I was very tempted to buy tickets for the show in Boston, but thery're being sold by TicketBaastard. The tickets are $60.00 and they want to add almost $18.00 in fees on top of that.

Jaco
Loved him. A musical genius, the circumstances surrounding his demise were as disturbing as Sam Cooke's.:( Check him out on Charlie "Bird" Parker's "Donna Lee". Sublime.

I second that - "Donna Lee," with Jaco joined only by Don Alias on congas, is one of the great tracks from his solo debut. Alias, sadly, died two years ago. The harmonics-heavy "Portrait of Tracy" is also a brilliant piece from that album.
While we're on the subject, anyone wanting a terrific overview of Jaco's music and career should check out Bill Milkowski's "definitive" biography, which was updated a couple of years ago, I think.
And about Jaco's death - yes, very disturbing. Some have portrayed it as sort of the inevitable end of a doomed jazz genius, etc. Pat Metheny once told me in an interview that he resented and rejected that explanation, saying that yes, Jaco had enormous emotional/psychological problems (bipolar), compounded with addiction issues, but the fact is that he died because a huge bouncer beat the ---- out of Jaco. The guy, Luc Havan, basically slammed Jaco's head into the sidewalk until he died.
Havan, Jaco's murderer, was convicted only of involuntary manslaughter (prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder) and he served less than EIGHT MONTHS for his evil deeds. He says that he landed a punch on Jaco's head and claims that Jaco died after falling to the ground, but unbiased observers said that Jaco's extensive injuries could not have resulted from a mere fall.
Havan as recently as November 2006 was working as a real-estate agent in Palm Beach County, according to a story (http://www.browardpalmbeach.com/2006-11-30/news/jaco-incorporated/full) in the Broward New Times. According to sources I've seen online, Havan lives in Lake Worth (South Florida). It's a crime that he virtually got away scot-free, and it's pretty disgusting that he didn't at least leave the state (or, better yet, leave the U.S.)
