For the first time in the 17 years of attending Jazzfest I left early. I ambled about and saw quite few acts today. I really was looking forward to VOW and they were great.... Until it started pouring..I rode it out yesterday... all day and it was tough. It was weird jetting so early. Sounded great on the radio though !

We stuck it out. It was actually almost easier than Saturday because the rain came all at once for 30-45 mins and then just stopped completely vs light rain all day long like Sat. Midnite Disturbers were amazing and played in the rain.....just unbelievable. Also, Elvis and Allen were terrific I thought, and Big Sam played with them. Al Green sounded really good but played a rather short set. We were kind of giggling cause he was so winded. Thought we were gonna lose him or something. My kids said Tim McGraw was good too.

Well, I stuck it out for the entire day....where do i go to pick up my medal?
Actually, I'm REALLY glad I did. I took refuge in the Gospel tent during the short bath, and then hit the mud again. Caught Pete Fountain and participated in an awesome second line, then over to see Al Green. After a somewhat slow start, Al found his stride and made me smile...a lot. (I broke my rule of not calling people in the middle of the set and holding the cell phone in the air.) Then I hit Beausoleil (great!), and finished off with Allan Toussaint and Elvis. I really wasn't expecting it to be that good (their album is pretty melancholy in parts), but this was off the hook! Elvis brought the Attractions and Allan brought Amadee, Big Sam and company and the thing rocked....big time. By the time they went into "Pump it Up", I was bopping a foot off the ground. Besides all of that, my favourite sets were Rockin' Dopsie - he's always fun - and Monk Boudreaux's Injuns were fantastic too....

I don't even want to explain our day yesterday. You can call us wimps BUT we drank some Dixi's and ate the best PoBoys ever at Parkway Bakery.
We hung in the horse stables all day Saturday in between running back and forth through the rain.
I have NEVER been that wet..not even in the shower...
Today is awesome and I am well rested....watch out IAC and TIPS.
Can't wait to see all the 2nd week-enders...I heard Mdfest is in town now too.

I left after VOW had to cut their set short. I just wasnt up for being soaked to the gills again. I toughed it out Saturday. I think 2nd Friday last year was worse then this Saturday. I felt strange and slightly guilty leaving early. But a nice Snug Harbor burger and a few Long Islands made it a little better. It rained very hard in the Quarter for almost an hour. Glad it slacked off at the Fairgrounds.

Aha - NOW I know who was responsible for the r**n! I was at the Lagniappe stage watching Egg Yolk Jubilee and the sun was coming out and I put on some sunscreen (which I hadn't earlier because of the clouds) - then, r**n! I thought it was my Murphy's Law at work again. :o
I didn't find it too bad as I had packed like the former Girl Scout I was in a past life and brought my rain shell, a scarf, two different hats, umbrella . . . all kinds of gear in case of wetness.
But you're SO correct about the healing properties of vino after a chilly, wet, muddy day! :D

I'm from Los Angeles. It rained more in two day at Jazzfest than I"ve seen in a year (well, since the storm last year). It was definitely worth waiting it out.
Besides the floods in the jazz and blues tents made it more fun. Instead of water coming down at your, it was slowly moving up your leg.
Anyone else notice that the last words of the VOW set before they canceled it was something to the extent of "you should be thankful for this rain. We need it. Oh, we can't play anymore because it's raining".
Best conversation of the day:
Best foods to eat in the rain.
Crawfish Bread was the big winner as it comes in foil and can be eaten with one hand (and the other for the umbrella).
Gumbo seamed to be able to take more water in. Crawfish monica couldn't as well.
Back in LA where it's 95 and sunny. Can't wait to get back to NO on Wednesday night.

it seemed a lot of peeps left early - NO line for strawberry lemonade.
but it was a full house for Elvis and for Al.

do not wear thongs on wet days - they sent geysers of mud onto the wearer and others.

From the Banned Words thread.....
I stood all through that mess last year without an umbrella, raincoat or even an ounce of common sense. I watched Warren Storm risk his life to try an finish "Spoonbread". I watched the chairs that people flipped over to protect their belongings float on by. About 5 inches of rain and an hour and a half it was all over. I aint afraid of no stinking rain..... And you shouldnt be either. :D
MIKE!!!
My wife and I were sitting in the comfort of the Blues tent when "it" started that Saturday... really enjoying James Cotton and saying to ourselves while watching it pour, Boy I hope it slows down because we want to see O.A.R. and the last half of Billy Joel. Sitting dry and comfy I remembered your post and said to myself "you know what, I aint afraid of no stinking RAIN either!!!
So out we went, walked over to gentilly and stood in the torrential downpour, actually i think it was coming at us sideways! Some people thought it was hail?!! It felt like it! O.A.R came on about 15 minutes late and from what I head Billy started early!! It was friggin cold too! Gentilly was almost deserted when O.A.R. came on, we had a spot really close to the stage and actually had fun. one by one we watched people leave when it started to lightning & thunder, saying, I wonder if Billy is playing??? so we left and wallked quickly over to Acura. Everything (food, crafts, other stages) were closed by now I think it was only 6pm??? When we got to "LAKE ACURA" Billy was still on and rocking! My wife suggested that I shouldn't stand in the almost knee deep water because of the lightning...BUT, I said I aint afraid of no stinking lightning! ......there were some wet and attractive females dancing nearby too though ;) ......So Billy kicked ass, and out we walked...cold,wet, & exhausted, BUT HAPPY!!!!! And you know what Mike, I thought of your post on the way out, and said to myself again...I AIN'T AFRAID OF NO STINKING RAIN EITHER!
I'm glad you admitted it but for those who missed it, here it is again, in big letters this time...

I can sympathize with all of the wetness and the conditions of the grounds, esp two days of it. the thought crossed my mind. but i Can't say i did the same, rather stayed to the end all three days the 1st W-E (of course, no r--- Fri). One thing my krewe found very disappointing is on Sat that the whole place shut down at 6:30, without any announcement we heard. Food vendors, beer tents, performers Rosie Ledet, OAR, Billy Joel, Keyshia Cole all stopped on or before 6:30. And most of the closing artists kicked off thier sets later than scheduled to begin with (except Billy who we heard started early). It's understandable that they would need-or-want to shut down early, but the hardy did braved the element for several hours and held out to see the closers, only to be short changes. Rosie, like Billy Joe, actually sprinted off stage....but they were dry, drier than the rest of us. I have never seen the fest close early. anyone know if there another post about this up?
cheers

I didn't think Billy Joel ended early. By the time he finished his encore, Piano Man, I believe it was just about 7:00. I couldn't wait to get out of there at that point. We had to retrieve our flag and chairs from the Acura stage after taking harbor in various tents. We caught the last 3 songs of Billy and the crowd was loving it, dancing and singing along in the mud.
I was also being a wimp. My wife wanted to stay for the encore. I was wet, cold, and had a ripped poncho and wanted to leave. My wife won.
Must be something about guys from Chicago named Mike.

Thank you mike, this is the first I hear of Billy's encores. We saw the end of set and he ran off ~6:20, so we ran down to see Rosie (half 1 song before see ended), congo was done, etc. thx for the clarification, we could hear other music going, but the gentilly/fais dodo/congo were closed for business by 6:30-ish, plus ALL food vendors. we might well have tracked back to catch the end of Billy, but i we left b/c the pace and beat of his music is generally slow, and we needed to dance to generate some heat and warmth at that point, hence seeking Rosie, who just disappointed completely...
cheers

tabasco,.. back to the future,.. you is a time travelin' kinda dude.... how in the heck wuz you thinkin' about what mike said/did the day before he done did say/do it???.... he said he bailed on voice of the wetlands (because it was wet ;)),.. which i think (i do do that now and again) a day afta' the big rains' of billy joel day.... and man,.. wasn't that a "hail" of a day in so many ways...
rain drops from every direction a"side",.. it was a day that offered up reasons for both smiles and frowns galore.... smile wise,.. we were front row the whole time of that side ways rain... great set of hit afta' hit,.. and i'm no big joel fan in any way,.. but lawdy,.. i knew those songs,.. one and all....
as for the wet stuff that soggy sat.,.. had me a poncho,.. but it didn't much work,.. as it felt like somebody hosed me down from the bottom up... talk about soakin' wet,.. but afta' gettin' ova' the fact that wet was the new dry,.. we had a blast...... leavin' the fairgrounds in dark lakes was anotha' matta'... but we got ourselves to a nearby house party where the dryers were workin' ova'time and all was well again... life keeps on keepin' on....
