Post jazz fest - The Nevilles are back, Dr. John is out there somewhere, Fats is still around, Galactic what would you consider to be the biggest musical export from New Orleans right now?

Depends on what you mean by "biggest" -- biggest influence, biggest fan numbers, etc.
Might be someone like Mystikal.

In terms of CURRENT economic impact, Galactic, BeauSoleil and the Rads must do the most business out of town. Marcia Ball also if you count her as Nawlins. The Iguanas were up there, but seem to play out and about less since the loss of Derek Houston. Troy Andrews is the bigger up and coming tour out of town person. He could be a national/international star.
The person who should be the entertainer extraordanier is Kermit Ruffins. He must be happy with being big in town and not chasing the dream outside of NOLA (Which is fine if it fits his life choices).

The Nevilles have to be up there. They're booked solidly until well into 2009, and they're definitely getting some big cake for those casino gigs. Factor in the Aaron franchise, and they're probably near the top.

we would love to export her out of California.

For my money, it's either Trombone Shorty, PBS, Papa Grows Funk, or Bonerama.
I wish it were something like Fats (love dat old-school RnB), but the qualifier is: today.
Naw, I think saturn's got it right. Although it's not what we listen to, I'll bet the number one is either Mystikal, or Juvenile.
And please, Rosie: the Spears clan is from Kentwood, which is NOT New Orleans!

You have the Marsalis brothers too. When did the heydays of the Nevilles end as the major musical nawlins export?

They haven't -- just passed to a new generation. It looks like two of the hottest "festival" bands this summer are the Funky Meters and Dumpstaphunk, featuring Ian and/or Ivan.

Bonerama is touring everywhere and getting larger venues. Looking forward to seeing them here, 4th of July at FitzGerald's American Music Festival, along with John Boutte, Marcia Ball, Paul Sanchez, Lee Boys.

Sorry but some of my kids friends are into Lil Wayne and this guy is hot, sells tons of cd, performs to sold out crowds. New Orleans rapper and this kid is big time in that scene

Nevilles have to be up there based on the price per show. Tim McGraw, while not New Orleans, is a LA guy and he seems to be doing ok for himself...

Nice lineup for you in Chitown glinda. Unfortunately, I would not count on Paul Sanchez being there. Can always hope though.

Well, seems like this guy has managed to cross over to that level where people are not begging him to play Iko Iko or St. James Infirmary. Not my cup of tea but very nice to see that it is possible for N.O. artists to have commercial success that is not built on second line. Or, maybe this guy does second line too!

Yes, but not from New Orleans....:p :p :D
No one has mentioned HC jr...... some people (not naming names) think he's all that and a bag of chips!

My thoughts were currently Harry Connick and Wynton and Branford Marsalis. But, Shaq changed the lane in the NBA and neither of those others so much as even redifined the charge/block rule.

I agree that the NOLA rappers are definitely big time out there but I am not sure many of the people from around the country notice them for the connection to NOLA as they do for their rap, even though they rap about NOLA.
I think as far as bands that promote NOLA, there are several and all do well based on the shows I have seen outside of NOLA. They are, in no particular order, Dumpstafunk, Bonerama, Papa Grows Funk and the one I would add is Cowboy Mouth-despite all the band changes I see them in my area at least twice a year (once in late winter early spring and again in the fall) and Fred is all about mentioning New Orleans

I agree... they definitely play the most shows in California. Also add PBS & the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Yes. Do any of them still live in NO? Irvin, maybe.
I wish Irvin still played with Los Hombres Calientes. Miss them.

Me too, they were so good. At least Bill Summers is still out there. Is there still some incarnation of LHC that's playing?

I remember the thrill of the first CD with Los Hombres Calientes. Bill Summers is way into the cuban folklore and religion with the Batá drums and the Rumba.
What about Jason Marsalis - what is he up to these days?

Upon returning home i read that Lil Wayne was named by Rolling Stone as the best MC of 2008 with a 2 page spread and additional page for the rest of the article. Sounds like he's the hot S$!t in the rap world these days. He talks about being from being from NOLA and scrubbing the spray paint off the side of one of his record company's founders homes after the "thing". I bet he'll stroll into the patry one of these days drawn by the scent of brownies.....
