WWOZ just ran a five minute story on the Threadheads and the making of John's CD....John, Paul, Shamarr and our very own Nate were interviewed....GREAT story....it will be replayed for the next six days, and should be available as a sound file on their website.
CONGRATS to all the Threadheads!!!!!!!!

However, they haven't posted the Threadhead story just yet. I'm hoping it will be up in the next 24 hours or so.

The Street Talk segment actually runs on the air only once a day (I think; someone correct me if I'm wrong about that). However, as I said earlier, hopefully they will post the audio file on their website, and soon.

Quote from 'oz's e-newsletter today:
NEXT WEEK: Street Talk reporter David Weinberg introduces us to the Threadheads. They met as Jazz Fest enthusiasts and now they are music activists, helping sweet sounds swing in a variety of ways.

Tell me about it. We first came here last year just to ask a question about the Wednesday in the park concerts.
Got an answer, and decided to ask a few more about JF itself. Now here I sit at over 500 posts; buying raffle tickets, buying tshirts, contributing to raffles, donating instruments, producing CDs;), joining food and booze communes.
Won't you freakin leave me alone???? :D

Just heard the WWOZ Street Talk segment. Excellent. Caught my attention right away with the lead-in of John Boutte's intro to "City of New Orleans" recorded at the Patry: "Good Morning Threadheads how are you..." I was thinking, "Hey, I've heard that before." Very nice piece.

I think a business card to hand out would be helpful in spreading the gospel. I was asked a number of times "who are the Threadheads". If its a guy, I tell them we are full of our guy quota. But, for the females, it would be helpful to hand a card with the relevant websites and a small description/mission statement. Its hard to explain sometimes, esp during a set.

Can anyone possibly hand out flyers/cards at Crawfish Fest in a couple of weeks to test what kind of response we get from attendees in our demographic? Might give us some idea whether this Threadhead Records idea works better in the "real" or "virtual" world. I have a hunch it works in both, but it might be an interesting check.

Caught the second half (I think) of the wwoz report... So cool. Can't wait til they get it on the website so I can send my friends there to hear it. I liked hearing the sounds of the patry in the background during the interview. And I had forgotten that John sang City of New Orleans at the patry. Sweet.

Well this is a big idea...it would be exciting! I'll take a shot in the dark based on the audience numbers and the advertising value (as compared to the sponsorships I manage) and say $50,000 to $75,000 annually. Maybe less if NOJHF took into consideration our "unofficial" charitable status. I've been wondering why there isn't a sponsor for that stage -- does anyone know?
I don't want to be a wet blankie, but aside from the significant investment that would be required, a couple of things jumped into my mind from my 9 to 5existence that might come into play if this idea is being seriously considered.
Most sponsorships are not year to year, the sponsee (the organization owning the asset, in this case NOJHF) typically wants to contract funding for three to five years. How would we feel about contracts? Long-term obligation to raise funds for this each year?
I have not heard of a sponsor having a say in the artistic choices at an entertainment venue. As an example, Sum 41 played at our TELUS Stage at a large exhibition in Edmonton -- and the next day I had to field over 100 complaints about language and behaviour. A new talent buyer decided to take the booking of this venue in an edgier direction. We did not have sign-off on the talent in our contract and it required a lot of time and influence for us to be informed in advance the following year. So if one of the things we would want from a sponsorship is to have artists we support in that stage's lineup, that might not something we have the rights to. Over time the artistic direction can change so that the lineup you see at that stage now might not be what furthers our mandate in three to five years.
For me, the thing to consider when I blue-sky about something like this is to always keep in mind what I want to achieve. If we had $50K or more next year would we accomplish more of what we want to achieve by investing in local artists' recordings ...or promoting Threadhead activities and activism....or support established non-profits doing work in New Orleans to support music. Or do a little of everything? That's some of the thinking I employ when considering sponsorship buys.
Almost every sponsorship proposal I review makes the point that they help my company promote our products, services or further our corporate reputation. In some way, all sponsorships definitely do that...but some are a better fit than others. Sometimes, I am better off to buy advertising and promotion that I control than be locked into a three to five year contracted sponsorship that's not a good fit.
Would love to hear the Threadhead nation's perspective on this -- also would be interesting to see what NOJHF would say if we approached them.
OMG, heavy thinking for a lazy Saturday afternoon. Back to sun and fun....;)

I generally use internet forums like this as a time killer at work when I'm running some long process or idle in some other way. I think I should be paying a little more attention here, clearly I'm missing out on some pretty cool stuff.

(Like anywhere outside the city limits.) I want to take her for a cruise over the causeway to Mandeville, something everybody should do at least once. Twice if you want to get back.

I'm hanging out, reading up on stuff I wasn't paying attention to before and digging it all very much. Kinda bummed that I'll be missing Crawfishfest though, would have been a great chance to meet some folks. We had a great time last year, but it looks as if the hoopla attendant to Hope's (the GF mentioned earlier) daughter's high school graduation will prevent us from attending this year. Ya'll have fun up there in Joisey...
