It has been suggested that the spider sammich is *the* threadhead choice of food at the fest and that you are not part of the team if you don't vote for it in Swag's jazz fest tourney.
NOT SO MY FRIENDS!! There are plenty of us who like Crawfish Monica though it's got the biggest line, who enjoy the BNAs at the Acura stage, who like, that's right, Bourbon Street. It doesn't have to be the classiest thing in the world, if you LIKE it, vote for it (based on the LINE a lot of people do!!) ;)
Mmmm, look at it, just tell me that's not making you drool? :)

While I like the spider sammich, don't get me wrong, it's just a deep fried crusty thing in a roll! While the monica is a melange of cream and butter and sauce and noodles and crawfish tails . . .
Moon, you've gotta try it before you reach that conclusion. I'm not a pasta at lunch (or breakfast for that matter!) person usually either, but crawfish monica is simply transcendent.

I agree with you - I tried it once, it seemed like really creamy mac & cheese with overwhelming amounts of garlic. DIdn't do anything for me.
But I'm not a fan of the spider sammich either.

Have you tried the streudel? I love the crawfish bread first thing to help with any lingering hangover. All of that dough is great.
But the streudel is heaven. Light and flakey with a delicious crawfish-in-sauce filling.

Bluesgirl, Im from MD too, and worked in the kitchen of a popular seafood restaurant in B-More for many years ... we would cut the face of, lift up the ends of the shell, scrape the lungs and intestines out, egg dip, and flour, and fry
never heard of anyone not cleaning em before frying them, although I suppose you could ... seems a little nasty to me

After daze of festing I loves me some of that fruit salad they sell with the strawberry lemonade-used to be at congo square. And I love those apple and pecan pies from the lady who used to be next to the fruit salad at congo square but last year was close to monica.

I know this is a softshell po-boy v. crawfish monica debate I would like to interject and also get some props for good 'ol oyster po-boys and the more traditional crawfish.
In the first case.... there is absolutely nothing wrong , and everything right with fried and sandwich joined in culinary bliss. (sorrry Amy).
In the second, while crawfish, cheese and pasta is a trinity of all that can be right with n'awlins cuisine it would never be possible without plain ole....

absolute JF food crush...gotta have it, every year...haven't had the spider sammich yet...guess i need to try it in 2007...along with the quail gumbo
i am in NO WAY done sampling and surveying the cornacopia of goodies...cannot begin to pick a favorite, unless it's hedged as "favorite so far"...each year yields a new "OMG that's the best thang i ever put in my mouth" candidate for me (shut it, ya oinkers!)
2006 was the fried oyster po boy, especially when they subbed spinach when they ran out of cabbage...yummy yummers!
2005 was the spinach/zuchini/crawfish bisque
2004 was the veggie spring rolls, dipped in gumbo...skipped the peanut sauce...i finally located the booth in a faraway part of the fairgrounds on the last day...this won not really for scrumptiousness but for lightness...it was unbearably scorching hot that year and i can't stomach really rich food in that heat...i existed mostly on strawberry smoothies during the day that year....

Yes I understand bro! I have a butter fat, gluten and crustacean deficiency problem, so I am forced to down a serving or so every day at fest. What I have found is that the goop is basically a soupy rip-off of fettuccine alfredo (but with rotini?) with the crawfish added. And you know what they call fettuccine Alfredo? "Heart attack on plate". What does that make this stuff: “A Cup of Cardiac Arrest”?

A properly prepared softshell crab does not have eyes/face/innards. I oughta know since I've been eating them almost as long as I've been eating solid food. The spider sammichs at Fest are delicious (especially with a dash or two of Crystal)...but then again, I love the Monica, too (also with a dash or two of Crystal). BTW, softshells can also be sauteed if fryin's isn't your thing...they're yummy either way...Also, I used to love the softshell crawfish po' boys at Fest till they stopped selling them a few years back...mmmmmmmmmmmmm

You can tell just from the look of it that it's all overcooked. That's the problem with serving pasta to 40,000 people, you just can't cook it al dente. Pasta is made to be cooked one lb at time or less...anymore and you get...well crumbly soggy rotini.
But now a good fry cook...he or she can hit the mark time after time, one delicious SoftShell Crab Sammitch after another. Plus you get a pickle.

I'm in Mobile Alabama, and years ago some bar got the idea if they'd serve up spicy crawfish to folks, they'd buy more beer. It worked. Lines were out the door. Other bars picked up on the idea. And the bars tend do it on different nights, so you can go to The Garage on Sunday, Bojangles on Monday, Heroes on Tuesday, The Silver Horse on Thursday, and enjoy free spicy crawdads with your cold suds. It's a wonderful life.
And if you haven't done it yet, vote Crawfish Monica. Thank you.

"The term "po' boy" was coined in a New Orleans restaurant owned by Benny and Clovis Martin, a former streetcar conductor. In 1929, during a four-month strike against the streetcar company, Martin served his former colleagues free sandwiches. Martin's restaurant workers jokingly referred to the strikers as "poor boys", and soon the sandwiches themselves took on the name. In Louisiana dialect, this is naturally shortened to "po' boy."
In his book The Art of the Sandwich, Jay Harlow suggests that the name "po' boy" comes from the French pour boire or "peace offering," which stems from when men would come home after a night on the town, bringing an oyster loaf as a peace offering.
Harlow's account seems to conflate two other stories about the origins of the term "poor boy". The French word pourboire literally means "to drink" and translates as the tip one leaves a serving person or a delivery boy. These tips could be used to buy a small sandwich, which became known as poor boys. A variation on this story is that the tips were "for the boy" rendered in a Franglais mixture as "pour le boy".
A Peace Maker was the name for an oyster loaf--a whole loaf of French Bread, split, hollowed out, and buttered, loaded with fried oysters and garnished with lemon juice and sliced pickles. That was the traditional peace offering upon returning home late."

Jazz Fest itself enhances the whole Softshell Experience...especially when you are from an area like mine where hots and hamburgers, gyros (maybe some steamed clams at a Fireman's carnival) and some other stuff you wouldn't want to eat are the only food you are a likely to find at festivals. We have at least three good festivals here, including a upcoming Jazz Fest, but I have to remind any one who's been to New Orleans...don't come hungry.
But in my travels as part of the food fights here, I met a softshell lover who keeps a ticket marked "CRAB" in his wallet all year round, so he can pull it out from time to time and remember as he keeps waiting for the gates to open. He is my new hero.

Alright Crawfish folks, where y'at?? Last round we had 35 people vote for Crawfish Monica and this round only 18 have. Where are the 17 other people? Please hop on over there and vote, we've only got a few hours left!! Thank you :)
Okay, I know I'm being rather dim . . . but I haven't been able to figure out how to get to all of these elections.
How do I find the new one for Cochon de Lait Po Boy vs. Crawfish Monica?
Any help is appreciated to help this clueless kitten! :o

Fireworks? Hogwash! I suspect she intends to vote pasta, but being a gentleman, I took her right to polls, well maybe one little extra stop along the way.

Nope, Rosetree - I have not yet been to the polls on this one . . . and I won't lie, I'm rather torn between the options on this particular election - they're my two very favoritie fest food options.
Can I just vote like this:

Well, Kitten, we would love to have your vote, especially since the other side has already enjoyed that special honor once.
Why not share the love?
And have I mentioned that I love New Orleans so much that I have a cat named "Sazerac". And that he is eighteen years old and very healthy!

Great kitty, Michelino!!! Great name too . . . I would have named my kitty cat an excellent New Orleans name like that, but she already had an established moniker (Sam) when I adopted her from my brother. Also, Sam's almost as distinguished as Miss Sazerac at 15 years old - okay, not really, here she is displaying some of the lovely New Orleans christmas ornaments that I got at Santa's Quarters last month:

Love that face!
Sazzy is not without his problems, because of dwindling kidney function he needs subcutaneous injections of fluids at least three times a week. But when that became necessary, my wife worked with our vet and learned how to do it. He is a real trouper about sitting on her lap and getting a needle poked under his fur. Doesn't even run when he sees the IV bag comes out. But he just passed his latest geriatric exam with flying colors.

She's a cutie, even though she's decided that grooming that long fur isn't really worth much of her time - so she gets all matted up - and she won't let me groom her. sigh
My ex-husband I had had a kitty that had kidney issues and I had to give her the subcutaneous injections . . . isn't that fun??!
The funny thing about that was that the kitty didn't mind the injections as much as she did mind having to take pills. She'd sit still for the injection, but throw a kitty hissy fit when the pills came out!

Did I mention I tried a fried softshell crab over MG and it wasn't for me? Just tasted like anything else fried but with an extra kinda creepy crunch. I love crab MEAT but I'll pass on the shells. And I'm never gonna suck a crawfish head, nuh uh, unless there's money involved, then I might be adventurous ;)
