To carry on blitzzzzzzzzzzz''''''''ssssssss food thread.
I have so many favorites, it's ridiculous.
If it's not too hot outside, the pheasant, quail and andouille gumbo rocks. Also got to have cochon du lait, caribbean fruit salad(after a week of festing), chocolate covered strawberries, catfish poboy, trout baquet and rosemint tea, half sweet, half unsweet please.
This year I'm gonna try the two fried softshell poboys, grilled livers, and crawfish, spinach and zucchini bisque.
It's almost here!!!!!!!!!

One word......
CRACKLINS!!!
:D
OK, that's out of the way....Prejean's PQA gumbo comes in a very close second. Boudin balls are a must.
I'm also gonna try the grilled livers (breakfast on Friday with my cracklins) and the duck po-boy......and then it's wide open depending on my mood! ;)
REMEMBER: the softshelled craw po-boy sucks, so don't even try it. I expect to see NO ONE in line!

Seafood Au Gratin is back this year and so am I! Then the pheasant/quail gumbo and soft shell poboys. Might try the spinich/oyster salad this year & the Cajun duck poboy. May try the chicken livers & hope they're not as salty as French Qtr Fest and maybe the bar b qued turkey wings since I believe they're near the blues tent. Then I'll top it all off with somemore seafood Au Gratin for desert & some swimps at Liuzzas. :)

Crawfish bread for breakfast, spinach artichoke casserole, rosemint tea (LOTS, unsweet), PQA gumbo, Mr. Williams pies (Lar gets for next day breakfast), and CRAWFISH MONICA (so simple yet so sublime). Must try this year: duck po-boy, cracklins, and grilled chicken livers. The jama-jama plate is pretty good if you like cooked spinach and they give you lots (be sure to add hot sauce). Also the crawfish sack/oyster patties/crawfish beignet plate is yummy but very filling - must share.

To fight hangovers, the Mango Freeze is a must... You buy two and apply directly to forehead until melted...Rinse and repeat...works like a charm. Then follow with lots of Cafe Au Lait
other than that bit of advice, Crawfish Monica, Seafood Mirliton Casserole, any type of poboy and Spinach Artichoke casserole
The Cochon de Lait po-boy is even worse! And most people can't even pronounce it. So don't bother with that one either.
SS Crab too. I really expect to see no line.

This seemed the appropriate thread in which to resurrect a little tribute to Crawfish Monica that a friend of mine wrote after attending the 2002 fest. Enjoy.
A One Act Play By Gil:
The Scene:
[Gil faces the audience and is reclined in his folding, camping chair. He is nearly napping near the Sprint stage at Jazz Fest 2002. A swinging band plays in the background. He's wearing a "You Can't Clap If You're Holding A Beer" beer huggy with a partially filled can of beer that, despite his semi-conscious state, he sips periodically. He's tanned and handsome. The weather is partly cloudy and pretty warm as it is around 1 p.m. Eleanore enters from stage left.]
Eleanore: You've got to try this!
Gil: Hmm?
Eleanore: You've got to try this shrimp thing. It's yummy.
Gil: Looks like crawfish to me.
Eleanore [rolling eyes]: Whatever. Try it.
Gil: Who in the world would want to that creamy, heavy stuff on a hot day like this? I mean it's gotta be 90 degrees out! And the air is practically thick with humidity. Didn't they have anything else? I thought I asked for a Shrimp Po-boy anyway.
Eleanore: The line was too long. Why don't you just try this?
Gil [Knowing he's going to hate it, but tries it anyway]: It's not bad. [Pause for further reflection] Kinda spicy. [Gil returns the cup of food to Eleanore] I'll go over there in little bit and see what else they have.
Eleanore: Suit yourself.
Gil: What’s it called anyway?
Eleanore: The sign said Shrimp Carolyn or Madeline. Something like that.
Gil: Looks like crawfish.
Eleanore: Oh, right. CRAWFISH Monica. Here, hold this a second while I get a beer. Want one?
Gil [Taking the cup from Eleanore]: Sure. That'd be great.
[Eleanore crosses toward stage right where there is a purple, soft-sided beer cooler. Gil gobbles the rest of the Crawfish Monica. Eleanore returns with two beers.]
Eleanore [Stunned]: What happened to my crawfish Monica?
Gil [Looking guilty but penitent]: I ate it. I'm sorry.
Eleanore: I thought it was too hot. I thought it was too sticky to eat something that was so thick and creamy?
Gil: Well, it's really good. No, I mean really, really good. [Lights are lowered. Spotlight on Gil]
El, I'm really sorry that I ate your Crawfish Monica. And while I know it was wrong to do it, I must tell you I found a greater truth at the end of that little plastic fork. How many times in life do we defer to later the truly wonderful things that life has to offer now? We're too busy. We can't afford it. Maybe even: we don't deserve to treat ourselves to something special. And how about all the times we think we have it all figured out about some thing, some body or some activity after just half a glance. I’m don’t have….Nobody’s got all the angles covered. You have to experience this world. You’ve got to look at it…and look at it closely; you’ve got to hold it in your hands; you’ve got to smell it; [holding up the empty crawfish Monica cup] sometimes, you’ve got to taste it. Your work will always be there. It won’t miss you or welcome you back when you return. Your money in the bank can’t sustain, entertain or maintain you until you put it into action. This time we have together with friends is the key to a successful life. Enjoying good food and fun times is the yardstick to measure a life well-lived. Not an account balance. Not a fancy title. It’s what you do and who you do it with and who thinks it’s OK that you do it with them. That’s what matters. That’s the hook to hang a lifetime of memories on. [Standing up and getting a little self-righteous] Too darned often we just “pass” on the crawfish Monica of life. We have to learn to indulge and reward ourselves. We have to feed something more than just our bellies. We have to seek out those wondrous, spicy, rich moments in life and gobble them up whenever we are lucky enough to have them cross our paths. In life, as it is with Jazz Fest, it’s all about the crawfish Monica. [Dramatic pause. Gil takes a step or two toward center stage]. Can’t you see? It’s all about the crawfish Monica.
[Lights up. Gil turns to face Eleanore]:
Eleanore: Wow. That’s was a really nice speech.
Gil: Thanks.
Eleanore: And it was really deep.
Gil: [Gil smiles shyly with hands in pockets and looks down at his feet]
Eleanore: Now shut up and get me another crawfish Monica!
Gil: Right away! [Gil trots off stage left as Eleanore plops down in Gil’s vacated seat and pops open one of the beers. Fade to black.]

MGD or Icehouse or Lite or fosters -- open, drink and repeat.
In addition to those things mentioned -- Mighty Beans are nice, sauteed greens, creole stuffed bread.
Are the shrimp soft tacos back this year? I do miss them along with the Garlicky Oysters.

Everything there is good (well, there are different levels of goodness, but nothing is bad)...my faves are no different than those already mentioned. But I like to liven things up a bit by taking a few favorites sold individually and combining them. Sometimes the sum of the combination is more than that of the individual parts.
Exhibit A: Grab yourself some Boudin Balls and then mosey on over to the Crawfish Sack window. Voila...a spicey Ball/Sack combo. Consume with ice cold beer.

No, Al, they are not. The balls that Ed Schweddy is famous for were sweet, baked balls. And Chef, from South Park, was renowned for his Salty Chocolate Balls. However, to my palate, a savory ball is preferrable to a sweet ball. And, of course, none of the above come with a Sack. And everyone knows that balls without a sack are just, well, balls.

Lynn Vershad: Yeah. Well, M.J., Spring has sprung, and that mean the return of the great American pasttime - baseball.
Margaret Jo McCullen: And, of course, no baseball season would be complete without the culinary traditions of the ballpark.
Lynn Vershad: Mmm, that's right, M.J. And joining us to talk about them is someone whom I understand is an old friend of the Delicious Dish - Mr. Pete Scweddy.
[ Pete takes his seat behind the microphone ]
Margaret Jo McCullen: Hi, Pete. Welcome back.
Pete Schweddy: Hi, there.
Margaret Jo McCullen: Now, Pete, I hear that the only thing you love more than cooking, is the great game of baseball.
Pete Schweddy: Oh, yes. Sometimes, when I'm in the stands, I get so fired up and out of control, I've been known to boo the other team.
Margaret Jo McCullen: Ooh.. I'd want to steer clear of that.
Pete Schweddy: For sure.
Lynn Vershad: Now, Pete, you've gained quite a reputation as the king of stadium-cooked cuisine.
Pete Schweddy: That's right. I'm proud to say I've won great acclaim for my takes on popcorn, crackerjacks, and pretzel bread. But I think what I am most known for is my weiner.
Margaret Jo McCullen: your weiner. Wow. You don't say.
Pete Schweddy: I sure do. Would you like to see it?
Margaret Jo McCullen: Please. Please. [ Pete pulls out a tray of weiners ] Wow..
Pete Schweddy: Is that some weiner, or what?
Margaret Jo McCullen: Yeah, it's a doozy, Pete.
Lynn Vershad: Now, is that a foot-long, or..?
Pete Schweddy: [ chuckles ] You flatter me!
Margaret Jo McCullen: I have to say, Pete, that's a very thick one, too.
Pete Schweddy: I'd have to say it's almost as thick as it is long.
Margaret Jo McCullen: Now, I can smell your wiener from here.
Pete Schweddy: Well, that is thanks to the Schweddy Family recipe. There's no escaping the aroma of a Schweddy Family weiner.
Lynn Vershad: It, um.. it really does glisten, doesn't it?
Pete Schweddy: Uh, yeah, it's the weiners folks can't seem to keep out of their mouths.
Lynn Vershad: Well, then I bet it's a big hit with the kids.
Pete Schweddy: Oh, yes, indeed. There's nothing quite like the look on a child's face the moment he gets a hold of his own Schweddy weiner.
[ call lines start to light up ]
Margaret Jo McCullen: Wow, Lynn. the switchboard's really lighting up! We'll take your calls in a moment. But, first, I want to get my mouth around that weiner!
Pete Schweddy: Be my guest. Both of you ladies please have a go at it.
[ Margaret Jo and Lynn grab a Schweddy weiner ]
Lynn Vershad: Hmm.. I'm not sure I can handle this much meat..
Pete Schweddy: Well, you really don't have to put the whole thing in your mouth at once.
Lynn Vershad: Maybe we can cut it half?
Pete Schweddy: I'd rather you didn't!
Margaret Jo McCullen: Wow, Pete, this weiner's so plump and firm. The weiners I'm accustomed to are usually wrinkled and grey. The phones are relaly going crazy - is it okay if we take a call?
Pete Schweddy: Oh, be my guest.
Margaret Jo McCullen: Okay. [ presses call button ] Delicious Dish. You're on the air.
Lynn Vershad: Do you have a question for Pete Schweddy?
Caller: [ breathing heavily ] Yeah! Tell me about your weiner, Pete!
Pete Schweddy: Well, what would you like to know?
Caller: Do you touch it!
Pete Schweddy: Well, sure, I'm very hands-on with the famous Schweddy weiner.
Caller: Are you touching it now!
Pete Schweddy: Uh.. no, I'm not. The ladies are enjoying my weiner right now, actually. Any other waurions?
Caller: [ moans exuberantly ] Nooooooo, I'm all done..! Thanks..! [ hangs up ]
Margaret Jo McCullen: Well, thanks for calling.
Lynn Vershad: [ eating the weiner ] Mmm.. I just can't keep your weiner out of my mouth.
Margaret Jo McCullen: Mmm-mmm.. it's delicious!
Lynn Vershad: [ starts choking on the weiner ]
Margaret Jo McCullen: Uh-oh! Uh-oh!
Pete Schweddy: What's wrong?
Margaret Jo McCullen: I think Lynn's gagging on your weiner..
Pete Schweddy: Bend her over! Bend her over!
Margaret Jo McCullen: [ pushes Lynn forward ] Just relax your throat, Lynn! Just relax!
Pete Schweddy: [ pats Lynn's back ] Let it slide out.
[ Lynn cough the weiner out of her throat ]
Margaret Jo McCullen: You alright?
Lynn Vershad: Boy.. that was scary for a minute.. but.. if I had to gag on a weiner, I'm glad it was yours, Pete.
Pete Schweddy: Well, I'm glad my Schwddy weiner didn't disappoint you.
Margaret Jo McCullen: Well, that's all the time we have here on the Delicious Dish. Join us next week, when our guest will be..

I dive into all the wonderful fresh seafood that isn't common up here: mudbugs & spider sandwiches first. I attempt to try something new each year, but it's hard to do when you have favorites. My goal is to eat all the way around the racetrack, i.e., one item from each vendor. Haven't succeeded.
But, with Thursday back, I encourage some of you Bi-Weekenders to try!

I don't even know where to begin. The food is to die for....scrumptious....and anything I've tried was great! You can't make a bad choice! A few people mentioned how good the fried chicken is at fest....which I've never had. I imagine it is superb.....but it's very hard to make room for something as filling as that....since I always make sure to get my annual favorites. One of them being the oyster sack/crawfish patty combo plate:)(forgetting the 3rd item on that plate for some reason). Now I'm a big eater, but even I can only eat so much (without getting immobilized....I DO want to dance at fest after all!) So, after a day of trying this and that.....and of course, a dessert (or two), fried chicken just sounds too filling....and yet I'm dying to try it. I am going all 7 days...so I will try and squeeze it in. Mmmmm.....now I'm starting to obsess on the white chocolate bread pudding!

It may have been mentioned here before--didn't scroll through the whole thread--but remember the oriental place that used to be over by the grandstand? They had a dish that was noodles, carrots, meat, mint and a peanut sauce. I am not describing it very well. I LOVED it. And it was so light--perfect for those really hot days. They have not been back since the Thing and I really miss it. That was my favorite fest food.

Oooohhh.. All this talk about food! I just gotta jump in here!
Lets see....I always make sure I start my visit to New Orleans with a morning trip to Cafe Dumont for cafe au lait and beignets - and I eat every crumb! When I'm done, I am covered in powdered sugar & look like some kinda cocaine addict or something! LOL Then at the Fest, I must admit I have only limited experience with the food....however, I really enjoyed the mudbug pie, and I just LOVED the pralenes! How do you say it in N'Awlins?? Prah-lins?? In Texas, we say, Pray-leenz. Hee Hee.
And I cannot leave NOLA without making a trip to Ye Olde College Inn, where John Blancher's son Johnny serves me a delicious plate of shrimp romelade (sp) and fried green tomatoes! Then, with my dinner receipt in hand, I am guaranteed free admittance to the Rock N Bowl down the street, where I dance off all the sinful calories I consumed. OK, so I do more damage with Stoli and cranberry drinks during the evening, but heck WE'RE IN NEW ORLEANS!
(guess I better ramp up the exercise routine in preparation! Ha, ha)
Dang, can't wait, can't wait, can't wait!!

I miss it too - cool, minty and fresh tasting. They had Shrimp with cold vermicelli too. I'd eat there several times during Fest.

i loved the glass noodles. its one thing my stomach liked when it was 100 degrees outside. but they have not returned. i read this years list with the hope they were back, but did not see them. here's wishing i'm a bad reader and someone will tell us where to find them at the fest.
ps - that set of food stands outside the grandstand no longer exists.
