Forgive me if this has been posted already. Does anyone else care about the fact that the food booths have done away with the small sizes? I try to get to as many different booths as possible each day. The small sizes were great obviously, because you can have more variety. Also, I have a 6 year old son who loves Red Beans, Gumbo, etc. The small sizes were perfect for him. Ultimately, I think I spent more money when smaller portions were available. I asked some of the vendors about this and was told that the decision was not theirs, that it came from "higher up". Any comments?

Personally, I didn't even notice. I'm the other kind of JF eater. I want my favorites; the bigger, the better. But I can certainly understand that small sizes would be perfect for variety tasters and kids. As with most things, it's a shame they can't offer both.

We've always gotten the larger sizes and shared, but I can understand how the smaller sizes would be preferrable for single festers or kids. I didn't even notice either.

I honestly don't know what you mean. The food booths that I went to had 2 sizes for most items.

In the grand scheme of things, I guess it's not that big of a deal. It's one of those little things that changes and many don't even notice. Small sizes have been around for as long as I've been attending the fest (20 plus years). In the case of Crawfish Monica, the single size offered this year was very small relative to past years. It was like last year's small (or smaller) for the price of a large. Economics will always drive decisions like this and I understand that ultimately, prices will increase. Although I'm not an expert, I'm not convinced that doing away with the small sizes will increase revenue. Giving people less for their money will. In this day and age of unprecedented price gouging everywhere we turn, it's hard not to be suspicious...

I agree with you on the Monica. Smaller size and for me not as good as years before. Less crawfish, so I never made it back for more. But, the gumbo was great as always and had several bowls over the 7 days of fest.
Seems to me that the Crawfish Monica folks did the opposite in both respects: they eliminated the large-sized portions, and they now charge the large price for the small portion. BTW, it was not nearly as good as I remembered imo this year. I had it only once, on the first day, and never again.

In response to Bluesgirl...
Several vendors confirmed that it was not their decision to eliminate the small sizes. That it was a "Jazzfest" decision. Of course, the information I was given could have been false, but this is what I was told. Here are some examples of items that were offered in 2 sizes prior to this year: Pheasant, quail and andouille gumbo, red beans and rice, Crawfish Monica, seafood gumbo, Chicken and Tasso, crawfish/sausage bread. I could list more, but I think this makes my point.

You're exactly right, Lit! That is indeed what they did and I kvetched at them about it last year and this one too . . . and I too only got the one bowl during both weekends this year. They also did away with the large size Cochon de Lait . . . grrrrr.

Some people will beoytch about everything. It's Jazz Fest, for pete's sake. Don't like the food or the sizes offered at a particular booth? Move on to the next one. It's not like you're gonna go hungry. If it's really that much of a botherment, let the Jazz Fest food committee know.

I never saw a massive line at Crawfish Monica like in previous years where the line stayed pretty full (as far as I saw) all of the time.
Really, we should all write polite, non-judgmental letters to the JF committee about what we didn't like and what could be improved.

Bluesgirl, Please don't mistake my comments as whining or complaining. I'm just pointing out something that has been the same for over 20 years has changed. I was interested to see if others had noticed and what they thought about it. As I stated in an earlier post, ultimately it's not that big of a deal (although I will admit that my personal preference would be to keep the small sizes, especially for the kids).

C'mon darlin, I have seen threads in the last month or so, related to everything from shoes, sunscreen, to you finding ' a cutie pie of proper dating age'. Size of food portions seems as relevant as anything. I also enjoyed the smaller sizes at the smaller prices:)

Seems like the choice of sizes disappeared a few years ago. It was nice having a choice, but it probably simplifies things for the vendors only having one size.
Bluesgirl...which booths still have two different sizes? I don't remember seeing a single one (except for the beverages).

I didn't interpret his comments as bitching at all. We discuss everything under the sun on this bored and I think he has a valid point. I walked by just about all of the booths and don't recall seeing more than 1 size.

some of the combo's have a smaller serving than if you ordered it separately,
the seafood caserole, spinach artichoke, sweet tater pone combo being an example. the combo's used to be a good deal, but at most of the stands you no longer save $ by ordering them.
in general, i thought the servings sizes were smaller, which explained why the prices did not seem to rise. food costs are thru the roof.
but even with rising costs, i think the prices for tix, food & drink at jazzfest have risen much faster than inflation. its not the bargain it used. its fast approaching amusement park / major sports stadium prices.
its all economics. the price will rise as long as there is the demand.
starting January 1st, i am only posting negative things to try to discourange people from attending.

didn't the crawfish monica cost $8 for a "large" and $5 for the "small" back when they offered 2 sizes? and didn't gas cost under $2/gallon way back when...? and we all complained about that too.
fact is, the small monica could be $10, a fest ticket $75 and gas $5/gallon ...i'm still gonna eat, go to jazz fest, drive my car, and enjoy life :)

I don't think that s/he or anyone else is suggesting that the removal of the small sizes is going to make them stop eating, stop attending Jazz Fest or stop enjoying life. It was simply an observation, and as many have pointed out, there have been hundreds of threads on this bored addressing many similar issues (e.g., relating to the increased costs of attending Fest, and the concomitant "whitening" of the Fest; the corporate sponsorship; the focus on BNAs; the sh!tty beer selection; etc., etc.). I don't know why this poster is being singled out for this observation.
And FWIW, I could be wrong (it has happened before), but I think that when the Monica booth had two sizes, the prices were either $5.00 or $6.00 tops for a large, and $3.00 for a small. I don't ever recall there being an $8.00 portion.
Well, the Monica might have been 3/5 or 4/6 when they had 2 sizes, but if they still had 2 sizes, it would likely be 5/8 now.
It seems to me the choice of sizes started to go away after Katrina. Not sure of any cause there?
Where I missed a small size this year was the new duck po boy. It was pricey, at $8, and way too big, filling me up for most of the afternoon. I'd have much rather had a half portion for $5.

I''m curious what the Fest's motivation might be for this change.

i don't feel as if i've singled anyone out. aren't all the observations posted on this board up for debate, discussion and just a little bit (sometimes a lot) of chop-busting? if not for the discussions, those "hundreds of threads on this bored [sic]" wouldn't be threads at all -just individual posts. "postheads" doesn't sound nearly as cool as "threadheads."
and unlike some posts, sirfuzzalot's specifically asked for our opinions, not just verification that his observation was accurate:

drdennis - thanks for your comments. In fact, thanks to everyone who posted. It was interesting to see how many people mentioned Crawfish Monica. They were the only vendor that seemed to be taking advantage of us by selling a small for the price of a large. It seemed as though most of the other vendor's portions were on par with what they were charging for a large portion in prior years. It will be interesting to see how many vendors go the route of the Crawfish Monica next year. I've got to think this decision was about money, although I'm not so sure it will really make a difference. It may help some vendors but will probably hurt others because people will fill up on their favorites and maybe skip that new thing they were going to try. This leads me to question if it's important to encourage distribution of spending among the vendors. Is this good for Jazz Fest? I'm sure there are quite a few people (not everyone, but a significant number) who go to jazz fest with a spending limit. They will spend the same amount whether it's on 2 items or 4. It always amazes me to see people lined up at one booth and no one in line at the next (even thought they are serving something equally delicious). I've often bragged that I never have to wait in line for food because no matter how crowded it is, there will always be a vendor serving up some tasty delicacy with no one in line at their booth. Time and time again, I've seen this to be true. As far as the small sizes go, I consider this to be a change that will not really impact the overall bottom line much, one way or the other. It will however, impact people like me and also the vendors who serve equally delicious but "less trendy" items. It will also impact children who are ready for something more than what's offered at the Kid's Area, but not ready for a big plate or sandwich. If small sizes weren't working, why didn't they figure it out 20+ years ago?

actually, my understanding is that this is exactly a case where [sic] is indicated, especially since my spelling of "board" used earlier in my post was of the conventional variety. then again, since we're on an informal discussion group and not a peer-reviewed publication, [sic] would never actually be necessary. from wikipedia:
Sic is a Latin word meaning "thus", "so", "as such", or "just as that". In writing, it is placed within square brackets and usually italicized to indicate that an incorrect or unusual spelling, phrase, punctuation, and/or other preceding quoted material has been reproduced verbatim from the quoted original and is not a transcription error.

the way i eat at jazz fest has evolved over the years. i was an impulse buyer, getting a bunch of small portions and eating until i was on the verge of gastric explosion. these days, i'm much more likely to share a large portion with the group i'm hanging with for the day. and this is after scoping out the food areas for any new and exciting offerings.
i imagine the culling of small sizes has to be a decision based largely on economics -although i'm not exactly sure who it benefits. one could argue that offering one size does means stocking only one kind of plate/bowl, and it makes accounting at the end of the day easier for some.

Not to get too "Adam Smith" here, but I think that the market will take care of it. As others noted, and as I also observed, the crowds were way down at the Crawfish Monica booth this year (at least on first weekend; I did not go second weekend this year) as compared with what I have observed there in prior years. Yet there were still long lines at peak times at the cochon de lait booth, for example. I believe this is a direct reaction to the perceived value and quality of the product being offered. In other words, Crawfish Monica was not as good of a value as it used to be, and/or the quality was not as good as it used to be. For me it was both. Others apparently agreed for one reason or another.
As for good values, I continue to be blown away by value that is the paneed chicken po' boy (from the same folks who do the fried oyster po' boy/spinach salad). $6.00 for a whole chicken breast with great spicy seasoning/coating on a nice piece of bread, lettuce and tomato (and perhaps some type of dressing; I don't remember because I nailed it with Frank's hot sauce too). I have lots and lots of favorites at the Fest that I still think are fair values, but that one stands out to me as a lot of good food for not a lot of money. Not quite as exotic as most of my Fest favorites, but a real good and dependable item. None of the folks in my krewe, which included several Fest vets, had ever had one, and when they saw and sampled mine they were all blown away by both the size and the quality as compared with many of the other offerings. The chicken and tasso over rice comes pretty close too imo.

It's hot in the Summer, but there are tons of little festivals. I like October. The best thing is to go to the Arkansas Blues and Heritage Festival (King Biscuit Festival) and take a few days on one side or the other.
Now back to your regularly scheduled topic: I miss the small sizes. That way I can try more different things. It costs more that way, but that's not the point. This year I went for more combo plates in order to do this.

There's pretty much something going on all through the summer, but the biggies seem to be in August and September. Delta Blues Festival in Greenville the second week in Sept, the BBKing museum opening in Indianola in Sept, Sunflower River Blues and Gospel in Clarksdale in Aug. We've already been to the Deep Delta in Rolling Fork and the Robert Johnson in Crystal Springs (nobody but me cares, but I got a picture of myself with RJ's son and stood about 2 feet from Honeyboy and Steve Bell last Saturday) and there is usually at least one small festival every weekend.
You can email roger@cathead.biz with the subject line of "put me on the list" and you'll get sporadic emails about upcoming festivals too. And he doesn't send a bunch of them, or any extraneous crap.
Between StaxSun and I, we can probably get you hooked up with something appropriate.
And don't overlook the North MS Hill Country Picnic 4th of July weekend in Potts Camp. Their line-up looks really good this year.

I agree that Sunflower's great if you can handle the midsummer heat. The picnic's great, but it's a little different than the rest of the community festivals. Like Delta says, lots of festivals all summer.

Yep. We'll be there Saturday for sure. Indianola is my old stompin' grounds so we'll probably make a pass through there on the way up and maybe check out Club Ebony Friday night. I heard somebody bought it finally so it didn't have to shut down.
Sunday looks to be real promising too, and I always enjoy the more relaxed jam session feel of those performances. I'm looking forward to Mississippi Slim and John Horton especially. Heard lots of good things about Eden Brent too.

We're hoping to be there Saturday. My buddy, Jef, was at Club Ebony Sunday night. Unfortunately, I didn't get the scoop as he rolled in late and I had to go to work at 5 AM.

actually, my understanding is that this is exactly a case where [sic] is indicated, especially since my spelling of "board" used earlier in my post was of the conventional variety. then again, since we're on an informal discussion group and not a peer-reviewed publication, [sic] would never actually be necessary. from wikipedia:
Sic is a Latin word meaning "thus", "so", "as such", or "just as that". In writing, it is placed within square brackets and usually italicized to indicate that an incorrect or unusual spelling, phrase, punctuation, and/or other preceding quoted material has been reproduced verbatim from the quoted original and is not a transcription error.
Oh, I understand the usage under traditional literary environs. I just meant that in this environment using "bored" would not be judged as incorrect or unusual. It has become an accepted and intentional practice and as such no one will judge you as having made a grammatical or spelling error through the usage of this "local" colloquialism.
Oh, and b00bs [sic]. :D

fair enough. although, clearly i'm not too afraid of being judged :D otherwise, i'd use the <shift> key a lot more often.

Talking about food is very high on my list of favorite pastimes.
re crawfish monica -- I thought is was a bit better this year than last year or the year before. We ate it daily pre-Katrina and then noticed that the crawfish to monica ratio was WAY down in 2006 -- totally understandable. It was still tasty, just not this same. This year we found it more to be what we remembered (large sizes of something good never offends me).
Maybe it's because we had to wait a few minutes for a new batch to be ready at the time we ordered. It was hot off the stove, full of crawfish, and quite delicious.
As to large vs small vs combo.... We did eat more combo plates this year with the meaty beans and ribs or turkey wing being my favorite -- love those beans! The pheasant and quail gumbo in a small size would only tease me into seconds and thirds. The bigger the better with that one.

lol, I didn't even finish reading that one! :p
btw, guess what? Chicklet just did geometry . . . in third grade! We didn't learn that stuff till we were in 10th grade. She just brought her homework to me and she had to label angles and she labeled them correctly right in front of me . . . with no help!
She totally confounds me sometimes.
You have a third grade girl too? Did you bring her to Fest? This was my first time bringing mine and they LOVED it.

I had the Crawfish Monica twice this year, really enjoyed it both times. Seems to me there were a lot of tail in it.
I'm fighting off the temptation to make some at home. I don't need all that butter and cream...
