First, let me announce the new MySpace for New Orleans finest saxophonist, Charles Neville (http://myspace.com/charlesneville): http://myspace.com/charlesneville.

You may or may not be aware that Charles has been living in western Mass. for a few years, even before Hurricane Katrina hit. He travels back down to NOLA for Neville Bros. (http://www.nevilles.com) gigs, and plays locally with a friend of ours, Rick Maida and Workingman's Jazz Band (http://www.myspace.com/workingmansjazz). The recording on Charles' MySpace page (http://myspace.com/charlesneville) called The Painter (http://myspace.com/charlesneville) is a live recording at the Colonial Inn in Concord with Rick and WJB (http://www.myspace.com/workingmansjazz)>.

Henri Smith (http://www.henrismith.com/) is a vocalist from New Orleans who was displaced by Hurricane Katrina. He has also hooked up with Rick and WJB (http://www.myspace.com/workingmansjazz), playing the Colonial Inn fairly often.

Bourbon Street Food & Spirits (http://www.socialweb.net/Places/6107.lasso) has just recently opened up in Fitchburg. Rick is helping with the booking at this new venue, where one may be able to see Nat Simpkins (http://www.henrismith.com/), Sweet Willie D (http://www.geocities.com/continentalwalk/), or Charles Neville (http://myspace.com/charlesneville) on any given night. There also may be a surprise act (possibly a New Orleans-style funk band (http://trickbagmusic.com)) appearing there soon (wink, wink).

Those who are really missing New Orleans may want to support this new establishment where a few of us will be playing in the future to further the music and the culture of our favorite city.

LOVE Henri Smith. Saw him at a club on Frenchmen Street (during Jazzfest 2004 (I think)) sitting in for a song or two with Kermit. He did a killer version of 'Work Song.' Great voice. Reminds me of a young Joe Willams.

Great Jazzfest story... on the way back to NYC after that particular Jazzfest, Nat Simpkins was at my gate. So I introduced myself and we started talking about Henri. I bought a copy of Henri's CD, 'New Orleans Friends and Flavors,' from him right there.

I still listen to 'Work Song' two or three times a month.
