Hey folks, lots of good NY music coming up before liftoff. Here's a few listings (pardon the descriptions, they are from a music list to get friends and co-workers out to see music). I'll definitely be at the Campbell Brothers, Global Noise, Nadine Goellner, and The Tubes. I'm also leaning towards PGF, New Model Army and Lez Zeppelin. If any of you are going to any shows, let me know -- it just might give me the excuse I need to join you.
See you out or see you in Nola!
Thu 4/3 Victor Wooten @ Highline -One of the baddest bassists on the planet. I swear you'll think, "how does he make a bass do that?"
Thu 4/3 Bodeans @Irving Plaza - Solid, feel good rock band.
Thu 4/3 Bonerama @ Mexicali Blues- 4 trombones (1 electric), a tuba, drums and guitar that plays everything from funk to Led Zeppelin covers. How can you resist?
Fri 4/4 Big Sam's Funky Nation@ Sullivan Hall - Big Sam is a trombone force who's joy of playing is infectious
Fri 4/4 Danielia Cotton @ Cutting Room- Solid female rock vocalist with teeth!

Tue 4/8 Eric Hutchinson@ Mercury Lounge- Charismatic singer songwriter with clever lyrics and funny stories to tell. (7:30pm)
Wed 4/9 Tubes@ BB King's- My favorite band growing up. I can't resist!!! I'm going
Thu 4/10 Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra@ SOB's- combines highlife, jazz, funk, and traditional West African rhythms informed with messages of political and spiritual evolution
Fri 4/11 Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra@ Southpaw- combines highlife, jazz, funk, and traditional West African rhythms informed with messages of political and spiritual evolution

Let me know what you decide...I am torn but I can see PGF here a lot and also Rebirth...Mac is a different story....I really wanna see RRE but they are in Brooklyn and ticket bastard is really bad with that one....I don't know how those hippies can afford that shite...especially since they are a NJ band...things have really changed with them. One thing is...I can NEVER see them down here and I miss them...We will see RRE at CFF too. What to do???
We are thinking of Mac and Rebirth since it is at Blender...so let me know doll.

16th between 8th and 9th -- the Campbells are sacred steel -- pedal steel, laptop steel, guitar (gibson, I think), drums, bass and a powerful female vocalist (they vary, but I hope they bring Denise Brown). Eric Bibb is opening and although I have never seen him, I hear he is a treat in himself. The Highline does seated and SRO shows -- this one is a seated show. The sound is very good and the stage is quite high, so sightlines are pretty good. Drinks are very expensive, but the music is great. They ususlly start on time.
If you don't like the show, I'll trade you the price of your ticket for a beer at jazzfest -- that's how good they are!

I did see Victor Wooten last night, and while I'm not sure I got all of it (I'm still working up to jazz), what I did get was amazing. I kept wondering how all of them were doing what they were doing with instruments that I see regularly (except for Regi's guitar). I think I saw more notes played at that gig than I see at a whole weekend at jazzfest. He had a Morroccan fiddle player named Amir Ali who had an infectious smile and a great voice. He also had a great drummer with him who did a tune that is done by three drummers on Victor's new CD. The solo finished up like a finale at a fireworks show when he pulled out a pair of sticks with green light up tips and they turned all of the lights on stage down. I think every bassist within 100 miles was there. He really seems like a grounded guy and he shared the stage so generously, it reminded me of New Orleans gigs.

Don't forget Anders will be at Sullivan St, formerly the Lions Den on 4/19.
This also a shameless plug for my cousin's band Swampadelica, who'll be opening showing off the new CD that just got released this month.
Also, should be my first music appearance in a while, since I've been keeping a low profile lately. Hope to see some old friends at this one.

Jordan;
I'm planning on Campbells tonight; going to see Young Frankenstein first. Crazy that its seated show; but if standees far outnumber the sitters, have seen them take some tables away.

this was my plan too but I just found out it's a "seated" show. You think they're putting tables in the floor area? It's $65 a ticket so they can't be talking about the theater seats in back, can they? I have lost any ability to watch music from a sitting position so that's totally out of the question. they are selling standing room tickets ($40), do you think that's to stand off to the side by the bars that are on either side of the stage? Let's get together one way or the other though! I'd do Southpaw as well.

YYR, Cuzin Paul has been the bass player through every incarnation of Swamp for the past 10 years or so. And I like this one the best. Maybe I'll see you there. I haven't met too many of the T-heads, just a lot of the PDKK carry overs. Be good to meet some new krewe blood.

So the Campbells were their usual happy selves, and Eric Bibb really put on a nice opener. Only problem with the show was that it was so poorly attended -- maybe 40-50 people and a lot of them were friends of the band. They were complete professionals about it, but there sure was something missing from the atmosphere. I also miss seeing their other singer, Denise Brown -- Tiffany does a nice job, but Denise can really kick it.
They finished up with a Reverend Gary Davis tune "I heard the angels singing" (i think that was the song) with Eric sitting in with them. It was their best number of the night and worth the price of admission alone.
Hope some of you are there tonight for Christian Scott and Global Noize.

I am with ya on the "sitting down" thing. I can barely sit still when I am working...
Now what the heck are they thinking with seats at a Rebirth show? Reminds me of B.B's when they would force people to wiggle in their seats while most of the workers are dancing around on the sides....
So, let's decide what we will do....I am flying home to NYC tomorrow.

Since you asked -- the only people in the crowd that were under 40 were kids (12ish) who were with their over 40 parents. Fee started the show by bumming a cigarette from someone in the crowd and taunting us that he could smoke, in a ripped up suit with "Out of the Business ... into rock and roll" ripped off the suit and threw it into the crowd (one of the 12 year olds caught the pants). When he was done, his hair was down and he was in jeans and a Ramones tee shirt. Someone bought him his bottle of VO which he drank and shared with anyone who had a free glass. Soon after they played "What do You want from life" and he walked through the audience asking "only women with big boobs" what they wanted from life -- one answer was "for you to sign my right breast" so he did. He was flirting with another woman who was with an older guy and asked, who is this old f**k your father?" Anyway after a few more stabs at embarrasing people they finished the song. After the song he was pulling the microphone up on stage and said it was covered in alcohol so he ran his mouth up the cord -- even he was a bit disgusted.
Changed into the "She's a Beauty" circus hawker's outfit and told the story of where the song came from. Other costumes included a James Brown parody for "Tip of My Tongue", his head inside a TV for "No Way Out", a Trenchcoat for "This Town" the "QUAY" outfit (3 foot silver platform boots with silver tights a dildo stuffed down his leg and a blond punk wig), a bondage leather outfit complete with mask and assless chaps. He's not in the best shape, but you gotta give the guy credit for putting it all out there.
I don't mean to focus on all of the theatrics, but it is a large part of the show. He intros the songs really thoughtfully and is quite dynamic and after the show, steps out of character and is quite appreciative of the fan support.
The band was pretty sharp -- Roger Steen carried the band with really good guitar, Rick Anderson did a good job on bass, the drummer was a pretty talented NY guy they picked up (I've never seen a drummer with cymbals so high) and the keyboard player was not my favorite (although I've been spoiled by NO key players). I think they could have used a female backup singer, but Roger and the keyboard player did a good enough job.
Anyway, musically they were very solid -- I was expecting less. They had good solos, and were able to carry the gig while Fee was changing from outfit to outfit. The crowd was really into it and I had a great time. They also played (from the top of my head)-- Turn Me on, Don't want to wait anymore, Mondo Bondage, Boy Crazy and of course, White Punks on Dope and Talk to ya Later.

What shows you headed to next week-end? A bunch of us are meeting up for the Green Apple Festival on Sunday at Summer Stage.
HEY LBI, I am SO SORRY to say I am not making the Anders/Swamp show as I was bought a ticket to John Brown's Body and Panda so that is where I must go....don't I sound thrilled? No really....I do love JBB and probably would not get to see them much when down living in Nola so that is where I am headed.

Understand, go where the rhythm takes you. See ya down the line. For anyone else at Anders and Swamp hope to bump into you. I'll be the big guy with the grey hair and jeans. Easy to spot huh? Actually, I'll probably have a LSU shirt on and will be near by my cousin Paul, whose Swamp's bass player.

I DID make it to Swamp after all...I kept running (cabbing it) back and forth from Bowery to Sullivan all night long. I was beat by the time the night ended. Caught Anders too....what a trip!
John Brown's Body kicked butt...I had it perfectly timed between these two bars...
Heading back to Nola in about one hour. I have done my NYC time and now it is high time to head to FEST!
See everyone soon!
