View Full Version : Guitarists & Bass Players-A big favor to ask

All you guitarists and bass players out there....I have a big favor to ask. Anyone with used strings. Instead of tossing them in the trash, would you save em for me?? I use the strings and the ball ends to make jewelry. Desperately need the big bass ball ends but I use it all. I would be happy to meet you somewhere during JF to take those puppies off your hands.

I do sell them, so far to friends, and by word of mouth. My website is being created right now. However all the pics are on my myspace. The url is myspace dot com forward slash bluesbaby4 You will have to request to be a friend, unfortunately to see the pics, but a girl has to be careful with all the crazies trolling myspace these days.
They are made with base metals (nickel, brass, bronze) and some people do have reactions to them. However I have this coating I can put on it that shields the skin from that.

man... when I think about how many string sets that June Yamagichi must go through in the dozen days around Fest and then you multiply that my the # of guitarists & bassists playin' in NOLA during the same period - my conclusion is that you've GOT to introduce yourself to some guitar techs while you're in town and you could get a year's-worth in a few short days! oh, and if you can over having to sit stage-side at some cool shows, those guys always have the best seats in the house. I'm sure you've seen the charity bracelets on Jambase from famous players' strings that are braided and crimped - how about a NOLA celebrity version with some % benefitting a worthy cause... hmmmmm.... raffle prize?
After being vilified for killing a perfectly good vaccuum cleaner in my younger days I'm a LOT more sanitary about my string changes now - making damn sure the clipped ends and ball-ends wind up in the trash, but I'll keep an envelope handy for ya and throw my cast-offs. Too bad I hardly ever play it anymore, but I was using D'Addario's (?) on my archtop that had color-coded ball-ends to keep people from messing up the string changes... those were very cool!

Hey bb,
My friend Dennis uses colored bass strings and he's saved some for me. Do you want some of them? He has hot pink and teal for sure, and maybe some reds.
I make jewelry from used strings, too.

I checked the Relix "wear your music" site, and huh? No NOLA musicians represented! I could'a sworn that George Porter, Jr. had a bracelet at one time, but it looks wide open. How about doin' a myspace campaign (most players have a myspace) and offer to collect the strings from the bands? I have a feeling they'd love to help & have their strings worn. I'm thinking of some guys who probably go through a boatload of strings during Jazzfest - help fill out this list, y'all!
George Porter, Jr.
Bert Cotton
Tony Hall
Nick Daniels
Ian Neville
Anders Osborne
Papa Mali
the afore-mentioned June Yamagishi
Brian Stoltz

Oh, you guys are sooo awesome! What a great brother/sisterhood of music lovers!! YOu are giving me some great ideas for getting some strings.
I have gone to several shows mostly local less-well-known performers and they tell me the idea is great, but timing is everything. THey say, dang I just threw away a buncha strings. And the killer of all time, well, bass players almost NEVER change their strings. ***sigh***. Its tough sometimes. Anyway, I think that Jazzfest has to be a veritable candy store of strings and ball ends for me!
***And ladies, please take a deep breath before reading any further***
I have a bracelet made from some Tab Benoit strings he gave me when he broke them during a performance last year! **Should I start the bidding??***

I wasn't being misogynistic (I hope!) when I didn't put any women on my short list, but I couldn't help but think that they take better care of their stuff and don't go through as many strings :) and as far as bass players go - the more solo's and poppin' & slappin' the better! They go through strings like guitar players do.
How about this idea for next year? drop off a pre-paid mailer during jazzfest with players that seem simpatico, and have'em just put some, or a lot, of strings in and return it to ya. btw - I thought your necklace was a lot more inventive than the bracelets I'd seen before... thanks for sharing!

All you really need to do is track down the player's guitar tech and they will cut them off of the guitar and give them to you. You might have to tell them the day before, but these guys & gals that play professionally change their strings about every other day.

YYR! I used to tech, and my former bandmate's brother does the guitars for "a famous all-woman band whose name sounds like a Hullabaloo dancer" as well as others - they go through BOXES... and guitar tech's, like lighting folks, get all excited when anyone, let alone women, notices them. Give'em an ego boost! Better yet, buy'em a beer - have you been to a Sonny Landreth show? That poor guy that tech's for him burns more calories in one set at the Rock'n'Bowl than I do in a day.
OK, OK, I'll go change some strings already! LOL

It's a great necklace.
good proportions.
How long is it?
One of the things I've found when making necklaces is that everyone has a different preference for where it falls...so I use those chain like end thingies - that the hook goes into - unless I am making it for someone specific and we discuss ahead of time. (I only make them as a hobby - not professionally).

I measured it from the inside and it is 17". But I was looking at it in the mirror, and an extension of 5 add'l inches would be pretty easy to do I think. I could do some kind of braid from smooth strings that I could link to the back of it. And I think it would still look good that way.

Sorry, can't seem to get the pic any smaller. Photobucket keeps timing out on me. BTW, I didnt notice this time when snapping the pic, but the coiled string on the necklace does slide along the smooth inside string, that's why there is a space btwn the coil and the stone. That falls back into place when it's worn.

you are on a roll !!!
When you go to photobucket click on the image you want - it will show up in a box that has tabs at the top - to do all sorts of edits.
Three tabs over from the RIGHT - is one that says resize. Choose the size that is 320X320.
or website size (320 X 240) - i think it depends on the original proportions of the photo.
That should be big enough to see everything and not too huge for the board.

Bluesbaby, that's some beautiful jewelry, girl.
Can't wait 'til next year when we see some of your work in the Threadhead Raffle for The New Orleans Musicians Clinic. I know you will come up with some special creations!
BTW, there are some gorgeous pieces of jewelry in the current raffle, everyone!
If you're reading this message, you can still buy some more raffle tickets! Only a few more hours 'til it's all over until 2009. :)

Thanks, sweetie. And count on it. I love the idea of putting some of my stuff in the raffle. I would have been happy to do it this year, but didnt know about it in time.

Well, R.T. thank goodness for that. I have to admit, it would have kind of creeped me out if I learned that you had nipple rings or something. (oops can I say that?)

Well, my motto is: 'Normal' is a relative term!
Look at Leon Medica of LeRoux. He is quite...shall I say....interesting looking. But the nicest, and truly most normal well-grounded musicians I think I ever met.

Well, I have to agree with you , unless the piercing artist missed the right ear by accident and got your tongue instead. :)

My friend got so drunk in Reno last weekend that she was all set to visit a tattoo parlor across the road from the casino.
Of course, we'd all have gone with her, but TG she passed out before she got there!
