Petunia's (817 St. Louis Street New Orleans, La) is real nice. I think they open around 8, might be a line during fest.
Mrs. Chill and I also like Cafe Beignet (334-B Royal Street or Bourbon) for a quick breakfast, also open at 8. The one on Royale has a nice outdoor patio.

I love Petunia's...Just ate there over St. Paddy's weekend. Yum!

Another good place is The Coffee Pot on St. Peter. Service is lacking but the food is good.

Clover Grill for good greasy diner/hangover food. :)

No trip to New Orleans is complete without the Old Coffee Pots Eggs Sardou, outstanding Calas and a conversation with Pearl. A breakfast to be savored..the service is always wonderful..slightly slow at times but such an amazing place.

i have a question about the coffee pot....years ago i had dinner there and was quite surprised when there was a $10.00 festival fee added to my check. i did not like the suprise at the end of the meal....and that particular night...service sucked. i'd like to give it another chance for breakfast though.

Sorry that happened to ya sista:( Doesn't happen for breakfast but I do hear for dinner they will just about make ya anything that is not even on the menu if ya ask.

A hint for breakfast...be there in the first 30 minutes or so cause that line sure get long!!! But the Eggs Sardou is worth the wait in my mind!

Side note to ya linza...Sure looking forward to meeting you sweets.

Here is my fearsome Foursome-

1) the Coffee Pot, no further explanation neeeded

2) Cafe Du Mond- have to go once for Beignets and Coffee

3) The Palace Cafe- I usually stay away from the Brennan's empire, but their Jazz brunch is heavenly and right on the way to the fairgrounds from the Quarter, good on a day when you are beaten up and need a little pampering and a Bloody mary served by a tuxedoed waiter, I get crabmeant cheesecake, bananas foster for breakfast, and some nice easy jazz warm up before the Fairgrounds! Call ahead and make sure they are open, I forget which day but I went last year and they were closed

4) Mother's is an experience like no other!

Good to see ya back here. It's been a while. Others have good suggestions for breakfast. If you want quick and not fancy, I like Mena's on Chartres. The Orleans Cafe that someone mentioned is good and close to there.

Another good brunch is at Mr. B's that is only on Sunday. We're already looking to start the first Sunday with a sazerac and some Grillades and Grits.

The only problem is that it starts at 11:00 and have to make for the Wetland Allstars at 2:00. A MUST SEE set!

what is sazerac and what is grillades?

Sazerac:

"This is the quintessential New Orleans cocktail. There are those who say this is the first cocktail, period. There's a lot of dispute over this, but it's certainly the first to appear in New Orleans, which has been acknowledged by many as the home of the cocktail."

Here's how you make one.

1 teaspoon of simple syrup (or 1 sugar cube or 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar)
3 - 4 dashes Peychaud's bitters
2 ounces rye whiskey (most New Orleans bars use Old Overholt)
1/4 teaspoon Herbsaint, a New Orleans brand of anise liqueur
(You may use Pernod, or some other pastis or absinthe substitute)
Strip of lemon peel

As for the grillades: If it's true to form, it's made with veal, cut into small squares and served in a gravy/sauce along with peppers, onions and celery.

what is sazerac and what is grillades?

Grillades (pronounced GREE-yahds) are made with Round Steak, of Beef or Veal, although you could use pork, cooked in a delicious cajun gravy. Usually served with grits. Here's a picture and a recipe:

Here's my tip: If you're anywhere near the Casino (in the CBD, edge of the Quarter), their breakfast brunch is a killer. Tons of food, no waiting, a reasonable price and you're in and out as fast as you want! It may not be Mothers (hell, what is?), but you'll have enough food in your belly to last until you make it to the Soft Shell Crab Poboy stand at the Fest....

For those who just want a light breakfast, maybe coffee or tea and a pastry, Royal Blend Coffee and Tea House is a nice, relaxing place to take in your morning. The shop is at the very back of a pretty courtyard and they have courtyard seating as well as indoor tables. For those of you into espresso drinks, chai, etc, it is a nice local shop. It's on Royal (surprise!) between Toulose and St. Peter, I believe.

the howard johnson's are right!!!!!!!!!!

and if i may join the chorus of chill,.. ta' diver,.. and jada,.. petunia's serves up a mighty fine breakfast and deserves top billin'... a lil' too formal and time consumin' for our fest mornin's though,.. unless ya' hit the pillow early the night before.......

personally,.. always try to sleep as late as possible durin' daze of fest.... pry the eyes open @ 10,.. hit the shower,.. flavor a bottle of water with vitamin b's,.. refill the tequila golden honey pots,.. make sure the clutch cargo kit is ready for anotha' day,.. and motor ova' to the fairgrounds by 11... then the real fun begins...

upon reachin' those hallowed grounds the daily brunch threesome must commence with that golden crispy fried eggplant covered in that heavenly crawfish sauce... the two other starter choices change with the mood,.. but i have found no betta' way to start the day than the aforementioned plant of egg at the fest itself.......

petunia's is saved for days in between and travel days.... we always save time for that last great taste on those otherwise very sad travel days...

a guy goes to the doctor because he hasnt been feeling 100%. doc checks him out, gives him a jar of pills and tells him to take one, 6 times a day, with a full glass of water.
guy asks the doc 'whats wrong with me?'. doc replies, 'you dont drink enough water'.

Seriously, I had good motivation. The first year I was on this bored I was so excited about actually meeting all these characters in person. So I religiously exercised (aerobics, abs of steel) every day except Sunday, I think. I ate salad almost EVERY NIGHT and brussel sprouts every Thursday night. I think lunch would be leftovers from whatever I cooked chicklet the night before. And I always ate a piece of fruit (mostly apples) and coffee for breakfast.

Oh yea, the salads would either have grilled chicken or grilled shrimp in them.

Hm....I'm right there on the diet, but that exercising every day. Just can't make that commitment. I hear ya' about meeting folks from the board in person. Last year was really the first year I could muster up the courage to actually introduce myself to anyone. Too funny. Yea, it was hard but my motivation made me stick it out. I didn't veer off of it at all. And no, you definitely can't keep up that pace for anything long term. That's why I always fail on my diets; I just get so tired of the pace and get burnt out and end up saying f it. :D

And I am so glad you did work up the courage, my csoul sista! Wish I could have spent more time with you, too. And yes, the threadheads are the most accepting, loving, big-hearted group of people ever! lol, some of them are almost like family now. :p

For some reason I thought I could lose 75# in one month, so I am on the salad/yogurt diet too. ;)

you can easily lose 2 pounds per day, no wait, that's 2 pounds per week.
5 pounds would probably give me 3 more pair of shorts that re-fit.

Southbeach. but you do have to stick to it for the first 2 weeks. once you kick your body's sugar/carb addiction, its pretty easy to stick to.

with insurance its about $25 for 30 pills. i dont take them all the time.
when i know i'm going to be out in the sun and/or dealing with a lot of physical or mental stress, i take 1/2 a pill per day. if i get a tingle. i up it to 1 per day.
i still use lip balm with a SPF, a wear a hat to shade my face.

i have used a combo of abreva & valtrex to stop a cold sore that already started. minor sore for 2-3 days, rather than duck lip for a week.
abreva works pretty well alone, if you start using it immediately.

Hi, Lis,

CDM is at 1039 Decatur St. You know where Jackson Square is and where the mules are parked, right? It's right across the street, if you're facing the river w/ the cathedral behind you.

As for parking, there are some lots down by the French Market. You can park down there and take a nice stroll through all the vendors.

a true newbie would not have recognized that as a newbie question.

i also recommend the parking lots on the other side of the french market. its easiest to get to them off Elysian Fields. if you see a street spot grab it - they have these new(er) meters scattered around. you pay at it and then put the ticket in your car window. if you dont pay to park in the 1/4, it may not be a legal spot. make sure you are no where near an intersection - they will ticket & tow.
study a map before you leave, it will help. mapquest or google some directions too.
sometimes you can exit the highway but not get back on in the same spot, and lots of 1-way streets, so make sure to ask for reverse directions.

If you do it, I would prolly go back to Esplanade while still in the Bywater/Marigny. If you haven't crossed the RR tracks by the time you cross over St. Claude, you'll have to walk over the overpass either at Claiborne or N. Galvez (too far). Come to think of it, I wouldn't make that walk, Chas. My office is in that neighborhood (the upper ninth ward) on Piety St and there is lots of "stuff" happening over there, all the time. The walk up Esplanade is very do-able, but I wouldn't cut through those neighborhoods on foot either. Do check out the street car routes at norta.com (http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/norta.com) as you can ride the Canal St./Riverfront line from Esplanade all the way around to the Art Museum and then walk the short hop to the Sauvage St. Gate (with a stop at Liuzza's.) Cheaper than a cab, lots to see and a fun way to start your day!
