View Full Version : Rainwear question

Anyone have any thoughts on what's best to wear if it pours/thunderstorms or whatever? My thought is to wear what I normally would (shorts, aloha shirt, sandals, etc) and just get soaked and mudwhomp to the music, but I'm open to bright ideas. I can't see myself carrying an umbrella around, even to second line ;-).

Its one extreme or the other. Hip waders or hawaiian shirt.

I wrapped myself in saran wrap and it worked great

I have one word for you, my friend -- PONCHO. Yeah, we looked like big yellow haz-mat dorks out there, but our underwear stayed dry, and so did DH's camera bag and my bag. It actually got cold Sat. afternoon during the biggest downpour and we saw lots of folks without cover whose teeth were chattering so hard we thought they'd break. I'm sure some of them ended up at the med tent getting treated for hypothermia. Really - sounds nuts in April/May in NOLA, but... the temp dropped really fast yesterday. Today it rained, but not nearly like yesterday. Again, we stayed comfy in the ponchos. I'm not an umbrella person either, and those who had 'em yesterday still got soaked when the rain started coming down diagonally! (Ponchos $3.99 at Rite-Aid)

just get soaked and mudwhomp to the music

there's soaked and then there's soaked and cold to the bone - the former is fun, the latter is not. just carry one of those thin ponchos and you can avoid the chattering teeth from h3ll that I experienced last year when my clothes were wet and the temp dropped. I ended up leaving by 5 cuz I was so miserable.

'course, I'm from AZ so my tolerance for the chill might be low. :)

we did ponchos and shrimp boots and did just fine, even able to snake my way to the front of the stage during elvis costello as there was so much muck there to prevent all but the best dressed at the fest. i felt dorky at noon going in. by 6 i was the envy of thousands.

I carry an extra big long hooded r**n jacket. Big enuff to keep my backpack under the jacket and prevent my phone from getting wet and having to sit in a bag of rice the next day. :D

Where did you get yours, festbabe? I went to Walmart and all they had were these ugly green and black ones and they didn't even have my size. I'm gonna check out Target today. I'm feeling optimistic.

Last year when it r**ned the 2nd weekend Friday I wore a poncho and had my windsurfing rubber booties on. Feet got wet but was comfortable and not tromping around in big ole boots. Also, a hood on the poncho is a big plus.

Yeah - I got them at Target. There was only one style left and size choices were limited (I got the LAST size 8). Lot's online at Target, very little in the store. Hope you can get what you're looking for :)

What did they look like?

Black with white polka dots. Pink on the inside. They're 'ok' - I would prefer something more colorful and funky, but these will do. I've got more shopping to do today, I may check out other stores.

Oh, they sound cute! I hope they have my size. And hey, I'm sure we won't care what they look like when we're sloshing through mud. :D

Those hooded ponchos are lifesavers. They're lightweight and small enough to toss in a backpack. Picked up a bunch of them for my crew yesterday morning at Academy Sports for $2.29 and there were terrific. They also have them for around a buck but they're not as long or as heavy.

Got my hooded poncho in my backpack. I love that thing. I used it two years ago when we had that light afternoon sh*wer. It's amazing how fast you can whip that thing out.

When did shrimp boat boots become high fashion?

I bought one of the official Jazzfest ponchos this year - REALLY nice! They're $35, but well made and they fold up nice and small like.

The two things I learned about the poncho this year were:

1. Don't fart in the poncho, and
2. Remember to lift the poncho up - way up - when you pee!

You're welcome.

Not that any of this will matter, since next weekend will surely be dry.

But, two things I learned this weekend, for wet days.
1. Do not wear flip-flops.
2. Make sure your cell phone wears a ziplock bag.

Speaking of TMI, as I sat shipwrecked in the Blues Tent taking in Mamadou and enjoying the rain refugees getting off on his music, I get two text messages with the above information from Mr. Vegas. I shared with the folks beside me from Jackson Wy., who really appreciated the information. Ross, again you perform a valuable, if unsolicited, public service. ;)

Off to the raffle at the fabulous hosts with the mosts Jamns, a beautiful day out there -- then LMF for a bit, then IAC. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! :D

My wife comes from the poncho camp -- I come from the "the wetter it is, the less you wear" camp. Crocs are great, bare feet, better. Quick dry fabric and zip lock bag for cell phone/schedule are a must. If you get too cold, find a stage and start dancing.

I didn't find yesterday too bad as I had packed like the former Girl Scout I was in a past life and brought my rain shell, a scarf, two different hats, umbrella . . . all kinds of gear in case of wetness.

Today I went to Perret's Army/Navy surplus in Kenner and got some kick-arse rain boots for the really slushy days though. :D
