Belle, the general wisdom is that the Brass Pass is the way to go (plus it supports WWOZ). The VIP seating areas aren't that great with the Big Chief and with the $350 Brass Pass, you get in & out privileges for every day of fest, dedicated port o potties, your own line to get in to fest, special areas with fresh fruit and internet access. I haven't actually done the Brass Pass before so others who have can add more, but we bought em for this year!

Hi, Belle! My take on the Big Chief is that it is a convenience for folks who like to sit during some of the Fest, so it spares them from dragging chairs around all weekend. I think it has potential for freeing up some of the congestion in the dancing areas near the stages. So, I think it's a good thing.

While the seating is limited, and not guaranteed, with the B.C. pass, you
can probably get a place to sit if you show up early. I've never purchased one of the B.C. Experience passes, but I think chrisjoseph did one year.

It seems like there are many more VIP sections roped off than there were in prior years. There was one for Shell VIPs last year. It's sort of becoming like the traditional fai do do, where the young, unmarried gents would have to go to a designated "pen" when they weren't out on the dance floor with a partner!

Of course, I rather like the idea of all sorts of people from all walks of life mixing and mingling, dancing and eating, joking and laughing together at the Fairgrounds.

I have bought the WWOZ Brass Pass the past two years. It's a wonderful thing. What I like the most is the warm welcome you receive from the folks at the 'OZ tent and the speedy access to the Fest that you are granted when you bear one.

I will check out the other one too! Just trying to learn. We want to mix and stuff but the in and out sounds good. We plan on late night activities too!:D

The toilet paper is always a plus! Guess I could bring my own. Hubby just broke an ankle :( and the leg will require surgery so I thought he might want to sit a bit too without lugging chairs.

Thanks all

Belle, hope your hubby is quickly on the mend.

I don't know where the 'OZ hospitality tent will be located in '07, but in previous years it was very close to the air conditioned Grandstand which also has restrooms with attendants, Real Flush Toilets, bath tissue, and hot & cold running water.

newbie question(first time Jazz Fest goer with lots of questions) :o ... from what I'm gathering from the Brass Pass thread & this one is that the Brass Pass is the one get right? So normally you pay around $40.00 "per" day to get in? ... and Brass Pass is $350.00 for an entire weekend? or am I misconscrewing it?

hi, bluedog, the 'OZ Brass Pass can be used by one person for the entire Jazz Fest, both weekends.

I don't know if they will have it this year, but 'OZ had the OverPass in prior years. It allows multiple users to gain entry to the Fest, but not on the same day.

It costs a little bit more than the Brass Pass, probably about the same as a B.C. Experience VIP pass.

WWOZ holds a special place in my heart, so if you were to ask me, I'd say, "Yes, the Brass Pass is the way to go."

If I could, I'd buy a B.P. and B.C. Exp. VIP pass!

best wishes

Belle - I did the BCP in 05 (first year they had it). Not worth the money in my opinion. Some of the seating/viewing areas were great, others were pretty far away. In fact, the seating areas at Acura and what is now the Southern Comfort stage were far enough removed that I felt I was missing the connection between the performers and the crowd - I was a spectator when I wanted to be a participant. Definitely didn't feel that way in 06 when I waded back into the thick of things.

I also don't place much value on the leave/re-enter privilege. For those 8 hours I can't imagine wanting to be anywhere but the fair grounds....

Word is the tix are $40 at the gate this year, but I'm guessing $25-30 if you buy in advance. We'll know for sure in a few days. But all 6 days at $30 is still $180, vs $300 for the brass pass. That extra $120 is buying you 6 days of some fruit salad and cleaner port-o-lets.

It's absolutely for a good cause, and if you want to support WWOZ, well God bless you for that, but as a strictly economic proposition, I'd have to say, just buy the regular daily tickets with the riff-raff and Fest away.

I keep thinking hard about it, but translated to Canadian dollars the difference gets big, and I can't even use the tax receipt to offset the difference. Still thinking, though.

to add to that, brass pass is actually $350 (I THINK some of it is tax deductable, so if you itemize your taxes, it a deal...) - however, in the past, i've always just bought my tickets way in advance, at the jazz fest box office (last year it was at teh superdome) with cash - that's the cheapest way to do it, no ticketmaster fees - only trick its on a cash basis and you need a contact in NOLA.....

Oh, and re: the BIG CHIEF PASS - absolutley crazy overpriced for seats way away only at teh big stages, unless you really have problems with crowds and people (in which case you really shouldn't be at teh fest) or just have money to burn (don't we wish) i just don't see the benifit (now, i wouldn't complain if someone gave me one, only so i'd have access to the Big Chief portolets at teh acura stage....)

Sorry, just to clarify for newbies... you can't get a Brass Pass for one weekend only. We just think about how few acts come our way, factor in how much they cost here and then realise and celebrate that the whole bloody Fest is a bargain... including the BPs.

For what its worth, the festival sold out of the big chief tickets last year and many were repeat buyers. With the brass pass you have access to the wwoz oasis and can get some fruit, see some friends, and its a nice place for a pit stop. You are supporting WWOZ radio. The big chief has special exclusive viewing stands at the big stages and tents and has a big chief lounge which is air-conditioned, has light snacks, a bar, has couches and bathrooms with indoor plumbing, tvs so that you can see the performances. Its a different festival experience. My wife attends the Festival every year and is pretty well taken care of - meaning she has stood infront of and beside every stage at some point. A friend of ours gave her a Big Chief pass in 2005- his dad went to play golf - and she was impressed. When she wanted to watch a band, she could just cruise up and she had a seat.

i had big chief passes for the first time last year. absoultely worth it. will do again for at least one weekend this year. probably not the other one to diversify the experience. i even went to see buffett for the first time in 20 years, just to see what his post-k speech/performance would be like (something i would never consider without the big chief).
my in-laws, locals with lots of money and a few years on them would never even consdiering attending the fest without this option. my understanding is they are attending at least 3-5 days this year. nuff said.

Thanks Dr. A,

We am going to need this now. Hubbie just underwent surgery today on that damn ankle and will need to sit. Heck I guess I will need a wheel chair at this point. We are going come hell or highwater (perhaps not the best analogy post Katrina) I will just have to work more and dance (with him anyway:D ) less.

We are buying Big Chief, haven't heard from the radio station anyway. I need to be able to sit him down and rest. Swelling and complications are to be avoided.

So excited about our 1st (not last) Jazzfest. Just last night I told hunny bun we are going for both weekends when these kiddios are gone! Something to look forward too.

Belle Belle - given your current situation, Big Chief is the way to go - i have some friends who did it, and they really did enjoy it - i do a camp at teh acura stage and am very happy with my set up - BUT if i had money to burn, i'd add on the Big Chief simply for the convience of the clean port o potties at the Big Chief area by Acura - also, my grandmother who was 89 at the time went to the Fest a few years back, she was in a wheelchair and did fine......

I did the BC last year. It was nice to be able to take a seat whenever you liked, but as mentioned earlier, you were very much removed from the concert. Most of the time the bleachers were empty until the big acts were playing at the end of the day. I finally decided to go down by the stage with Bruce Springsteen! That was incredible! The question is, Is it worth the extra money for the added convenience?? I'm trying to decide for this year.

2nd year in a row with the Big Chief pass, bathrooms are a plus, the bar at the Acura stage was great, no line and Ice cold draft beer. Not a big fan of the seating locations, but they should be better this year. BTW BC tickets went up to $600 this year. Two tickets = $1278. Thats about $25 an hour if you break it down, not a bad deal.

Side bar: I heard Dooky Chase should be open around Fest time, thanks to a large donation from Starbucks. Might have to rethink my position on Starbucks.

We purchased BC tickets (this is our first time @ JF). They are supposed to have light snacks avaliable. Any idea what we can expect? Is there anything stronger than beer avaliable?
Also, is there room to stand & dance or are you confined to seats?(I won't be liking that!)

A shout out to my friends. DRAFT BEER (are we in trouble or what!)

Ill try not to kill you and tell you that the beer selection is one of the most puzzling (not really when you think of the marketing) issues at the Fest..it is miller GD, miller light and Fosters. Not an Abita in sight...... but sponsorship is sponsorship. I would like to think that beer is really a food - and as such, should conform to the rules of the food vendors (showcasing LA cuisine etc.) - but money is money and the fest is not a cheap production....and I'm not sure the folks at Abita would really want to produce the quantity it takes to serve the fest..but then again - I don't know that anyone has asked them.

Maybe I should send them an e-mail begging them to apply for next year....hmmmm

There is no hard liquor at the fest - but there are jack daniels frozen lemondaes.....(not a fan).....or maybe that was southern comfort>? Someone recall from last year>? I may be unintentionally lyin' here....

It was Southern Comfort, not JD, and Daquiris, not lemonade. One booth over between Fais Do Do and the SoCo Stage. With SoCo sponsoring the blues tent this year, it may move.

There's also Pilsner Urquell on draft near the Gospel Tent. Not Abita, but something to help sate the beer snobs.

Hey......thanks....I told you I had forgotten....about the beer snob comment - time out...my point was that it should be something local - maybe Dixie? everyone likes something different...... And while coca cola and miller both employ people in the area - they are not local.

My husband and I did the Big Chief passes 2 years ago. He made use of the seating areas more than I did because I like being closer to the stage. But it was nice being able to retreat to the reserved seating when I didn't feel like dealing with the crowd. I'm not sure I want to do the passes again. Did somebody say that the reserved areas would be in a better location than before?

Everyone has bitched for years about Miller products being the only beer available. Miller has been a sponsor for a LONG time (maybe from day one). Unless Miller decides to give it up, you won't see another product being offered...ever! I'd sure like to suck down a couple of nice cold Abita's too, but unless they start packaging it in cans or plastic bottles (and Miller buys them), you'll never see it on the Fairgrounds. Hell, I'd like to drink a Pepsi too, but that ain't gonna happen either. :(

Yes. But Miller is owned now by SAB; it was after that takeover that Pilsner Urquell (another SAB-owned brew) made its first appearance in the draft booths by the tents. So the best hope for better beer at Fest would probably be SAB Miller buying some other brand.
