It ocurred to me that some of y'all might like to learn how to dance zydeco... anyone interested in an informal quickie zydeco lesson? We could set it up at the Fais Do Do stage before one of the zydeco bands.

I'm sure you can freestyle with the best... no lesson necessary.
Zydeco dancing isn't like ballroom, there is room for improvising, but within a framework. Used to be lots of z-dancers at Jazzfest, number has dwindled in past few years, Fais Do Do stage has lots of non cajun/ zydeco now. The serious zydeco nuts go out west to Fest Internationale or Breaux Bridge.
Rock'n'Bowl still rules...

Excellent, Smithers! Now we need to agree on a time. Folks should post whether they want to do 1st or 2nd weekend, no reason we couldn't do one each weekend. Only thang is I'll be at Breaux Bridge 2nd Saturday.
Let me check the cubes & propose a time.
The "zydeco world" will love me for this, our ranks have been slowly dwindling since the cajun fad of the mid 80s. Guys will love it, usually more ladies than men at any partner dancing gig...

I was just checking & the best times for me would be:
First Saturday, right before Rosie Ledet (about 5ish)
Second Thursday, just before Creole Zydeco Farmers (about 12:30)
Trying figger this out, it strikes me that even down time is precious at JF!
First Friday, have never heard Zydepunks, but their rep is not good among dancers, Dwayne Dopsie is fun but plays too fast for most dancers, especially beginners.
Let me check 2nd Friday... already have a conflict between Ozomatli & Burnin' Spear, forget which day that is... right back atcha

Before Bluerunners is workable, with a few issues: Awfully early for me to promise showing up (but possible..)
Bluerunners aren't my fave band, more cajun than zydeco, but I could live with that too
Not many zydeco dance bands that day, Chubby Carrier is a terrific show band but tends to throw dancers with rhythm shifts.. so there might not be many zydeco dancer folks there...
All this is workable, if you're serious, feel free to e-mail me at revjimk@yahoo.com

Rosetree said it all with "you have to crawl before you run". Then he says how competitive he is, wants to get good right away.... since you already know you won't be a star immediately, just consider it a "personal growth experience"

Yeah you rite! My husband plays in a Zydeco band here in Atlanta (Zydeco T). And all of the dancers always come out to his gigs. They specialize in playing music for the dancers. There are always way more women than men. Men can always find a dance partner.
The rubboard player is also a dance teacher, and he gives free lessons before each gig, spreading the Zydeco gospel to new danceers.
Me, I can do the basic move, but that's about it. I'm more of a jumper & spiller myself. So I just find a corner of the dancefloor to do my own thing and keep out of the flow of the dancers.

Residents across the Midwest were awakened Friday by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake that rattled skyscrapers in Chicago's Loop and homes in Cincinnati but appeared to cause no major injuries or damage.
The quake just before 4:37 a.m. was centered six miles from West Salem, Ill., and 45 miles from Evansville, Ind. It was felt in such distant cities as Milwaukee, Des Moines, Iowa, and Atlanta, nearly 400 miles to the southeast.
"It shook our house where it woke me up," said David Behm of Philo, 10 miles south of Champaign. "Windows were rattling, and you could hear it. The house was shaking inches. For people in central Illinois, this is a big deal. It's not like California."

Ross...don't sweat it, my man. I have to consciously fight the urge to submit to the overbite while dancing. It must be some sort of natural reaction in many because one of my favorite people watching activities is spotting the overbite in a crowd of dancers. It's more common than good dancing, that's for sure.
I like your hip action in that pic as well. I too apparently have a natural inclination toward dirty dancing because my wife is constantly telling me to go easy on the gyrating when we are dancing in public. "Settle down, Swivel Hips" is her warning to me.
Of course, when the dancing is private, she utters no such warning. ;)

I think one of the "moments" that sealed the deal on my love of New Orleans was attending the Fais Do Do at Tip's on Sunday afternoon during my first trip down. Bwahaha!! "Typewriter dance": howled out loud in the library. On that vein, I recall Joe Cocker explaining that his dance wasn't just a spaz attack; one hand was playing "air piano" & the other "air bass"
Watching dance lessons is like looking at food, doesn't acomplish anything. Not a lecture hall, you need theory AND PRACTICE. Just start trying to do what the instructor says, maybe you'll get it, if the teacher is good, you'll get corrected & keep working on it & improving (Oh yea, holding a woman while digging on zydeco isn't really WORK!).
Moon: Have to be drunk? MANY years ago, I first started dancing while drunk at HS dances. Then I discovered dancing itself got me high, didn't need no steenkin' booze, quitting was a breeze. Try it...(dancing I mean, feel free to imbibe!)

Thanks for the heads up... I definitely don't want to compete with sacred watermelon sacrifice, so that time is out (sorry Neen & Lar).
Let me get back to the cubebs & recalculate. Wish I remembered to bring my cube printout, old fashioned paper is so much easier than using this website.
Amazing how fast this thread went to page 4 after a weekend off

Alls good. Nina and I will be at the Fest both weekends, so anytime that works for you will be grand. We tend to spend alot of time at the Fa-do-do stage, so hope to link there.
I am SO looking forward to this!!

OK. 2nd weekend, about 12:30 Thursday, just before Creole Zydeco Farmers. Set in stone.
Still thinking about 1st weekend, before Zydepunks is a good time but I have no idea if they're a danceable zydeco band (the suffix "punks" scares me!)
Any opinions on this one?
Another option is before Hadley Castille on the first Sat. but I'm considering maybe going to Fest International that day...
I wish I had the computer skills to put my picture on here, so if anyone saw me we could do an impromptu lesson... oh well

If someone has a car that is going to Luizza's before fest they could park and crank it or ir Luizza's has a CD player we could always do a meet up and dance outside.;)
Just don't make it Sunday as I has to be there real early for Lena

Good try, Ross... I think "Zydeco Queen" Mona Wilson has already copyrighted
"Zydaerobics", and she's a tough cookie.
But if you don't charge $$$ she has no case!

Are you serious? I was joking about the "patented" part, but there is no greater workout than slapping on some chanka chank and going berserk for an hour in your living room!

Not sure about the copyright, but yes indeed, Mona has a "zydeaerobics video".

Thats a good workout alright, but you oughta try dancing 10 hours or so with different ladies in your arms each time... stamina!!!

JUst checked out Zydepunks website, interesting but not what I would call dance zydeco.
I'd rather have a good z-band after lesson so folks could practice their new skills. I'll keep looking

So, what are the pre-requisites? Do you need basic dance moves? A marginal sense of rhythm?

It's easy Swag. You must simply possess your "Intro to zydeco 101" certficate and be able to run around shirtless like Shamat. You'll have no problem qualifying!

Sorry about that. The reason you're confused is that I am too. Yes, 2nd weekend is set. I'm still pondering Weekend1, bear with me cause I'm making this up as I go along.

Prerequisites? I guess I'll skip the PH.D & 15 years seniority this time.... yep, a minimal sense of rhythm helps a lot.
Just give it a try, if you mess up no one will freak out

I finally made up my mind. I had to google Joe Hall to find out who he is, & turns out he plays zydeco....
SO: 1st Friday, about noon, before Joe Hall
2nd Thursday, about 12:30 before Creole Zydeco Farmers
I would be happy to give quicky lessons to anyone who runs into me any other time, unless I'm busy.Or e-mail me to set something up. Maybe I can get someone to help me put my picture up here so you can recognize me, but don't hold your breath, Carolina Beadhead tried to coach me, no luck

Heya, Rev - what a lot of folks have found that works most successfully is to host their photos on Photobucket (which is free and very user-friendly, even for those in the analog set), it can even help you edit it to be avatar size for uploading to the CP area of your profile here. :D
I'm also happy to help, if you'd like. :)

Well I walked around in front of the FDD stage and called out if anyone wanted to learn zydeco, no takers. No biggy, I went to Lafayette & Breaux Bridge both Saturdays, where everyone knows how, and danced myself silly.
There's a zydeco fest somewhere in the USA starting now just about every weekend thru July: San Diego, Houston, Daphne( Alabama), then a bunch on the East Coast.
Google Arn Burkhoff's website for details
