I heard from the fine folks at St. Augustine's Church in the Treme today that they will have a jazz mass featuring the Treme Brass Band on Sunday, 4/27, at 10 a.m.
Sorry -- no info on second weekend!
Should be a good time if you're functioning early on Sunday. The music, spirit and crowd at these jazz masses is really something special!

Actually this sounds fantastic to me. I am planning--or at least registered and hoping--to run the 5K race that morning at 8:30, so I should be up and finished with the race in plenty of time. Can you tell me anything about the dress for these services though? Also, about how long do they last? I am a fairly regular church-goer, but I've never been to a jazz mass. I would want to head straight to Fest from mass, and I don't want to show up in shorts, t-shirt and sandals and look like an idiot (if I can avoid it). I'd also like to know how long to plan to be there so I can tell the rest of the folks in my krewe what to expect. Thanks.

Wow sounds something that is right up Priestboy's alley....I was planning on running that race as well Lit so I don't know about timing it all in...how's that for FOMS----a road race and a Jazz Mass---only in New Orleans ;) I would imagine it gets a pretty casually dressed crowd from out of town but you are talking to someone who goes to church in shorts all the time during the summer

Lit,
We attended the mass in honor of Ed Bradley last year. Not sure if it is was completely typical. My wife and I wore casual clothes (all four knees covered!) but also had shorts and T's in our back-packs to change into for the Fest. You'll at least have to take the race bib off before you go! ;)
Recollection is that the mass itself lasted about an hour with some fabulous music, then there was a quick second-line led by Treme Brass Band to a reception area where food by Leah Chase was served and a tent was set up for Dr. John and Bo Dollis to perform. We got to the Fest around 12:30.
The church, which is quite historic, was facing possible closure so my sense was they were doing their best to pull in some extra congregants and cash. Best money I spent at last year's JF might have gone into their collection plate.
Not sure if they're on stronger footing now, but I don't think anything as elaborate is planned this year. Should still be a blast, though. I hope some locals have much more info!

Thanks for the info. We'll have a rental car, so if I can convince any of the other folks in my krewe I should be fine both on time and clothes--and a quick shower in between the race and the service.

I heard about this on WWOZ last year before I arrived. Incredible! I've never felt such a sense of community like this. I came there in my shorts, t-shirt and folding chair and felt very welcomed. This past Feburary I attended mass after running the Mardi Gras Half Marathon. Highly recommend that you attend mass there if you can.

Wow... this sounds great! Do you know if they have communion under both forms? (Hey, ever the Catholic girl, ya know?)
