Just had to chime in that Sunday was one of my favorite days of fest. A few highlights:
Egg Yolk Jubilee -- I always forget how much fun that band is
Running into Threadhead Nation at Shamarr
Mamadou Diabate -- so much joy, so much talent.
Midnight Disturbers -- see Mamadou, plus loved the shirts (especially Skerik's) and the kids dancing on stage
Elvis Costello -- watching Big Sam rip a solo, do a dance and get the loudest ovations of all
The fairgrounds -- watching kids stomping/wading/swimming in puddles; watching people set up a tarp as a slip 'n slide, take a running start and slide into the temporary lake next to the statues; watching people slip in the mud and come up laughing; seeing every possible variety of rain attire from gortex suits, to ponchos to garbage bags to bathing suits.
The jazzfest spirit -- swim trunks 20 dollars, baggie for cell phone -- 5 cents, re-discovering that we are all waterproof -- PRICELESS!
See you all out there next weekend no matter what the weather!

Those were some of my favorites too. I also enjoyed the feeling of mud, muck, and who knows what between my toes.

Yep, I experience the same thing each wet fest day -- apprehension about walking out of a dry tent into a downpour followed by the recollection that a wet jazzfest is just fun as a dry jazzfest.

And there's something about the spirit of people who revel in whatever comes their way that is empowering

This thread brings up my spirits! I was home for 1st weekend, but it was a downer to hear more about the r**n, leaving early, etc. than about the great music.
Good on you guys!!!

Me, too -- and bless the incredibly kind soul on Esplanade who had his friend's garden hose running, willing to hose off our feet, shoes, everything -- what a sweetie!

i was also there first weekend. the folks we all were with stuck out the entire day every day. even when the blues tent was filling up with water. i think i rained more on saturday but sunday was much more messy. that allowed us to get front and center for costello/toussaint though. it was fun to see people walking through the water and mud and the kids enjoying themselves in the puddles.

It really was a great day - if you're scare off by the rain, you're not really that into it! ;)
Midnite Disturbers were amazing among many others... do those guys ever sleep? We saw Stanton Moore and Big Sam with at least 5 bands each this weekend!

First Sunday was magical and one of my best days at Fest EVER !! We got to the fairgrounds an hour before the deluge and found the lightest crowds I have seen since the early 90's. It was great to get up close to the performers and the crazed spirit of the wet and wild Festers was perfect. I will never again fear r@in at Jazzfest.

I missed 1st weekend, but a friend of mine raved about the Midnight Disturbers' set. It sounded like one of those epic performances at the fairgrounds.

It got a little ridiculous. I mean, after getting back to Chicago, we had a birthday party for my daughter. Just as we began to sing Happy Birthday, I noticed Stanton Moore playing the drums, George Porter, Jr. on bass and there was JohnnyGospelTent just to the left of the cake.

Just seeing how happy it made the musicians to have wet and wild festers catching their sets in the rain made it worth the wet.

Amen to that Jordan.....Hanging with Ed at the Midnite Disturbers was one of my favorite fest memories of all time. We were ankle deep in water and muck and it was priceless :)

too funny..
where was david torkanowsky??... openin' all your daughters gifts???... why not,.. he has his hands in everything else...... the dude has been on countless stages over the years.....
big sam was everywhere this year,.. as were most of the krewe from bonerama....
the best locals at anytime,.. mostly anyplace.... that is what makes the fest the best.............
really thought billy joel would have a local horn or two up there on stage,.. but gotta admit his own wind duo were very impressive.... as were his many thousands of r@!n dancers.............

I missed Daivd Torkanowski this year I think. Or maybe saw him once. But, Stanton Moore and George Porter were everywhere. And I ran into Mr. Tent several times and saw him at the side of the stage several other times.

i gotta admit i felt like an old man at times durin' that set... i was tryin' hard to keep my footsies out of the muck as i stayed on the high ground near the path to the right of the stage.... i gave more than a few thoughts to movin' down to enjoy the lake front property in front of the stage... nixed those thoughts and didn't regret it until now....
stayed front row throughout the big r@!ns the day before and damn glad i did.... that was a blast.... the poncho effort was a joke,.. felt like i got blasted with a hose from the bottom up....
