Hey Now and Happy New Year All!!! Ive Been out of the loop for the past several weeks, and hope the New Year sees everyone doing well. I have been trying like crazy to get away for the Mardi Gras again this year, (ya know- Radiators, George Porter, Galatic, cheap plastic trinkets and beads,19 year old drunken college gals) but it dosent look like its in the cards..... However, I am resilient by nature and have decided to head on down a couple of weeks early for the George Porter-Johnny Vidacovich-Fred Wesley tribute to the late great Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown, to be held at Tipitinas on friday Feb 2nd. This promises to be a marathon of funk and soul, showcasing the music of one of our nations' True Originals. The line-up for the tribute is awesome! Fred Wesley was a founding member of the JB Horns, along with Maceo Parker and Pee Wee Ellis, and also was in Van Morrisons' band for several years. Of course, George Porter is the bassist for the Meters, who were influenced by James Brown, and whose music later became a model for some of his funkiest albums. I am sure this show will be a night to be remembered!!! The next night George Porter will be playing with his longtime band the Runnin' Pardners (Russell Batiste, Mark Mullins) which is always a great show.... Then, on sunday the 4th, the plan is to be cheering on the New Orleans Saints who WILL BE playing for their first ever Superbowl Championship!!! If any of this sounds good to any of you all out there, please feel free to get in touch!!! I had such a good time at our get together in December with the Jammins (Jen and David), Amy and Gail (Amylovesthefest and her sister Piscesgirl) Frank (Nola) and Johnny Gospel Tent. It would great to see you kids again.... This trip is something I just decided on over the last couple of days, so if you know of other stuff going on during the weekend (when do the parades start rolling this year) please pass along any suggestions. Its great to be back on the boards, and hope to see you all soon, Matthew. PS - God Bless New Orleans!!!

Hey Now Jonnygospeltent! Hope the new year finds you and yours happy and healthy.... I really enjoyed hanging out at Carrolton Station with you and Frank (Nola) in December, but ive decided that five dollar pitchers of Pabst Blue Ribbon are not a formula for success for this Young Mormon!!! Sorry you will have to pay witness as the Saints crush the Bears tommorrow, but Cest la Vie.... Amy, hope you and Jeff are behaving yourselves, but I am not holding my breath (but seriously folks, it was neat meeting up with you two fine kids at Vegoose). Thanks for the link Dumbtourist, it looks like the parades wont get rolling until after I head back home, but it was thoughtful of you to get me the information. Good luck in Vegas!!! Best to All, Matthew

No plans yet but we're definitely thinking about Vegas, no super bowl plans just yet. We've got some flight vouchers, I had a killer deal at the Wynn but it only went thru 1/19. I still may see what I can finagle, love the Wynn. We haven't been to Vegas for fun since Vegoose, might be due :)

Speaking of Vegoose, the Blueroom took down the Galatic video's...sure wish I had copied them.

You do know that Superbowl weekend is the busiest of the year for Vegas, don't ya Amy???

Oh hell, it's ALWAYS busy there! The only other city in the US wtih more hotel rooms is Orlando and we've been in Vegas (Poker World Series I believe) when every room in Vegas has been sold out.

Okay, but your a lawyer and can sue your way in....I'm just a dumbtourist and subject to the regular rules, and since I never play big money, not likely to be comped.

But anyway, if you and Jeff (or just you...I promise not to tell Jeff if you promise not to tell smarttourist) plan on getting there, let me know....I'd love a meet up!

Looks like we can still get $210 at Monte Carlo, I've stayed there before and it's fine. Might check with my friend who is a high rolla at Wynn and see if we can get back there :) I think New Year's is actually the busiest weekend, but I actually like Vegas better in the summer for pool time :)

I put this in the Geaux Saints thread but I thought it would be appropriate here, too:

Okay, I don't want to put the cart before the horse but it seems I have no choice. I talked to my brother today and he said from what he's heard, that everybody who is planning on watching the Superbowl in a bar in New Orleans is making reservations for tables today cuz they are gonna be booked up after tomorrow if the Saints win.

If the Saints win tomorrow, I most definitely am driving down to New Orleans for Superbowl weekend. Is there any meeting place or bar that any threadheads are getting together to watch the Superbowl? I would like to hook up.

Hey Now Pokerchick, I dont know what everyone else on the board has planned, but it would be great to have someone else to watch the Saints win the Superbowl with!!! Why dont you let me know what your plans are, and if you would like, maybe we could get together and watch the game. I am sure we could find somewhere where we could get a table, or a seat at the bar, even if we have to arrive early. Have a good weekend, Matthew

You'll be there for the coolest, sauciest, most..uh..interesting parade of ALL. The Krewe du Vieux rolls on Feb. 3rd. If you want a sense of what mardi gras WAS in the way long days ago--check it out. Its the ONLY parade that hews to the traditional protocol in that it is all on foot, the floats are on mule-drawn carriages and there are brass bands in between each float. Therefore, it is also the only one that can pass thru the French Quarter. It is, however, not for the sensitive of sensibilities--this is NOT a family/kid oriented parade. Extreme political satire and bawdy joy is the order of the day. You will not regret witnessing this one...
check out the past year's stuff on their site www.kreweduvieux.org
p.s. NOLA's beloved commentator Chris Rose is scheduled to be the "king and chief warden" this year--although he may find himself stationed in Miami that weekend to cover some ball game ;^)-in which case the reasonable facsimile of Ernie-K-Doe, emperor of the world, will apparently lead the parade.

Hey Now and Thank You for the thoughtful heads-up NYCgal!!! I was hopeful that I could catch some of the krewes that roll early for Carnival Time. Its always nice to catch a parade, and I look forward to being back in New Orleans in a couple of weeks! GO SAINTS!!!

Hey Now, Matthew, just saw this thread. I will be in town the weekend of the 4th, unfortunately, as my plans to travel to Miami came unglued about the end of the 3rd quarter yesterday! But hey, it was time for New Orleans to start focusing on Mardi Gras anyway, and the Saints had a great run. It was a lot of fun and as hard as it is to admit it, the Bears were the better team (yesterday) and deserve their shot at the Super Bowl.

Since I was planning to be in Miami, I have nothing planned at all for that weekend, so I'm sure we can find some time to catch some music and stir up a little trouble in the FQ. As mentioned above, the Krewe de Vieux rolls that Saturday in the Quarter, and should not be missed. If nothing else, we should make plans to get together for a cold beer (please, no more PBR draft - that stuff will kill you the next day! I'm sticking with Abita this time around!)

Let me know when you get to town.

Hey Now, Matthew, I just got an email saying that the entertainmant for the Krewe of Muses after-parade party on Feb. 15 will be the Radiators and Dr. John. Are you sure you don't want to change your plans to come to New Orleans for that show? It should be a good time - I went to the Muses party a couple of years ago when they had the Go-Go's playing.

Hey Now Frank Great to hear from you, Happy New Year!!! Sorry about the Saints, but I feel that the team did New Orleans proud this season. They gave the city a reason to get excited about something, and it was nice having some positive attention foucsed on the Crescent City. I look forward to getting together when I fly down, I will be looking for any excuse to spend some $$$ propping up the local economy!!! I am looking forward to Krewe de Vieux, and want you to think about the James Brown tribute at Tips on friday night as well. I am sure it will be a good un!!! George Porter, Johnny Vidacovich, and Fred Wesley all jamming on the Godfather of Souls' tunes; sound pretty allrite with me. If you hear of anything else, let me know,I fly in on thursday the 1st of Feb. If anyone else wants to meet up for the parade, the Tips show or just a beer at some point, please let me know. Its always a pleasure to be with others who love the Music and Magic that is New Orleans!!! God Bless you all, and God Bless New Orleans, Matthew

Aw crap Mike...I was going to get your info and send you a kingcake after I recover from my mild funk depressed state. Even though we didn't officially bet, you were nice not to harrass me during the miserable game! So now I'll have to think of something else. Or I'll give it some time and send the firemen another king cake!

Hey Now Kids!!! Gettin' my bags packed and really looking forward to the weekend!!! I fly in tommorow afternoon, and this is what I have planned so far. Friday night is the George Porter-Johnny Vidacovich-Fred Wesley tribute show at Tipitinas (on the Meters site its rumored that Art Neville will sit in!!!) and then on saturday, I will catch the Krewe du Vieux parade as is rolls thru the Quarter. Ibjammin and Hebejammin said they are going to be stationed at Checkpoint Charlies' (on Frenchman St.) for the parade, so that seems like the natural place to go! If anyone else has ideas please let me know, I look forward to getting together with anyone so inclined, and the cold ones are on (and IN) me. Hope to see ya soon, Matthew P.S. NOLA, send me your Phone # as I have misplaced it blosch@mstar2.net
