Odadaa!
this past weekend, albany had it's annual tulip festival and on sunday i went to check out delfeayo marsalis and his band, including jason marsalis on drums. well, about half way through the set they brought out Yacub Addy who is the founder of Odadaa! and who lives just outside of albany. it was fantastic! he added some nice, subtle accents to the compositions and then he and jason took a collaborative solo. i have heard of Odadaa! before but had never seen a performance so this was quite the unexpected treat :)
so anyway, after reading up i just came to find out that he and wynton did a project together and played a show in Congo Square in spring of 2006. they also released it as a double disc. think i know what my next cd purchase will be. anyone on the board attend this show or know if Odadaa! has played Jazzfest before? this would seem to be a perfect fit.

hi. you know, we almost made it to bullet's but did not. we had planned on it but got caught up over at HOB where my friend works, then ran into other folks and had drinks at ryan's. so it was a few hours after i landed that i actually got to my friends place to clean up and head out for the evening. it just didn't pan out.

Yep, was there for Dragon Smoke and also thought it rocked as usual. By 2:00 a.m. I was approaching 14 hours straight on my feet for live music, and was wishing I had it in me for New Mastersounds with Karl Denson, but it was not to be as I had a morning flight home on Wednesday. I did manage to cactch a bit of Treme at Ray's, the awesome brass band of high school kids on the corner, and a bit of Jeremy Lyons at Dragon's Den in between the set break. Also tried to catch Kirk Joseph at Balcony Music Club but it was closed. Still don't know what was up with that.

OK, i'm going to answer my own question....Odadaa! first played Fest in '85. bring 'em back! :)

I would add that, as great as it would be to have Levon at Fest as I have requested repeatedly, folks are really missing the boat if they do not make the trek to Levon's home in Woodstock to see a Midnight Ramble. I have seen hundreds and hundreds of shows by countless performers in various settings over the past 25+ years, and, except for the patry, nothing has come close to the experience of attending a Ramble at Levon's barn. He is one of the last of a dying breed of musicians from a vital time in the history of the music that I love. I have been to three Rambles at his barn (so far) and I am certain that when he's done performing I will only regret that I did not make it to even more, because there are no other opportunities of which I am aware to see (and meet) a legend in such an intimate, conducive setting. I will rue the day when I can't go there anymore. The only thing I can compare it to is Jerry's death, since which I still get frequent pangs of sadness knowing that I can't go to that wonderful place that was a Dead or Jerry show anymore.

Can see Buddy Guy up here easily at his club.
I see a lot of people responding with artists hwo have played Jazz Fest in the past few years. I think personaly, I'm thinking of someone who A) hasn't played or hasn't played in a long time, and B) I can't see easily locally. Hence my skipping the legendary Mavis Staples.

Though Bill Withers hasn't officially played since 1988, it isn't out of the question. He was going to play at an event where he was honored last month (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/04/bill_withers_refuses_to_sing.html) it didn't happen but I I found this recent pic of him floating around out there, it gives me serious hope:

Not used to my dry humor? After all the time we spent together at the Patry with our second row seats we got from that guy on Ebay!
BTW, I know ALL about Hannah Montana. She's like a 3rd daughter to me, except for the posing for pictures with her part.

How I remember the last time Winwood played JF. There was a small crowd of us fools (maybe 5,000 at Acura) as the "weather" was moving in. Winwood kept looking as the black clouds were moving in and kept playing.
Priceless..............

It really had more to do with seeing people we couldn't see elsewhere vs. somebody who we could see at home. Especially for it being our first Fest. It was all about Louisiana music. Although, Winwood is not on tour very often and I would LOVE to see him.

also, while I think they are about to start focusing on side projects, i think the greyboy allstars deserve a fairgrounds set...
this is a tough one for me, cause i got THREE out of the four BNA that i wished for last year (stevie, santana, al green).
i know he is coming off some kinda surgery, but prince would sooooo dope. i am with whoever said it earlier tho - i go for a lot of the local stuff, so as long as treme, rebirth, hot8, newbirth, the rads, dr. john, bonerama, etc, etc are there, i will be juuuuuuust fine!

Was surfing the tube last night and they had him in concert on one of the channels. I have much more respect for him now at 68 then I did some 40 years ago. No Delta. I've been here just a year. I arrived 5/3 of last year, and made it to Jazz Fest for something like 3 hours on the last day!!!!! I have an Americanized British accent, but am totally Irish. I spent 22 years in Richmond, Virginia. It's been tough settling in here. Bay Saint Louis and Waveland I think have had a particularly rough time with the rebuilding effort. A long way to go still!!

They have had a very rough go of it. We were down there about 2 weeks after the storm and there were still cars hanging in the trees on 603. I have a picture of one of the old cabins on the Jourdan propped up against a telephone pole too. It didn't so much as break the railing around the porch, but it's at a 45 degree angle supported by the pole. My grandmother was raised in what is now known as the Stone House on Kiln-Delisle rd. The Bay lost so much more than just property too. All the history of their art district is gone, although last time I was down there the Mardi Gras tree was still standing.

On Washington st. As you're going towards the beach it's on the left about a block north of the.....ummmm....started to say the antique store that used to be there on the right, but that's no help to you! Maybe 4-5 blocks north of Beach blvd on the left. I'm pretty sure it's an oak and the top branches are covered in old MG beads and faded silk roses.

No argument from me on that. I've always loved that area and get down around Columbia fairly often.

Tom Jones is at the HoB at the end of the month!!!!! I may go, but don't think I'm brave enough for the grannies!!
I heard Tom Jones hit the Apple Barrell on Frenchmen Street, the night before his H.O.B. show, AND....he performed !!! Sang his heart out and even played some guitar. Now that would have been a fun night out, in the tiny confines of The Apple Barrell. Yes, It Is Unusual...
I would love to see Willy Deville. I don't understood why he never played Jazzfest when he lived in New Orleans.

I think there is a good chance John Scofield will be playing next year. He has recorded a cd with Jon Cleary, George Porter and Ricky Fataar and will tour with them in November & December in Europe and the US sometime in the spring of 2009. I can't imagine them not playing Jazzfest.

BRIAN DONOHOE: saxophone, effects

BILL LAURANCE: keyboards

Didn't know he was playing flugelhorn too. His dad owned the record store I worked in back in HS/College. I've talked music to him and told him he needed to do NO/'Fest. Sent him a Marcia Ball CD one time tryin' to round him out from the hard core contemporary jazz. (don't think it worked from what I've heard.)

Nope. Where in TX are they from?
Hailing from the unassuming Texas town that produced Roy Orbison, The Eagles, and Blood, Sweat, & Tears, Snarky Puppy is spreading its infectious blend of original jazz/funk/world fusion to an audience hungry for soulful, inspired music.
Made up entirely of past and present music students and adjunct faculty from the highly esteemed University of North Texas (affectionately referred to as "the Juilliard of the South"), the band effortlessly blends a strong sense of musicality and virtuosity with raw, organic musical instincts. The 9-piece group is doing something very relevant, and something very honest- they're making music as part of a generation immersed in diversity. Bjork, Dave Holland, D'Angelo, Wayne Krantz, Pat Metheny, and Radiohead resonate within the compositions to form the unified, unique, soulful sound that is unmistakably Snarky Puppy

OK, I was bored... and thanks to Swag's grid rescue project, I was able to build a matrix of likely suspects. Discounting regional artists, perennial performers (usually reg. artists), deceased artists, defunct bands, and no-longer-relevant artists (subjective on my part), it boiled down to approx 175 "big name acts". There does seem to be a curious benefit to buying a house and becoming a resident of New Orleans, or doing a lot of recording there, or having a prominent and beloved NOLA musician featured in your band, but I'll let others judge nepotism for themselves - hey, if it helps get you the gig - it's fair!
Based on performance year trend, or frequency interval, you could expect repeat performances soon by:
Allmans Bro's
Blues Traveler
Ani DiFranco
Fats Domino
Bob Dylan
Buddy Guy
Etta James
BB King
Little Feat
Los Lobos
Dave Matthews
John Mayer
North Miss. Allstars
Bonnie Raitt
Paul Simon
Joss Stone
James Taylor
Steve Winwood
Yerba Buena
Artists that seem due for another appearance after an absence:
Willie Nelson
Maceo Parker
Roomful of Blues (w/ Duke Robillard?)
Johnny Winter
Blind Boys of Alabama
Wynton Marsalis
Lucinda Williams
NRBQ
Artists that do shows during Jazzfest but haven't been at the fairgrounds lately:
Karl Denson's Tiny Universe
Gov't Mule
Can't believe they never played before (at least in the post-'84 era):
Joe Ely
Medeski, Martin & Wood
John Scofield
Police
(then again... REO Speedwagon never played either - best not to tempt fate!)

sometimes it was more shocking to see that an artist, or group, only played once than realizing that one of my fav's hadn't played at all...
I'd attach my excel worksheet, but it seems I don't have that capability - or am I being blocked at my end?

Well, from the way overdue for a return department, the top of the list has to be Aretha Franklin. After all, she's the greatest singer of all time (http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/showthread.php?t=7782), she's touring again, and hasn't played Fest since 1994.
