bluesgirl fan girl sigh....

Louisiana-based singer, songwriter and slide-guitar monster Sonny Landreth will release his ninth album, titled From The Reach and his first on his own Landfall Records label (distributed by Ryko Distribution), on May 20. On it, Landreth does something unprecedented in his body of work as he collaborates with five of the greatest guitar players on the planet — Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson and Vince Gill — in some jaw-dropping performances. Also making appearances are the legendary New Orleans pianist and singer Dr. John and Margaritaville’s iconic troubadour Jimmy Buffett.

OOOh WOW! Can't wait to wrap my ears around this 1. From the Reach, huh? To Sonny's comments regarding this title, I'll add that his guitar guests all are vets (including Landreth) of the Crossroads Guitar Fest ... voluntary participants from a reach by Clapton for a fundraiser. I hope there's many more recording collaborations to come outta this. Anybody not yet familiar w/ dbl DVD of Crossroads '07 & '08, skip renting & just buy 'em!

“From the Reach” is here!

The week of May 19 marks the first simultaneous worldwide release of a Sonny Landreth album, and you can pick up a copy via SonnyLandreth.com now! “From the Reach” will be available all at once in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia, and it’s Sonny’s first disc on his own imprint, Landfall Records.

The new album features guest appearances from a number of especially noteworthy friends: Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Vince Gill, Eric Johnson, Robben Ford, Dr. John, Jimmy Buffet and Nadirah Shakoor. Longtime collaborator Dave Ranson is again on bass, Mike Burch is on drums, and friends Steve Conn and Sam Broussard are featured on keys and acoustic guitar, respectively. The new disc can also be purchased electronically from iTunes and other digital media outlets.

“It’s the classic dream come true,” Sonny says of the all-star affair. “I wrote these songs with these guests in mind, as a tribute to their influence on me. Inviting them to come aboard led us down some amazing paths.” The album’s been in the works for the better part of a year, though a couple of tunes have longer lineages: the riff from “The Goin’ On” dates back to Sonny’s first stint with John Hiatt and was written years later with Wendy Waldman during pre-production for “Levee Town;” and “Howlin’ Moon” came together during demo sessions for “The Road We’re On.”

“From the Reach” also features Jack Spencer’s photography and graphic design by Grammy nominee Megan Barra. “Megan’s work has been inspirational and very much a part of the music itself. I’ll always embrace the LP concept with the music and artwork going hand in hand,” Sonny says. “And my old friend Jack Spencer’s incredible imagery projects the essence of what this album is about.”

The disc’s title, Landreth notes, pulls in many meanings. “When I write, I try to surrender to the flow of it all and see what bubbles to the top. This time around, the word reach kept coming up. In addition to its obvious meaning, it can relate to an expanse – a reach of sky, desert, water, or in particular a channel or body of water. Also, it can refer to the direction of the wind in nautical terms, so Megan utilized waterway maps in the package design. I felt like that all really fit well thematically with the album. For me, the title is the connecting thread in terms of the writing process and the project as a whole. I reached out to all these great artists and what you hear on this disc is what came back.”

“The band was impeccable,” Sonny adds. “Though we’ve recorded before, this time Dave and Mike were involved in every step of my writing process. I wrote the songs specifically for each artist in hopes of catching their vibe and their magic, and together the three of us tested the songs live in various venues.”

The first time I was able to just sit down and listen was yesterday driving in from New Orleans. So I want to listen without looking to see who is playing on each cut. As #4 starts, I just smile and say to myself that is Eric Johnson. I'm sure glad you discovered Eric. Last time I saw EJ was at Clapton's Guitar Festival in Dallas 3 or 4 years ago. I sure like #5 with the other Eric playing. Great cd!

I agree completely with your comments. I was worried that guest artists would render him a backing musician to songs that don't fit him. But, that is definitely not the case.

BTW, I have Eric Johnson's Ah Music Viacom CD from the eary 80's and love it. There are some excellent instrumentals and his singing is similar to Sonny Landreth in in a light but not syrupy way.

I think it depends a lot on the venue. We saw him last summer at a casino in Milwaukee and couldn't believe that everyone was sitting down in their booths looking like they were watching Wayne Newton. A different venue and/or a different crowd would have had them standing and rocking their socks off.

I'm guessing that fancy foods and sitting through a 'show' might go hand-in-hand. I don't think its the folks present at a given venue so much as the venue itself.

We have Sonny here this year at our Calgary Folk Festival in late July, his first visit to that event, maybe first to Calgary as John Hiatt brought the Guilty Dogs the last time he played here with a band.

Regardless, Calgary is a notoriously dull crowd in a soft-seat venue-- Ross and I suffered through a Neville show last summer, nearly killed us, no one would get up. I expect a significant improvement this year when Maceo Parker plays in the same venue.

BUT, the folk fest is different and that audience will eat Sonny up in a sunny park/green grass/barefoot setting. Not many will know how to dance to him though...the young folkie/dread/alt crowd are not great dancers, they bob up and down and jump all around real good, just not on the beat -- weirdly entertaining. As long as they like Sonny, I'm good.

Probably Grant Street

It's a live album vs a studio release and most closely represents his small venue gigs which are THE BEST! I don't generally go for live albums but I'd make a definite exception in this case. Do you like to drive? This is the best driving cd I've ever heard.

The new one, From The Reach, is fantastic. It includes a number of guest artists that only add to the recordings without distracting in any way from Sonny and his music.

This particular venue was Blossom Center near Akron, OH. I've never been asked to sit down while in the lawn at any other venue, but I go all over the midwest for shows, and with rare exception folks tend to sit on their hands.

Sonny is playing 2 sets at Mel Meltons Cajun Restautrant (http://www.papamojosroadhouse.com/)this Sunday. 100 seats for each set. 7:00 pm sold out. Still tics for the 4:00 pm show.

WooHoo. Sonny, Mel's Cochon de Lait BBQ, and a cold Abita.

For those who don't know who Mel is (Sonny co-wrote Congo Square w/ Mel and Dave):

A North Carolina native, Mel went to Lafayette, Louisiana in the summer of 1969 to visit a college friend and play a little music before going back to UNC. His plans changed when he became totally immersed in the rich culture and physical beauty of southwest Louisiana. He moved permanently to Lafayette at the end of the summer and began playing in a band he co-founded with Sonny Landreth, the Louisiana slide guitar-playing superstar.

To help support his new musical career, Mel took a series of jobs in the best Cajun restaurants in the city and discovered a new talent and another part of Cajun lifestyle, Louisiana cooking. Over the next few years he honed his musical and cooking skills, eventually becoming a well known Cajun chef. At the same time, he was becoming known as a singer and harmonica player specializing in a zydeco style of harp playing that has become his trademark.

Mel arrived in Austin, Texas in 1972 at the start of the Austin music scene. He took a job at a BBQ joint near Lake Travis as a dishwasher, but eventually moved up the ranks to cook. The restaurant happened to be a hang out for several European chefs who worked at the resorts situated on Lake Travis and Melton was offered a cook position at one of them. While there, he joined Austin’s Chef Association and after several years, became chef at the Tarry House, a private club frequented by many Texas luminaries such as Walter Cronkite, Tommy Lee Jones, Sissy Spacek, and many Texas politicians including the Governor, who held a weekly staff lunch at the club.

In the early 80’s Sonny and Mel formed the band “Bayou Rhythm”, adding C.J. Chenier to the lineup. The band headlined shows nationally and also opened shows for a number of legendary musicians including: Ray Charles, B.B. King, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Dave Edmonds, and The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

During his time with Bayou Rhythm, Mel was challenged to a gumbo cook-off by Rockin’ Dopsie at the 1986 American Music Festival in Chicago. The event was so well received that Melton decided to always cook for the band’s gigs and his peerless Cajun cooking quickly become a signature twist to his shows.

In 1986, Melton left Bayou Rhythm and moved to Chicago to pursue a full time chef career. In his first month there he won the prestigious Grand Prize at the Rolls Royce-Krug Champagne Invitational Chef Competition. Melton opened two new restaurants while in Chicago, one of which was named as one of the top ten new restaurants in the area. He frequently did cooking demonstrations and prepared food for a variety of events, including The Chicago Jazz Festival, The American Cancer Society Ball, Mardi Gras at The Limelight Club, and many others. He also appeared on the local television program “Two on Two,” and several radio programs.

The year 1990 found Melton back in North Carolina, where he still continues to spread his interpretation of the food and music he grew to love down in the bayou country. Mel is back in the spotlight, cooking on stage with his band, The Wicked Mojos, as well as off-stage. He has served as executive chef and independent restaurant consultant to many of the Triangle’s most notable restaurants and food service organizations.

A frequent guest chef at the Southern Season Cooking School in Chapel Hill, NC, Mel has parlayed his unique cooking and musical innovation into a new restaurant venture. Papa Mojo’s Roadhouse blurs the lines between food and entertainment, taste and sounds, visual and musical. The restaurant features Mel’s renowned Cajun recipes, appearances with his own band, and other live Cajun/Zydeco musical acts from around the southeast.

In an attempt to describe the roots of his music and food, Mel recited all of the influences that came to him from his long stay in the Bayou State. “There’s zydeco of course, and Cajun and blues, and New Orleans jazz and funk. But as far as what we’re playing, I like to call it ‘Mojo Music.’ It’s a lot like the food. Down there everyone cooks, but they all have their own little way of stirring it up. When people leave one of our shows or my restaurant, I want them to feel like they’ve been down in the swamp at a big party and they’ve had a great time. That’s what it’s all about.”

Well Fred it was second row, but I saved your seat and drank a mojito for you! Wasn't quite the same, we missed you! Show was great, saw some old friends (hi monalisa!), and discovered a cool new place in the hood to get great food and entertainment. Mel's place is a jewel in RTP!
For any of the Carolina contingent, look here:

which album would you buy first if you did not have any of them?

I'd go with South of I-10, or the new one... which I love, but left at my daughters, so I'm going back to get that baby (and the baby) tomorrow. I'm gonna need it for that 8 hr drive to OBX!

[3]From the Reach - My guitar heroes passed by Lafayette
[4]Grant Street - Live!!!
[5]Outward Bound - To complete the trio with the Levee Town & South of I-10
[6]The Road We're On - Some resonator!!!

[8]Way Down in Louisiana
[9]One of the John Hiatt and the Goners CDs
[10]The other John Hiatt & The Goners CDs

All of them! For starters, though "South of I-10" is the classic of course. The live "Grant Street" has a nice selection - a good mix from several of his releases, and it includes "Congo Square", so it would be a good starter, too.
And any of the John Hiatt with the Goners, too.

Has it gotten out of the 40's yet in Duluth? We were up there a few weeks ago and boy was it cold! Took the train ride along the coast and drove to some of the waterfalls. Too bad we could barely see Split Rock lighthouse from, well, Split Rock. Hopefully, we'll get back sometime when it's a little nicer weather.
