We spent a week in July with kids and didn't really put forth the effort to find the raw bar in the FQ that we loved a few years back. Any recommendations?

Acme and Felix's are the two most popular ones and right across from each other on bourbon and iberville.

Cooter Brown's is a good one evidently in the uptown area.

I'm curious as to other lesser know ones in the FQ and elsewhere. I've only been to Felix's and we sat at a table but the ersters were damn good

Welcome, belle. Don't eat it raw so can't help you. You might want to rethink that avatar. Those disney folks are serious about their copyrights.

Cooter Browns uptown does awesome oysters and has such a selection of beer on tap its crazy - i prefer oysters and abita....just can't go wrong with that combo (Cooters is at the Riverbend where Carrollton turns into St. Charles.....)

Aww, I don't think they'd care about someone using an avatar on a website!! You're not using it for any commercial purpose so I wouldn't worry.

Love sushi but more of a NOLA food fan when I'm there so not much to add.

Raw bars include boiled seafood too, like shrimpies and king crab legs, not a sushi bar....
I woullike to know where a good one is now too. Does anyone remember a place from about 20 yrs. ago in Metairie, called the Steam Bucket? Man, they served up a bucket of boiled seafood- shrimps, crab legs, lobster, clams, ersters, with corn and red taters for about $20. mmmmmmmmm!

The very best one I've ever been to is about an hour from NOLA in Bush, LA. It's a giant seafood buffet with every kind of seafood imaginable fixed in every way; raw, boiled, broiled and fried.

oh wow, that sucks! (no pun intended.) Jazzfest '05 we ate there cause Acme was closed the thursday night of weekend 2 for a private party. Now I definitely need to know other raw bars to hit up in the Quarter since Felix's is still closed. I sure hope they re-open soon.

JV....Here's a link to a local food critic's site (http://www.nomenu.com/RestaurantsOpen.html)that keeps regular updates and ratings on what restaurants are opened in New Orleans....including the Quarter. For Oyster Bars other than Acme, at the least in the FQ, you can pick from the Desire Oyster Bar in the Royal Sonesta and, better yet, the Bourbon House (http://www.bourbonhouse.com/)....Also if you are willing to venture out of the Quarter, there are several places uptown including the famous Casamento's (http://www.casamentosrestaurant.com/main/main.html) open for lunch Tues-Sat and dinner Friday and Saturday....

Also-Pascale's Menale has a great little oyster bar--you pay for the ersters at the bar, get a red chip, bring it over to the shucker and he serves them on the counter--often way more than you paid for. Top it off with their hot bread pudding...whoa
Casamento's is a must see, must taste--one of the last places on earth that still fries its stuff in lard (believe me, it makes a huge diff). Their fried soft shell crab is nirvana.

then after you eat at Casamento's, you walk up two blocks to Tee-Eva's praline/snowball shack and get a few pralines and tiny lil sweet potato-pecan pies. double whoa.

That was the threadhead Acme slurge, wasn't it? Or did we do that on a Wednesday? Guess the whole place wasn't closed though, we just watched the huge line from the balcony upstairs.

I remember it, but I never went there. Now if you're a reaaal old-timer, do you remember a place on Toulouse named Lautrec's? They had my favorite oyster bar, a lot of atmosphere, and hopping disco music (hey, it was the times).

We actually only did it that year. The next year we talked about doing a crawfish boil in the park for Marcia in the park but then Ingrid's BBQ came along. Stay tuned here for any other fun ideas we may come up with for this year :)

I can't help it. I'm a fossil. It's not like I said, "I was at the Dew Drop back in the late forties when this kid named Antoine strolled in to play the piano..."

Was that there until the early eighties? I seem to remember some place near Burgundy...but it would have been a couple years after I hid away my platform shoes and flares. My wife, not a raw bar fan, does remember getting a great dish of trout almandine at a similarly named place around 1976.

I don't think it made it to the eighties. They did have some good food there, and the mid to late 70s is the right time frame.

Before the thing,.. we always favored the stand and slurp at Felix's as they placed them in front of you one at a time (selects only) over the sit and slurp of Acme.. The Acme oyster cam is a must for those friends who take a pass...

The Bourbon House is a great time (despite the high brow aim)... A seat at their raw bar tones it down right nice,.. and the selects always find their way to you,... and the shuckers there have a way of counting that I like..... They have a huge combo platter that they serve up,... easily enough for four (who aren't making it the main meal)...

I always stand or sit at the bar where they shuck.. A word to the wise,.. be close to what you eat raw... I have witnessed many a raw one spend some direct contact time with those nasty prep counters,.. and they always make it onto the platters that go into the dining rooms...

Desires was where I was first introduced to slurpin' and I still have a couple of meals there each year.

Yes, I was at Felix's bar during FQF, ten days ago and the oysters were fresh, cold and delicious. The lines were non-existent even as Acme's stretched into a hour and a half wait. Didn't see charbroiled oysters on the menu, which we had enjoyed at Acme (along with a killer soft-shell crab po-boy) earlier in the week end but otherwise Felix's is a tasty alternative.

And when there is a line, you got the lagniappe stage right there for entertainment. What a great festival!

YYR, Dank. They were cold, salty, large and delicious last Friday evening. Oh yeah, and FREE (but be sure to tip your friendly shucker generously!)

Somebody I had not seen before named Nelson (I think - God I'm bad with names) was sittin' in for Joe K. at the piano, but he knew his way up and down the 88's in fine New Orleans style.

His name is aaron (sp?) and he's the drummer for Juice. for out of towners the place is Les Bon Temps on Magazine. as for the free oysters on fridays the quality has gone down hill since the new kitchen went in early this fall and they moved the oyster bar on to a table in the middle of the floor in front of the kitchen. dirty place with lots of smoke; not condusive to raw oysters.
