View Full Version : Need Ideas - Lost Our Babysitters

My wife and I were planning on coming down to NOLA this year with our son. He was born on May 3rd last year, so we missed the Fest for the first time in a long time.

We were going to bring my wife's parents with us to mark the little guy's first birthday, as well a little evening babysitting.

Unfortunately, they're not going to be able to come and it'll just be my wife, me and baby makes three.

Daytime won't be affected much, since we planned on having the baby with us at Jazzfest, but I feel like our evenings are pretty well screwed.

Any suggestions for baby-friendly early-evening activities? We'll hit Lafayette Park on Wed. night to see Marcia Ball. Unfortunately, Ingrid's bash is also Wed. this year, so I don't think we'll be able to do both.

Also, any good baby-friendly restaurants>

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, we'll be splitting our nights (good thing Irma Thomas is playing three times over the 2nd weekend!).

Any parents in the same boat want to get together? :-)

We'll be there with our 3 month old! I think we're planning on Ingrid's, which is Thursday this year, and Marcia on Wednesday. I too have been looking for/thinking of baby-friendly ideas, and we'll probably split some time for going out, and we've had some wonderful babysitting offers, including from our lovely hosts the bjamns! Meeting up with other parents and little ones would be nice, what do you have in mind?

Not sure. This whole cancellation thing is only a few hours old, so I haven't thought through a lot of it. Our baby is finally on a schedule (it only took 11 months before he was sleeping through the night!), so I'm not sure how late we can keep him out, etc.

If you're going to Marcia at the Park, perhaps other parents and kids are, as well. Maybe we can do a meetup.

Awesome! Do you think it'll be baby-friendly?

My guess is yes but I've never been. I'm sure someone who has will jump in here.

For sure! I think Ingrid's own little one has been seen running around.

Natalie's been sleeping through the night since 2 months, we are lucky lucky!

OK. Looks like we're definately doing Ingrid's Bash. Since we'll probably head straight there from the Fest (Deacon John plays til 7), is there an easy way to get to Ingrid's from the Fairgrounds, or do I just cab it? And is getting a cab from the Fairgrounds realistic?

That takes care of Wed and Thurs. Any suggestions for Fri, Sat and Sun?

Amy Winette
04-15-2008, 12:05 AM
For cabs, exit to Mystery Street! Otherwise you'll wait forever. Ingrid's is a couple of miles up Canal from downtown, that's really all I know . . .

Amy Winette

I don't know about the other days, I was thinking Rock N Bowl but it's probably too loud, I don't know if it would be too crowded and crazy to stroll little one along Frenchman at night and listen to the music from outside . . .

Well, it 1.75 miles from The Sauvage St. gates to Miss Ingrid's chateau, an even 2 miles from the cab stand on Gentilly. If you wait until the fest is over, you could easily wait the better part of an hour in line to get a cab, which can be okay if you don't have an infant in tow in the heat (Papa Mali was right behind me one night last year). If you want to get a cab without the wait, leave at 6 and get to Ingrid's, which starts at that time. It's a bit of a walk, but it's still light enough at six to do that if you want. The streetcar runs down Carrollton to Canal and you can get off there and take one going north on Canal to Ingrid's, but after the fest, the ones leaving the fest are packed tight and you can wait there as well. How bad do you want to see Deacon John?

Hello fellow festers!

I am a 30 year old professional nanny coming in from San Francisco with the family I work for first weekend of the fest and staying through to do some Katrina relief work during the weekdays. I plan on not going out on Monday and Tuesday night to save up energy for the rest of the week. So Im available if you need childcare anytime after about 6 or 7pm. I am registered with an agency in San Francisco so I am all legit- trustlined, fingerprinted,TB tested and all. Go out for a night on the town, you deserve it! Your little ones will be safe and have fun with me!

Yeah, you might want to put me on the "do not call this babysitter" list too. I'm used to taking care of a dog, so unless your chillun eat kibble twice a day and will poop outside, I'm probably not your guy...

Haven't tried the Dimetapp and duct tape technique yet Barb, but I'm curious: on what end of the baby do you apply the duct tape?

Rock n Bowl during JF is almost definately going to be too crowded. Walking Frenchmen might be an option, but does anyone know of any evening outdoor music on Friday-Sunday?

I think we should definately have a baby meetup. There have got to be other Threadheads in this boat besides me and Amy. C'mon people, where y'at?

We're coming, with a 2yo and the newbie- she's gonna be 9 weeks by then. We're doing Marcia at the park, and taking the sprouts to the fairgrounds along with gramma. Well, she'll be where we are 99% of the time.
I believe our big night out is gonna be rockNbowl on Saturday. Other than that, I think it's a whole lot of fairgrounds during the day, dinner, then play it by ear, but not anything too exciting.
This is our third kid-fest, and it's different, but still fun. Fewer hangovers...

You could always hang at Jackson Square and see who is playing free in the street. Sometimes you can catch great music there.

I'm trying to think of any restaurants/clubs that have patio seating, where you and the baby could hang out and still hear music without it being too loud, but can't think of any offhand. Anybody have suggestions?

The Maple Leaf has that nice patio in back, or it did the last time I was there. Dimetapp and duct tape! Damn, I wish I'd thought of that.

YYR Oz, always thinking! But I think I like the lagniape idea :)

Dinner with outdoor patio and music sounds good! Pat O's too crowded and no music.

Stephanie, I'm wondering how little ones do at the fairgrounds as it's so hot! I have a little covered inflatable wading pool I thought I'd bring, and swimmie diapers.

We have a baby backpack with a sunshade, and we'll make sure to spend a lot of time in the Grandstand or misting tents.

Hopefully, it won't be unbearably hot.

Pat O's may be a good spot during the day. At night, probably not.

Amy- yeah, it's pretty hot. I second the mist tents, and we spent a fair amount of time over in/by the grandstand. (and if you're at the zatarain's stage when they're cooking, you can snag a taste)

We just make sure everybody's appropriately hydrated, and wing it. We kinda just make it up as we go along anyway, though, so I might not be full of the best advice. We travel really light, too- the smaller they are, the easier that is. Boobs and diapers are our only requirements for the little one, you know?
We stash as much as we can into one backpack diaper bag and hope for the best. Usually it's great, sometimes we have to get a little MacGyver-ish.

We've always been fest nomads, though. Wandering may become more difficult this year with both kids.

Another thing we're doing Wednesday morning is Rosetree Fest at Rosetree's studio -- beer, mimosas, mufalettas, etc. I think it'll work for little Nat in a stroller, I'm not sure about kids that are walking with all that beautiful glass!

I say we start with a meet up at Wednesday in the Square!

Gotcha! We're campers, so we're going to be even more heavily packed than usual -- we've got a big offroad type stroller (it's got Zydeco in the name, how can we not bring it?) and bjorn for any wandering . . . We've got a mini-van and a great parking space lined up, plus brass passes to be able to get in & out if we need to (not that I've ever gone out after entering the fairgrounds).

When my son was a baby we carried him many times to Jazz Fest. It was easier than what we thought. Jazz Fest was no problem we could always find shade and we left a little earlier to avoid the crowds.

At night we would go out to dinner for a couple of hours and we used a service called "We Sit Better" My wife just loved it and trusted the babysitters. I know there is also a service called "Care.com" in New Orleans that gets great reviews.

There are plenty of outside restaurants that are baby friendly.

You will have a great time and your baby will too you just might have to do it a little different.

I have a friend who rents a stable opposite the acura stage.

If you need a place to store some "Nati necessities."
Kitty would be more than happy to help. She sets up right along the track and has a Jazz Fest/POW flagpole (left of the MOMS camp).

Alcohol content in milk is the same as in blood, and it leaves the milk in the same way, so it's ok to drink and nurse. Yes, I asked the lactation consultant at the breastfeeding class I took. The other moms in the room gave me 'the look'. It was clear I was more fun than them, anyhow.

A glass of wine at dinner definately mellows out both mother and child at bedtime. Our doctor has told us there's absolutely no harm, as long as you practice moderation.

I think the Zoo thing for kids is the first weekend. The Zoo thing for adults is the second weekend. Too bad. That would've been a great thing to do with the baby one night.

too late for this year but one of my staff at the YMCA our NEENEE ... babysitter supreme and yes grandma extrodinaire teased me today? ( the kidless one) about knowing anyone who needed a Jfest nanny. Said OH MY IF I HAD KNOWN six months ago Nee .. So maybe for 2009 we should think about setting up a prearranged referenced bonded childcare provider...

Wow.
Savanna stayed in NICU for a month. Actually a good way to ease into parenthood!

I just gotta say, my niece was born 1 lb 5 oz (no typo there). NICU/SCN for 68 days. Now she's a typical 2 year old. My brother blogged an update everyday - quite the journey. I have MUCH respect for any parent to go through all that.

Someday, I'll bring her to JazzFest! (and her parents, too!)

I'll be in the same boat on first weekend. Planning on hitting the Frenchmen area for some early music that can be heard on streets. Also most pubs allow children. Anywhere with a poker machine will not. I'm looking at it as a challenge to see NOLA in a new light. We're doing tea parties, voodoo museum, carriage rides, street car, perfumerie, pattiserrie....other fun stuff. Drinks are to go after all!
