Now, I just have to figure out when I'm gonna squeeze this in to my short weekend. :D

Glad you asked. I was just wondering the same thing today, esp re my first meal. My flight gets into N.O. on the 22nd at 11:30am. By the time I get to the Royal Hol Inn it will be past my normal eating time, so I know I will be hungry, and needing to find someplace near hotel. As this is my first time staying in the quarter, any suggestions would be appreciated. I know the hotel is possibly an option, but have no idea what that would be like.
At the Fest, I always plan on having some things I have not had before, as well as my favorites, and getting feedback from fellow diners as to what they are enjoying.

Terry, don't plan on getting checked into the HI before 4pm. But they will probably allow you to "Pre-register" and stash your bags in the bellroom. If you don't "pre-register" when you get there, you might have to do it at 4pm and still stand in line twice to check in. At least that's how it's been in years past.
I get in about the same time -as of now- on Weds, the 23 and will also be starving. I'm thinking of trying Cafe Madea just across Canal on Common - same street, different name - but then there's the Gumbo Shop for a good quick meal and then there's the urge to beat the crowd to Drago's for a welcoming upscale lunch before heading to Lafayette Sq for some brass band. And then there's always Johnny's Poboy on St Louis or the street car to Mandena's on Canal, and then....and then.....I'm FOMSing on Food!!!

Thanks to the initiative of some ThreadHead friends of mine, I'll be having dinner on my first night in NOLA (4/24) at K-Paul's. Thanks, Deb.
An old friend of mine (Banu Gibson) is playing 4/26 at Donna's. so that's where I'll be then.
Other than that, I'll be in "play by ear" mode.

We've got rezs the first weekend at Jacques Imos, Cuvees, Commanders (Sunday brunch) and Cochon (lunch on Tues. 3/29) with a crew of 7. But the second weekend, me and Lar are in my favorite food/music town on our own so any suggestions for moderately priced yummies would be much appreciated. I love Galitoires. The crab Maison is delicious and living in the parched Southwest a cool crab salad does a body good! We always ask to sit in the downstairs dining room and ask for John the Cajun to be your waiter - be prepared for bawdy jokes and awesome service. We always get the seafood special and the oysters brouchette - incredible!! Bayona is lovely and Susan Spicer is a genious (love the sweetbreads and everything there) - ack!! gotta get back there (FOOD FOMS!!!).

I will confess that I have yet to get to Port O Call....so this is the year! Other than that, I will play it by ear: a little fairgrounds, maybe a little Mothers (if time permits me to stand in line), Central Grocery, du Monde, Johnny's Po-Boys.
And those ersters at Drago's look and sound fantastic! :D
I should dig up the restaurant thread from last year, it was great...

I think I'm mostly gonna eat in my hood for fest so I'll be at or getting takeout at some of these: Praline Connection, La Peniche, Lazizza's, Verdi Mart, Croissant D'or, Angeli's, Fiorella's.
Terry, Palace Cafe is just around the corner from the HI on Canal. If they can't seat you right away, you can likely get a seat at the bar. Also Acme Oyster House is just down Royal and then left on Iberville. Also in the area is REd Fish Grill-one block over on Bourbon.

Same with us, first time in the Quarter, makes me feel like a virgin all over again! LOL Our flight gets in at 8:45pm, with only 30 min layover in Orlando, so we probably won't have time to eat there, and will be starved by the time we get the shuttle or cab to our first hotel on Conti, near Royal... so we do we go to grab a bite around 10:30 at night?

French Quarter Deli & Grocery, 806 Conti, Near Burbon
From Welp in December 2007.
French Quarter Deli & Grocery just opened a little over a month ago, but I have a feeling they will do really well with their location, hours and menu. Their menu is extensive, including appetizers (Mac & Cheese Bites, Crawfish Pistolettes, meat and crawfish pies, etc.), burgers, breakfast sandwiches, chicken wings, po' boys and other deli sandwiches, pastas (Peanut Chicken Pasta, XX Chili Pasta, Linguine with Garlic Butter Sauce and all sorts of add-ons, etc.) fresh salads, and much, much more. They carry all kinds of beverages, liquors, wines and beers which, yes, they will gladly deliver along with your food order. They are open and will deliver from the morning until the wee hours (3am on weekdays and 4am on weekends).
I'm so glad this place opened. Perfect for that special grocery/deli fix towards the Canal-side of the Quarter (see Verti Marte for goodness on the opposite end of the Quarter towards Esplanade).

Any of the Brigtsen's brigade doing dinner there Thursday the 24th? Have ressies for my Dad and I that evening.
Aside from that, Coop's and Angeli for late night. CDM, Old Coffee Pot, Petunia's and Elizabeth's for brecky. Irene's or Adolfo's for post-fest dinner.
And, of course, Fest food for lunches.
It's been a long standing JazzFest tradition to go to the Acme Oyster Bar first thing in the morning. A dozen and a Dixie is a great way to start the day. Since we're staying close, I see a trip to Mothers in our future as well.

Google the Hilton Riverside, it's inside. The address is 2 Poydress and it's adjacent to Harrah's casino and next to the Shops at Canal Place, according to the site. Basically walk or take the Canal St car toward the river as far as it goes before it turns to go toward Esplanade, get off and walk to your right. The Hilton says the street car is at the front door but I don't believe that's the Canal line.

Can't believe 52 posts and none of my favorites mentioned?! Well, maybe just a couple.....How about right by the Jazz Fest? Lola's on Esplanade is super!! Cafe Degas right there is super too! The Italian spot where Gabrielle's used to be is good-La Vita. All near Liuzza's. One of my favorites is Ye Olde College Inn on Carrollton-owned by John Blancher(Roc N Bowl). Doubt it is true at Fest time, but the rest of the year, you get a free pass to Roc n Bowl with an entree! If you get tired of fried food, try the Cafe Rani on Magazine-best salads in NOLA!! And lastly, not leastly, Parkway BAkery and Po Boys, omg!!!

Peristyle
Petunia's
Court of Two Sisters
And if you don't want to get too dressed up:

In no particular order we will be at Grand Isle, Cochon, Commander's for dinner late Sunday night with a krewe of 8, popeyes take out(ditto Jenn), drago's, elizabeth's for breakfast at least once, and K-paul's and goodness knows what else on the fairgrounds. Boy, I'm going to need to walk 3 miles each morning with that lineup.....crow. But we'll be there for two weeks - so it's not too bad when it is spread out over that long.

I think I will be leaving Tuscaloosa that day around 2 or 2:30. It will take me about four hours to get to my mom's and drop off the chicklet. I then have to freshen up and then drive to New Orleans (that takes 45 minutes). So I prolly wouldn't be able to get there until around 7:30 or 8:00. Is that too late?

They call 'em grinders in Maui, but they aren't hollowed out & filled. Not what I'd exactly call a po' boy, either, because they don't hold a candle to what you get in New Orleans.
OTOH, though, I would either expect to receive a blank expression or a pole dancer if I stepped up and ordered a grinder in New Orleans.:)

Just that no one down here would know what a grinder is :-)
To us if it's on french bread its a po-boy..
every thing else is just a sammich...
around 75% would know a SUB is a sandwitch.. but only because of
SUBWAY.. and they think that it is called that because it is a chain that
must have started in New York..
20% might know that there is such a thing as a HOGIE (sp?) but they are sure
that they never had one.. and would not like it if they did...
Grinder... I bet my wife has never ever heard that term.

Perfectly acceptable...
Po-boys don't have to be dressed..
ANd I love the BBQ shrimp from Liuzza's..
but for the BEST fried shrimps po-boy.. my vote is for Mandina's on Canal..
And I prefer to get mine with just butter and pickle..
I'll add catsup (ketchup) and hot sauce when I get it home..
Mandina;s really is the far and above 1000% better than the next best New Orleans style creole itallian restaurant in the city... BUt we don't want a lot of out of town jazz festers there cause the lines are way too long already. :-)

Deanie's has always served me well too and it's cool to be able to eat at the bar solo. I didn't realize it was so close until just lately. But when I go, I'll be walking on Canal.
I'm anxious to try Coop's Place for the 1st time. Been reading some great things about their rabbit jambalya (you know, that rice dish) on Yelp.
And I want to thank whoever posted about the croissant bakery on Ursalines. That's another must-try for me this year.

I LOVE Verdi Mart. I'll be in that hood too...my favorite side of the Quarter. Have fridge so will definitely stock up at the Verdi. Croissant D'or is another favorite. Have you ever been to Irene's? They don't take ressies, but are phenenomenal. I have the best soft shell crab there ever....fancy Italian.

Thanks for the info. I might be able to do something "light" for lunch. Lunch usually works best for me anyway, if they serve late enough. Some places in NOLA such as Mr B's serve lunches up until 3 or 4 o'clock. Now I wonder if they have a senior discount...just kidding.

My favorite place in the FQ for a quickie meal or a late night snack is Coop's on Decatur...its a little dive bar that has some killer food...order the jambalaya supreme (has rabbit, etc.) and get your significant other to order the seafood gumbo (xtra seafood)...trade bowls back and forth until finished (repeat as necessary)...mmmmm.

Also if you don't have room service and you end up so hung over from shots one day, you can call St. Ann’s Deli - 800 Dauphine ($) -delivery - 529-4421.

Everything at Coops is good. Get some andouille sausages and red beans.
Croissant D'Or on Ursulines is great. Open early too, if you're out late/early enough.
You don't need to take a bus to the French Market...well where on Canal are you, near the CBD? Walk down to the River and catch the Riverfront street car to get to the market. It's not a bad walk either.
