Alright, I apologize for being so late in posting this. It has been a crazy year so far. That being said, the FestAid site has been updated for the 2008 volunteer opportunities, and we are ready to start signups. The opportunities for this year are as follows:

Second Harvest:
This opportunity is only available for Tuesday, April 29th. They are closed on Wednesday to conduct inventory.

Habitat for Humanity - Musician's Village:
We have 30 slots reserved for Tuesday through Thursday.

Animal Rescue:
Please sign up with ARNO directly. You can access their site through FestAid's webpage.

Acorn Housing:
Acorn needs assistance answering the phones and making phone calls to homeowners. There are two slots available Monday, April 28th through Friday, May 2nd.

Please go to www.festaid.com and sign up for the opportunities. Because of our tight time frame, please sign up promptly if you're interested. I need to update numbers as soon as possible, so that I do not take volunteering slots away from others. Sorry again for the late notice. I look forward to seeing and volunteering with you all again.

Thank you for giving back to New Orleans!

Huck

Thanks for the info, and the email! I've been waiting for your update.

Just a note: I tried sending an email volunteer email address on their site (mwingerter <at> secondharvest <dot> org), but got an bounce-back with another email (dmuse <at> secondharvest <dot> org, which bounced back stating "no such user". I will call them in the morning and try the direct-connect approach.

One year (2006), we took food and water out to stations in the 9th Ward. It was pretty tough dirty work, and it took all day. It felt amazingly rewarding though. The next year (2007), we volunteered for about 4 hours at the shelter cleaning out the kitty cages. And came home with a new kitty :) That was very rewarding too!

Huck,

In your opinion, are any of the volunteer opps suitable for a family with an almost 8 year-old and an almost 6 year-old?

Bill,

I am not sure what you mean. Were you emailing Second Harvest directly or were you giving an email for the FestAid website? If you are trying to sign up for Second Harvest, you can do that through www.FestAid.com, assuming you want to volunteer on Tuesday. Otherwise, if you are looking to work on another day, you probably would do best to call Second Harvest and talk to someone. Here is their contact page: http://www.no-hunger.org/about_us/contactus.htm

I believe you want to talk with Devoney.

I can't make it down until Wednesday morning. I am going to try and get in two half days of volunteering. It was getting more and more challenging for my wife with the three boys when I was gone for the entire week. So I didn't even try to get Patry tickets. Are there any still available? Just kidding. :D

Habitat is a definite no as it is a construction site. Second Harvest is a possibility as I know they have school aged kids volunteer there all the time. I can ask if they have an age restriction. ARNO is also a possibility since you would be in the car driving to feeding stations. Because you need to sign up directly with them, I would ask them their opinion. Here is ARNO's website:

CTH,

I was using the email on the Second Harvest website. I did call just now, and was able to sign up over the phone, so all is good!!!

I am looking forward to meeting you sometime during JF. I will be there for both weekends, and will try to make to some of the meetups I've been reading about.

Hey Jordon, the folks at Acorn were very cool.Give them a call and I'll bet they will let the kids hang around or put them to work cleaning up the yard.

There are no opportunities on Monday as Habitat does not work on that day. I will review and revise that.

I might not take kids out to the feeding stations as those areas can be a little rough, a lot of the yards are pretty overgrown, broken glass, etc. I think kids would be fine at the shelter, a big part of the volunteer day is playing and cuddling with the animals (just don't let em hold the slightly feral ones that will scratch). However, you may come back with a new pet.
