On tour and coming to the Museum of Art in Raleigh mid-August. Woohoo!!!!

Anybody know who The Ageless Beauties are? Hiatt always has a great band, Sonny, Dave, and Kenny being the best! (IMO)

I was wondering the same thing. They are coming to Ravinia in July.

BTW, don't forget his last album had Luther and Cody Dickinson.

They're on the next one. I pre-ordered it at Amazon this morning. Hopefully, it will be better than Master of Disaster.

I was very pleased that he was touring with them when I saw them in Chatanooga 3 years ago.:D

pardon for hi-jackin' a thread, but Bluesgirl seems to have an inside track - when/why did Kenneth leave Sonny's band? I was sorta shocked when Sonny came by for his latest Cache Creek show with Mike Burch on skins - but of course he kicks a$$

Kenneth left this time in mid 2006 because he was tired of being on the road and needed a break from playing.

Actually, Mike Birch was playing with Sonny & Dave before they went on the road with John Hiatt again in 2001. JH wanted Kenneth back, so Mike left. Mike played Sonny's first R'n'B show in around 2001, I think it was.

And the "inside track" isn't really an inside track. It's just the result of many, many hours of stalking. :D

thank you, thank you! now back to your regularly scheduled John Hiatt thread... ;)

btw - I always know if I'm going to be compatible with other music fans by whether Hiatt/Sonny/Little Village comes up in early conversations. I already knew I was in good company here! (cues up "Tennessee Plates" on ipod)

We saw him at R-n-B with Kenneth in 2006 and a few months later at Martyr's in Chicago w/ Mike and I have to say, I really liked Mike's playing. He propelled the music forward with a lot of intensity which is fitting for Sonny's guitar style. Especially the power drunmming on Congo Square.

Interesting you say that! It's one of my "little tests" too. 'Cause if you are into Hiatt, chances are you have my warped sense of life perspective. My other little test is to ask this question:

Who is the "sound" of the Rolling Stones? Keith or Mick? Discuss.

Mebbe The Ageless Beauties are The Nashville Queens later in life. Might get to see Hiatt w/ Immy (David Immerglück) on mandolin & guitar again.

Mick... Taylor that is. (Exile was the last Stones album I loved.)

yeah! I'm there... thanks so much! I wish I had something for you - I got a boot of the one-and-done Slidemania show at Tip's Quarter that I'll try to dig up for ya.

and as an aside, in your avid-fan-dom, have you ever heard about or come across any recorded stuff of Sonny playing with Clifton? There are a few of us out here who HAVE to know whether he toned it down or just floored it. Safe to say the dumble wasn't in place back then, but I'm dyin' to find out what it sounded like.

Get a hold of some Traiteurs, it's more like that but less "slidy". Try the old Blues Attack CD, too.

Oh, did you find the villager on that lagniappe?

I think it's Keef. For me, it's the rhythm guitar that propels the songs along and often provides the key lick that underscores the whole song.

I would love to see that combo again -- the first time I saw John was in the Cry Love era with Davey. They rocked!

But I also saw shows on the Tiki Room tour a few times and loved the band, and how can you go wrong with Sonny on slide?

OK, so Zkitty and I are in N Calif. this week and have a chance to see John Hiatt and the Ageless Beauties in Reno on Friday night - so, has anybody seen this group with John, know who is in the group, have a recommendation, etc.? I'm pretty sure we are going, but just wondered if any esteemed members of this community have any info they'd like to share!

Many thanks in advance....

Looks like the show is in the big ballroom, so it should be comfortable... too bad they didn't revive The Garage venue, from the old Reno Hilton - most of the mid-ticket NOLA acts showed up in that room (when I was booked or the roads were impassable from my home!). Can't find a thing about the new band, so you'll have to give us a report.

We didn't make it to his show here, but someone I work with went and said it was excellent. Said it had a little more country feel, but was rockin'. It's Hiatt. He's good by himself or any band. You will be glad you went.

We saw John Hiatt last nite in San Francisco. An excellent show. Re: the Ageless Beauties, they were Kenneth Blevins (who has played with Hiatt for twenty years), Patrick O Hearn, and a new guitarist (replacing Luther Dickinson), named Doug Lancio (has played with Patty Griffin). All I can tell you is that the show was excellent and Doug Lancio is outstanding!

Well, I am SO buzzed right now -- I just realized I am in Vancouver next Tuesday for a meeting, so I picked up a ticket to see John at the Commodore! This makes my week, my month as it's been WAY too long since I saw my hero Mr. Hiatt. Love Kenny Blevins too....

Great show last night at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno. Ben Taylor (son of Carly Simon and James Taylor) opened with a small combo - very mellow sound, very similar in songwriting and singing style to his father. Then John Hiatt and the Ageless Beauties took over for a nearly 2 hour set/encore that rocked the house. It was vintage Hiatt, and the Ageless Beauties sounded great - they did many of the old favorites - Perfectly Good Guitar, Tennessee Plates, Slow Turning, Memphis in the Meantime, Cry Love, Drive South, Crossing Muddy Waters, among others - plus quite a few from his new CD (which is now on my Christmas list!). If you like Hiatt and have a chance to see this group in action, I would highly recommend it. VWGal, you are going to have a great time at the show in Vancouver!

Yeah...Doug Lancio is a superb guitarist. I've seen him with patty Griffin a couple of times now. He reminds me a bit of Buddy Miller. Should go well with John (who I saw solo in Oz last year - just wonderful - I'd love to see him with a band!)

Thanks NOLA -- this is awesome. I'm listening to the Hiatt discography today and your review just put the icing on the cake for me....John always puts on a heckuva show. I was browsing around his website and he said he's taking most of next year off from touring to spend time with the wife, and to brush up on his guitar skills! People are usually amazed at how well he plays, but he said he wants to remove a lot of "tricks" from his playing -- must be those cheatin' shortcuts that a lot of self-taught guitarists get by with....

Hugs to Kitty and You! Hope the visit with the parents went well :D

Thanks! Since John is taking off next year, I'm especially glad we got to see him last night. I hadn't seen John since he played with the Goners (including Sonny) as the opening act before Crosby, Stills & Nash one of the last years that Jazz Fest did the nighttime concerts at the Municipal Auditorium - maybe 2003 or 2004...
