Well, he didn't sing Ebony and Ivory. Also, Irma came out and sang a couple of songs...she didn't know she would be singing the second one, "Superstitious," and he had to feed her the words.

I would have loved to have seen him, we gifted our backstage passes to Rossvegas & Beadhead, can't wait to hear their reports. What'd he say, Chris?

Talked about his mom's passing (very emotional for me...my mom passed away in January); he asked for a moment of silence for Katrina victims, and a few times he talked about his support for Obama.

Well, I was sitting towards the track side of the stage and couldnt hear a word.
Poor sound seems to be a common occurance this year. Yesterday Gentilly was poor. Tuba show today you could barely hear the tubas. Then Acura.
Picked up and went to Fais Do Do, where the sound is always good.

we went to a "usual" spot, but the wind wasn't helping the sound at all. didn't hear most of the talk ... so not offended. wouldn't be anyway. went to lasr part of requiem .. amazing that!

Keith Spera's review....

This Spera line pretty much sums it up:
When all was said and done, Friday featured a tremendous, hour-long Stevie Wonder performance. Too bad he required twice as long to deliver it.

We did not go to fest today ...
Us locals do need to take a break day every now and again..
but we found a SWEET little local secret...
If you go to the end of VERNA St... you are basically right at the
Acura Stage...
The fest lines up the portolets so that you can't see the acutal stage
but one of the big Monitors is visible thru the fence and the sound
was as good or better than if you were in the back of the in feild..
WOW>....
We had a great time with about 50 or so local people listening and dancing in the intermitant rain to Stevie....
Sure wish I had known about this spot last year for Rod Stewart...
FOr sure dawlins... if there is another huge act at the Acura Stage we will leave the festival grounds and listen to it outside of the gate...
Stevie was great!!!

wow, I couldn't disagree more with Mr. Spera. Stevie was all heart in talking about his mom, the Katrina victims, etc. If one went there only to hear "hits," then I think it's all in one's expectations...I had none. I wanted to see/hear Stevie because he's a Hall of Fame musician...and I got exactly what I wanted. And then some.

I thought Stevie was amazing and the sound was great where I was toward the sidewalk side midway back. He had me way choked up when he barely got through what he said about his mom and the moment of silence was beautiful and some tears fell then. I didn't think he went overboard whatsoever on the political stuff....he was putting it in a way that was more positive about the future vs. ranting about the past. He said what he wanted to say and that was that. Later he brought Obama up again by sort of chanting his name starting off a song but only a couple of times and by the time I realized what he was saying, he had stopped and started singing the regular part of the song. He started slow......bummed that his first few songs were not his popular ones but forgot all about them when he just blew away "Livin for the City" and it was non-stop awesome from there on out. He sounded fantastic....like his voice hadn't aged a bit. I loved Irma out there too at the end. I absolutely loved Stevie!!

Ok, now I read Spera's review.....I do agree that he shifted gears somewhat and forgot about the Ribbon in the Sky dragging on a little because by then I was so Stevie-wild that I didn't care. He sang the song so beautifully that there was no way that could bring me down!
Not many despise politics more than I do, believe me, but I just didn't think he went too far with it.

yea u rite amy.....
stevie has many sides musically...and he showed them all off yesterday..
he did a beautiful version of Loves in Need of Love..im not sure thats
the title....
for a huge outdoor venue like the fairgrounds, and a rowdy dancing crowd like new orleans, i personally felt he did one too many slow tunes...
so i walked over to hear one of Michael Frantis tunes...when i got back
stevie was rockin the house, and kept on rockin till the end...
one of the best composers of the 20th century...his voice was deeper
and stronger than last time i heard him, like 15 years ago...
i also feel he deserves a 2 hour set like widespread panic and the allmans
have received in the past...

He started around 5:20 or so and ended at 7:15ish....so he pretty much had almost two hours.
Poor sound seems to be a common occurance this year. . . . I'm kind of glad to read this, doctor, I thought the same thing yesterday but I thought it was just me. Sound was uneven during Trombone Shorty's set at Congo Square, and the end of Brett Dennen's set at Gentilly. "Uneven" as in it kind of drifted in and out of focus. But it was rarely mixed well for Trombone Shorty. He had the crowd on its feet for the whole set anyway. No problems with Richard Thompson's set at Gentilly b/c we stood right up front for him. His playing was superb, I'd say he's fully recovered from the scorpion sting. And the sound was fine in the Blues Tent -- I heard Marva Wright, John Hammond, and a moving set from Coco Robicheaux.

Stevie was the major reason I was bummed about picking 1st weekend as our fest. I would have been in complete awe and bliss to just breathe the same air for a few moments. Thanks for the positive reports.
As Stevie himself said "You can't base your life on other people's expectations". The list of musicians who were influenced by his genius is very long. So sorry I missed this opportunity.

I thought Stevie's set could have been a little more upbeat. I'm a big fan, saw his show 3 times last summer. The pacing of his set works really well in a small amphitheatre setting, but after standing and dealing with rude people for 4 hours, I thought he could have rocked the house a little more. I ducked out at the beginning of "Ribbon in the Sky", I knew that was going to be a rough one to get through. I didn't mind the politics, the moment of silence reminded me of Bruce Springsteen's set a couple years ago, it was very moving. When he first mentioned Obama's name, I couldn't believe all the booing from the crowd, it seemed like 50% Cheering and 50% Booing. I didn't see any Obama shirts in the crowd, which surprised me. I loved the opening of Stevie's set, 4 songs from "Innervisions" ain't chicken feed

All in all a great show, but......
Although I think Spera went a tad overboard, and although I'm an Obama guy, I really didn't need to hear the rap from Stevie yesterday. Play the music, dammit. You were magical when you did.
Oh, the rain made thiongs festive for the group around me, and the rainbow was a great touch. Thanks to whoever ordered that up;-)

I left the mister and missus mdfest hospitality area after the first few ballads. Had I been able to hear anything Stevie was saying at the start I may have been more into it. As it was I enjoyed a lil bit at most of the other stages before finishing off at Gospel tent and heading home.

lovin' your posts chris j.....

more than a few of us,.. hung loose but very steady in primo space for 2+ sets.... us,.. included an incredibly fun and full of heart and beauty threesome from way of texas,.. one of which is a proud threadhead (please do excuse my soggy nogin' for forgettin' your handle).... personally,.. afta' a full and varied mornin' of food,..blues,.. gospel,.. and tuba,.. i arrived for the last 1/2 hr. of papa grows ever more funky,.. and stayed though all of art and his funked up crew,... and then,.. of course,.. every blessed minute of wonder... (that closin' draw from fais do do land was mighty strong,.. but really,.. there was no way i was leavin' wonder-land)
all that wonderment all took place amongst an amazin' stew of locals and visitors,.. which encompassed the entire spectrum of age,.. gender,.. race,.. and color,.. includin' many a local sista (a few quite advanced in age) who were in blissful heaven (as were we all)...
jus' a few rows back and diggin' every second,.. we even had two incredibly vibrant 70+ yr. old dudes directly from italia in the mix... incredibilmente!!!...
we had young cutie pies in bikini tops :) (includin' one very thirsty young hippie chick)... we even had a visitin' mime dude from san fran (also with an unquenchable thirst for the agave plant).. tried to set him up with my cutie pie danicn' partner,.. but he didn't have the words to seal the deal,.. but he did "speak" highly of the joy of the many wonderful moments...
stevie's personal words,.. both personal and political,.. were as positive as positive gets (afta' all,.. what the world needs right now,.. is love,.. sweet love)... his sentiments were right on in my heart...
it was all,... very,.. very,.. very goooooood........

my friend and i left at the beginning of stevie's first song. i would have liked to stay longer, as the little sound we could hear was oh so sweet, but my bff had worked a 12-hour shift the night before and was exhausted from lack of rest, heat, and walking. we had a long drive across the lake, and we had missed most of the rain (or so we thought).
at about 7:30pm i turned onto my street to find rushing r*** water about six feet from my front door. apparently my area had eight inches of r*** between 6:00 and 7:00- i think we may also have a drainage problem:rolleyes: . the deluge did wash out my driveway and kill my plants, but thankfully the water receded before it entered my house. i was also a little bummed b/c my galactic tickets were in my house. unfortunately i couldn't get inside to get the tickets b/c of the fast-moving water, much less get ready to go back to NOLA for a late show.
ok my rant is over-i'm going to back a bath and relive my jazzfest friday experience (and cuddle with jack).
have a nice night everyone and an enjoyable JF sunday tomorrow!

It was like something out of an O'Henry story for me...Gift of the Magi, perhaps.
My wife, wanting to see Stevie, left Acura because of sound issues and went to the Jazz Tent where Terence Blanchard was doing his Kat***a suite. And because she thought she would find me there in the tent. Myself, wanting to hear Terence and the LPO, turned reluctantly away from the Clifton Chenier tribute (!!!) went to Acura where I thought I would find my wife. There I stayed until the very end. I got in good hearing range only in time for everything after and including "Signed Sealed Delivered". It was mostly magic, and if I had forgotten just who is one of the greatest living American song writing composers....I certainly remember now.
But enough of bringing Irma on stage unprepared..I felt the same way during Paul Simon two years ago...I say that because I am imagining how good it could have been if she had been given a chance to rehearse with Stevie (and/or Paul). So good in fact, I might have been tempted to leave behind my good seats for The Bad Plus. But yesterday, and I hope Chris won't delete this...in my never humble opinion, that avant guarde Jazz trio WAS the best set of the day.

I saw Santana a few years ago at JF (5 or 6 I think) and I found his political comments (mostly anti-Bush, Bush-bashing and anti-war) to be far more troubling than Stevie's. Stevie said nothing negative. He said that he was excited about Obama and he explained why briefly. He did interject (sp?) "Obama" into a couple songs but really it was hard to catch and most didn't. He also touched on religion and about how Jesus loves us. Also a positive. I thought he was great.
Miss Lena said that morning he did about 1 1/2 hour sound check and gave the JF staff a treat.

Been offline the last few days. My wife attended fest for the first time 2nd weekend. Stevie was a perfect end to a perfect day rain and all. Throughout she was dancing a singing right along with Amyloves and the rest of our group. Sound was fine I felt everything he said was unifying rather than dividing. Great perfect performance!

Yea, we had sound troubles for Stevie so we left and caught the Chenier tribute at Fais Do Do, which was rockin good. Danced in the rain right to the end.
It was fun at the Rock & Bowl that night Glen David Andrews (and I think Kermit too) did some Stevie songs. Having seen Stevie in a small venue last year, I was hoping to feel the love at fest like we did that nite in Chicago. Sounds like he brought it and spread it. Musical genius and sweet sweet soul.

i don't know about that -would it have mixed better if you agreed with stevie's political views? michael moore makes a living mixing politics and entertainment. so do jon stewart, stephen colbert and howard stern -my personal top 3 sources for current events. and c'mon -hillary vs. obama has been quite entertaining so far! :) i left the acura stage area early not because of stevie's political commentary, but because the people around me in the aisles were getting pushy and yelling at each other. pedestrian rage and entertainment don't mix.

VWGal

Well, I might be saying something inflammatory here, and I typically butt out before I butt in.....however....if politics and music don't mix, then let's erase 50 years of protest from songwriters like Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan. If religion and music don't mix, then there'd be no gospel tent. The artist reflects the world she or he experiences, and interprets it for himself and for those who want to listen. John Prine's songwriting has a point of view too.

I don't get the analogy, can you explain?
I must say I'm shocked by the negative comments about Stevie's set. The Keith Spera article is mind-blowingly(is that a word?) OFF, in my opinion. The setlist was AMAZING for anybody who is not just a casual Stevie fan. Innervisions is my favorite Stevie album and I was more than pleased that it was well represented. I thought the syncopated call-response chorus of Ribbon in the Sky was great. Did anybody mention that he played Coltrane's Giant Steps?!?!? And yes, the Irma Thomas sit-in was unrehearsed, but it was MAGIC. They were flying by the seat of their pants and that is a good thing. That is what the spirit of jazz is all about.
My first time seeing Stevie live and was blown away. Rain and all, it was a Jazzfest I'll never forget.

I think hes saying Prine is pretty liberal. He may not make a speach about it, but his lyrics are.
For me, artists can say what they like. At a fest, its less offensive, since I can leave for the Fais Do Do, which I did, and enjoyed the show.
I liked the way Lil Buck handled it. Mid show- everything stopped. You stood up, took off your hat, and the bass player played the national anthem. Then the concert resumed.
This will probably be deleted, but im disappointed our sole moderator is not open to discussion. Of course, he agrees with Stevie's views. When conservatives views are bashed here, he is silent. This board is to discuss all things JF. When an artist opens a set with a 5 minute speech- one of the top headliners- it seems to be sort of topical to discuss. Mods should delete personal attacks etc, but discussion about someones comments??

mdfest, I'm COMPLETELY open to hearing whether someone likes or dislikes what an artist says. I am NOT open to hearing whether an artist has a right to express his or her self. That topic has been debated to death. if you want to comment on Stevie's take on Obama, I'll leave that on here. Just don't want to hear whether he had a right to speak or not. i asked why not because in a few hours, there would be 80,000 people taking pix...He couldn't tell me!:(

I didn't mean for my initial comment (now deleted) to be so polarizing, in short we found much more happiness at Gentilly for Prine than there was at Acura for Stevie (surely for many reasons, one of which was Stevie's political rantings).

That's what I think too...we couldn't hear much of anything until the music kicked in, so couldn't tell what was going on in those first few minutes. Glad I stayed for the final payoff, all those hits in a row....magical stuff. My girls and I are grooving to Stevie right now, just waiting on a call for daughter number one to go to the hospital for a CT scan.

Thanks Cleo...she was diagnosed in February with Crohn's disease, and had a flare-up while I was in New Orleans so I headed home a couple of days early. The CT is to find out what's really going on and then some time in hospital might be necessary. We're all learning quickly what Crohn's is all about, not fun for an active 23 year old...but she's a trooper with her mom's sense of humour, thank heavens. :)

My .02! :D
I so agree! PLEASE DON'T WIPE OUT THE POST ON MY BULLHEADEDNESS.
Artists regardless of the medium use their voice because it gets heard. If I was in such a position I know I would do it too. If you like the message you hardly take note if you don't like then it becomes a problem? Free speech is hear to stay I hope.
Stevie Wonder can say any damn thing he wants to regardless of my feelings.

Stevie went into a lot more detail about his mother's death and why he started touring again when I saw him in Phoenix. He basically spoke of how close he was to his mother and how he had a vision of her after her death and he said she "told him to start touring again" That he need to bring the message of peace and unity to the world. It is not a bad message and anything that brings him back on stage is alright with me!!

Yep, I was listening to Stevie talk about his mom...and I started bawling.
Chrisjoseph, I started bawling too. My mother always loved hearing my stories about New Orleans and always thought the Jazz Fest was something cool that I did. Everytime I go there I think of both my mom and dad, I usually have a good cry and fell better afterwards. That's what I love about New Orleans.

Stevie is a genius and a legend but we had to throw in the towel during the painful and neverending "Ribbon". I thought he came out of the gate far too mellow and then he lost any momentum he built with "Livin" and "Higher Ground" with his decision to not let go of "Ribbon". So from the portion of his show I saw, I put myself firmly in the Spera camp. I actually felt kind of bad at hearing alot of negative comments regarding Stevie's performance as we left Acura but we forged on to catch Michael Franti at Congo.
I'm glad some folks truly enjoyed Stevie's performance. Believe me, I really wanted to, but it just wasn't happening. A major disappointment, but that will happen from time to time at the Fest.

How could one show evoke such different reactions?
I mean, really?
The Stevie Wonder set that I and my friends experienced on Second Friday was transcendental.
Wow. The full-on Jazz Fest experience. Even with the water from the sky... Maybe especially because of it.
Did I mention? Wow! I was moved as rarely before.
I guess the mixed reactions prove that the show, like all shows - is subjective. You bring your own point of view, no matter who is performing.
But for me, the wife, and the folks around us, it was a magical, moving musical experience. Definitely in my personal top ten.
I can only imagine what a "really good" Stevie set is like.

Loved the Stevie Wonder set! After all these years, it was the first time I had ever seen him perform.
There were sound issues at the beginning of his set, but these were addressed before the end of the 2nd song. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to stay because I'd forgotten to bring my earplugs that day. I mean, when you can feel the cartilage in your nose vibrating from the bass lines, you have to do something!
Stevie Wonder is the big-hearted type of performer I love. He gives a lot of himself to the audience. Someone in the sky kept turning the water faucet on and off during his set, so I couldn't keep from laughing when Stevie segued into B. Bacharach's "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head."
It was a magical set and I felt blessed to be there, to hear Stevie Wonder speak his mind and sing his heart.

FYI, most of the criticisms ("Started off too slow," "He decided to drag out Ribbon in the Sky") could be leveled against any of the shows since the beginning of his latest round of touring last year -- i.e., it's part of his standard show. Not that I'm complaining in the least -- I consider it among the very top sets I've seen in 11 years of festing.
And for those who are complaining about the opening trio of Love's in Need of Love Today, Too High and Visions, all I've got to say is ... "Are you freaking kiddin' me?!?!!"

Reminds me of Van Morrison. A lot of people were disappointed and I LOVED the different songs he chose to perform.
Did not see him 2007, but thought his Fest performance in 1996 was one of the worst Van shows I had ever seen--until I saw his concert at UNO later that same evening. I've seen Van dozens of times and unfortunately the two times I saw him in New Orleans were the two worst. I later discovered that during his 1996 Fest visit he had recently learned that his then-wife (and former Miss Ireland) Michelle Rocha had been cheating on him, and they split soon thereafter. That may help explain it too; but he is generally a moody fellow (to put it mildly) whom I have seen randomly turn in performances that range from transcendent to obligatory, and everything in between. Glad to hear that his 2007 Fest performance was at least better than 1996.
I thouht Van's set was great last year, he put effort into even the 'greatest hits' which he has been reluctant to perform in the past. I had some fest virgins who came just because of Van, and they were more than happy.

I also enjoyed last year's Van set. Not quite as good as the concert we had heard a couple of weeks before, but still excellent. And with Van -- you never know what you're going to get.
And with Van -- you never know what you're going to get.
YYR. True dat. Glad I have seen him so many times, with so many great shows among them, because I won't pay what he's charging for tickets to see him now. For him more than most performers, I find that my concert experience is greatly enhanced by being within the first ten rows or so; and I believe those seats are now more than a few hundred dollars a piece--face price!

Well, the little log in box says it's been 4 weeks since I last popped in here...time does fly...
We trudged through the crowd and got up in front of the chair section right near the soundboard. We stopped for food before the journey and since we were about 10 minutes early, I had time to eat. :)
Stevie comes out and talks for awhile -- I got a kick out of the fact that he didn't let Quint introduce him and made a point of saying so. The music starts and it's low key, but good. I started smiling, and it started raining, and I put my nifty new poncho on, it stopped raining, I was still smiling, I took my nifty poncho off, etc. and so on for practically the entire set.
I actually enjoyed that one set so much that I really didn't need to hear any more music. Granted, my stay was beautifully long and being out listening to music until sunrise seemed to happen pretty easily this year, Stevie's set just filled all of the right spots for me.
The "Ribbons in the Sky" sing-a-long was hysterical in my section of the field. The guy next to us was literally grunting -- in time and on cue, but it was just funny. The more it went on the funnier it got. Our whole area was into it...
I guess I went in to this Fest with a Wish List that had, among others, 2 performers -- Stevie Wonder and Al Green. I'd never seen Stevie before, so I was super-excited and every bit of it was pleasing. And then Irma comes out! I tried to take a video of that bit, but I was dancing too much.
The political stuff didn't/doesn't bother me. He could have talked about anything and I would have been eager to listen, possibly learn a little about him even if it's contrary to my opinions (which his were not). Complaining about what a musician has to say is like going to Mass and complaining about having to listen the homily.
I think had I ventured out of the Jazz Tent for the Midnight Disturbers in the rain, that would have either tied or replaced Stevie at the #1 spot, but I missed it.

I was so glad I bolted from a scattered Stevie set to hear Requiem For Katrina-A Tale of God's Will by Terrance Blanchard and LA Philharmonic. That was truly sublime. Was happy to hear Livin' For the City and Higher ground before i split. The first 15 minutes of the set were booooring!!! Spera hit the nail on the head.

Good times....good times...:D
Amen, Sha, Amen!

Hi Sha!!! Glad Stevie did it for ya! Michael Franti did the same for us. No regrets missing Stevie. It's about who you missed to see who you saw right? :)
Or you could do what we did, 1/2 Stevie, 1/2 Franti. That made for a tasty musical cocktail.
