how 'bout Rainy Night in Georgia by the late, great, Brook Benton?

I first heard it in Puerto Rico as a kid in 1969, where I thought I'd experienced torrential sub-tropical rain... In 2 separate Fest trips to NOLA, I've completely re-evaluated my impressions of what constitutes a downpour! My favorite line from the song: "feels like it's raining all over the world"

Tell it like it is baby! I too was shocked that Irma's classic was left out
Judging by your "handle", are you an oldies record collector, or just a fan of the good stuff?
Also surprised nobody mentioned "I Wish it Would Rain" by the Tempts (or was it 4 Tops?)
On the country side, "Love A Rainy Nite" (Eddie Money?)
The others mentioned were killa too, Stevie Ray,CCR, etc.
By the way, the 1927 flood was caused by a long winter & spring of heavy rains upriver in the Midwest. There's a great book on it...
Black people were forced to camp on the levees for days, just like roofs during Katrina, and the men forced at gunpoint to work for free on levee repair. Not whites, tho
With Calvin Coolidges approval, they blew the levee & flooded St. Bernard parish (I think),to protect N.O. even tho it turned out water was actually receding by the time the deed was done.

I have a r@in mix on my iTunes...

1. Feels like R@in (Buddy Guy & Bonnie Raitt)
2. I Can see Clearly Now the R@in is Gone (Otis Redding)
3. Louisiana R@in (Anders Osborne)
4. No R@in (Blind Melon)
5. R@iny Day (John Lee Hooker & Van Morrison)
6. Louisiana 1927 (Aaron Neville)
7. R@iny Day Blues (Tab Benoit & Willie Nelson)
8. Rhythm of the R@in (Dan Fogelberg)
9. Tears and R@in (James Blunt)
10. That R@iny Day's Comin' (Dave MacKenzie)
11. Who'll Stop the R@in (Credence Clearwater Revival)
12. Louisiana 1927 (Terrance Simien)
13. Have You Ever Seen the R@in (Rod Stewart)
14. I love a R@iny Night (Eddie Rabbitt)
15. There'll Be Days Like This (Van Morrison)
16. R@iny Day Man (James Taylor)
17. R@iny Night in Georgia (Sam Cook & Conway Twitty)
18. Louisiana 1927 (Marcia Ball)
19. Still R@ining (Johnny Lang)
20. Thunder Only Happens When it R@ins (Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks)
21. R@in (Gail Wynters)
22. Come R@in or Come Shine (Dr. John & Dianne Reeves)
23. Bayou Breeze (Tab Benoit/VoW)
24. Louisiana 1927 (John Boutte)

Trying to decide an absolute favorite was way to hard for me, so I made the mix... but I guess the real toss up might be between three of them... Van singing Days Like This or Gail Wynters doing an absolute slammin' version of Dr. John's R@in and Feels Like R@in by Buddy and Bonnie...
... and obviously with 4 different versions of Louisiana 1927 in the mix, I like that, but the Boutte version really knocks me out.

Hey man, take a look out the window 'n' see what's happenin'
Hey man, it's rainin'
It's rainin' outside man
Aw, don't worry 'bout that
Everything's gonna be everything
We'll get into somethin' real nice you know
Sit back and groove on a rainy day
Yeah
Yeah I see what you mean brother, lay back and groove.

Rainy day, dream away
Uh let the sun take a holiday
Flowers bathe and uh see the children play
Lay back and groove on a rainy day.

Well I can see a bunch of wet creatures, look at them on the run
The carnival traffic noise it sings the tune splashing up 'n'
Even the ducks can groove rain bathin' in the park side pool
And I'm leanin' out my window sill diggin' ev'rything
And ah and you too.

Rainy day, rain all day
Ain't no use in gettin' uptight
Just let it groove its own way
Let it drain your worries away yeah

Good one, Bry!

What about the one by Van from "Moondance" that begins,"Half a mile from the county fair ..." And It Stoned Me?

And It Stoned Me

Half a mile from the county fair
And the rain keep pourin down
Me and billy standin there
With a silver half a crown
Hands are full of a fishin rod
And the tackle on our backs
We just stood there gettin wet
With our backs against the fence

Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Hope it dont rain all day

Chorus:
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like jelly roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like goin home
And it stoned me

Then the rain let up and the sun came up
And we were gettin dry
Almost let a pick-up truck nearly pass us by
So we jumped right in and the driver grinned
And he dropped us up the road
We looked at the swim and we jumped right in
Not to mention fishing poles

Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Let it run all over me

Chorus

On the way back home we sang a song
But our throats were getting dry
Then we saw the man from across the road
With the sunshine in his eyes
Well he lived all alone in his own little home
With a great big gallon jar
There were bottles too, one for me and you
And he said hey! there you are

Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Get it myself from the mountain stream

"Someone left my cake out in the rain".....

My favourite version of Louisiana 1927 is by Bo Dollis and Wild Maggies off one of their old albums. Long, long before the thing, he had changed the lyrics to "6 feet of water in the streets of the Lower 9th". Still gives me the Gawdamn chills everytime i hear it.

And "Rain" by the Subdudes is one of the most beautiful songs...ever. I saw them play it at Rozy's a couple of years back: they were all huddled in a circle on the dancefloor and were singing it campfire style with everyone around them. Amazing, man.

And It Stoned Me

Half a mile from the county fair
And the rain keep pourin down
Me and billy standin there
With a silver half a crown
Hands are full of a fishin rod
And the tackle on our backs
We just stood there gettin wet
With our backs against the fence

Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Hope it dont rain all day

Chorus:
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like jelly roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like goin home
And it stoned me

Then the rain let up and the sun came up
And we were gettin dry
Almost let a pick-up truck nearly pass us by
So we jumped right in and the driver grinned
And he dropped us up the road
We looked at the swim and we jumped right in
Not to mention fishing poles

Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Let it run all over me

Chorus

On the way back home we sang a song
But our throats were getting dry
Then we saw the man from across the road
With the sunshine in his eyes
Well he lived all alone in his own little home
With a great big gallon jar
There were bottles too, one for me and you
And he said hey! there you are

Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Get it myself from the mountain stream

Thanks Bry - I was just about to go find the lyrics to post here. It is one of my all time favorite Van songs!

Nice Bass,Bry,,,,,,Was up at Put-In-Bay all last week. Fishing was fabulous! Great friends, gourmet meals & herb, decent weather, drunken silliness. What more could one ask for??? Perfect way to relax after the franticness of Fest. 26th year in a row...

This could really go on and on....
Early Morning Rain- G.Lightfoot
Ashes, the Rain and I- James Gang
Hard Rain's Gonna Fall- B Dylan
Come Rain or Come Shine-Billie Holiday (my favorite cover anyway,Everybody's done it)
And one of the BEST songs ever with a rain reference (but not in the title), Night and Day, written by Cole Porter , sung by 99% of American singers, but the winner on this cover is BONO. This rain turns to steam when he sings it.

Oh, so many great r*#n songs mentioned and while this one won't beat many on the list if an actual vote was taken it is a favorite... "Waiting For The R*#n" by the Rads.

And just to make you smile, when's the last time anyone saw this gem:

Wasn't that one written by Willie Nelson? Great tune. Brook had a wonderful voice.

Rainy Night in Georgia was written by Tony Joe White.
