that one. I'd be tired, too; Lord knows I got tired just reading that rhetoric for the millionth time. lol, who are you trying to convince? ;)
I love to see statements that start off with "COLD, HARD FACT". That's usually a good indication that it's not. And I laugh and laugh whenever I see the word Neocon thrown around or even it's evil cousin, the Nazi liberal. That's another favorite of mine. Here's a little history for the term, Neocon:
"The original neocons were a band of liberal intellectuals who rebelled against the Democratic Party's leftward drift on defense issues in the 1970s. At first the neocons clustered around Sen. Henry "Scoop" Jackson, a Democrat, but then they aligned themselves with Ronald Reagan and the Republicans, who promised to confront Soviet expansionism. Irving Kristol remarked that a neoconservative is a "liberal mugged by reality," one who became more conservative after seeing the results of liberal policies.
Neoconservatives are less skeptical of government than other conservatives. They are less worried about reducing the size of government, less enthusiastic about tax cuts, more concerned about forging national crusades that can tap either the American public's patriotism or its desire for reform.
They are mostly ex-liberals, by and large out of the intellectual community. These are people who came to the realization that modern liberalism was not the kind of liberalism that they had subscribed to. They moved toward the right and kept on going."

Ultimately, what matters in my opinion, is how we serve each other, how we take responsibility for all people around us: our families, our people, our neighborhoods, and most importantly to those who are strangers to us.
Nicely done Lostcajun!
Um, Dank.... I'm sure all appreciated the US dollars after the tsunami but remember ya just about got more people than the rest of the developed world combined!
Crazy Alice... good luck and enjoy!
I think Chrisjoseph was just asking a question. This is a whole new world for us and Chris is prolly just trying to figure out where OUR boundaries are on the new able to delete bored. It's a tough job and he's doing it.
In case I'm the only one who hasn't figured out the ignore thingo... excellent restraint Wondering.
O.K. I'm done. Now where's my prize for sticking to my 'New Bored Resolution' and not buying into a political debate without knowing enough about the politics.

Who could have ever guessed people of conscience could go that far right...
Bottom line a bunch of hypocrites (with politics in mind,.. not morality) spent 8 years attackin' the President (Clinton) instead of governin' and then when they got the power they so graved (with the help of big dirty money and little dirty tricksters) they spent the next 6 years spendin' (while givin' the first tax break in the history of the country during a time of war) and destroyin' the good name of America throughout much of the world... Bush and his bunch were/are arrogant fools,.. and our children (yours too) will pay for their many mistakes for their entire lives....
Clinton got a few,.. but Bush screwed us all..................

I have immensely enjoyed each and every fest day I have been fortunate enough to be a part of,.. and I am 100% positive that I will immensely enjoy this years version... Now,.. as for "happy days" that the whole world can enjoy,.. those will certainly begin to accelerate greatly a little more than two years from now....... Whether Republican or Democrat take the highest office next,.. things can only improve from the incompetent immoral bunch that have failed miserably to lead for the last six years..... You (and a few others) want a real laugh,.. browse over any comment previously made by Boy blunder when he first ran for the office and he identified himself as a "great uniter",.. the education President,.. and 100% against Nation building"... And the actions of all those crooks that claimed something about "a higher morality" might provide you with a chuckle or two......

You know I respect your view of your president :p but I am tellin' ya-the money he has poured into Iraq alone has not only tilted the odds against the Gulf Coast's getting money-it has messed up a whole lot of programs that help out the entire nation. Money went to Lebanon recently for rebuilding quicker than it did to the Gulf post-K.
We (meaning our government) seem to want to be all high and mighty to help rid the world of the f*#kheads that they can't get rid of themselves (In interest of fairness, Clinton did some of it, too-he just realized that it was a futile effort).
I gotta tell you, it really hits home to go to a funeral of a 24 year old kid who was trying to do the right thing by serving his country on the pretense of our freedom, when it is actually the freedom of someone else. Just my humble opinion.
But as I always seem to quote: "when the followers lead, the leaders will follow" so it is ultimately up to us. So I would like to use this forum to announce my candidacy for President in 2008-has a nice ring to it doncha think? President Gumbo. Vote for Gumbo in '08. /finally get to use that damn poly sci diploma for something other than a coaster/

My day really doesn't need brightening,.. OUR President does....;)
It absolutely amazes me that there are people (you obviously being one ) that can still stomach the guy (i.e. fool me once)... I really don't hate him at all (unlike the real and non-stop hate that was directed at Clinton),.. I just hate that we as a country have allowed this incompetent dolt to hold the highest office in the world (and the saddest part is he doesn't know where 3/4's of the world is located).....:D
