Still trying to get through The World that Made New Orleans. Very slowly. Early history - really helps you understand how the culture was shaped. Tedious reading sometimes, tho.

What's the name of it? I read "Jazz Funeral'' on the plane to Jazz Fest last year, a fun bit of investigative fiction written by Julie Smith.
It was a great pre-read before festival and would like to do something similar this year.

Sorry for my earlier wise-@ss response, Terry. I actually just finished Jeff Hannusch's "I Hear You Knockin' -- The Sound of New Orleans Rhythm and Blues". Pretty good book, telling the stories of:
Tuts Washington
Professor Longhair
Huey "Piano" Smith
James Booker
Allen Toussaint
Roy Brown
Dave Bartholomew
Cosimo Matassa
Dr. Daddy-O (a NO DJ)
Johnny Vincent, Joe Banashak (NO record guys)
Marshall Sehorn
"Boogie" Bill Webb
Guitar Slim (maybe the most interesting story in the book)
Earl King
Shirley Goodman (of Shirley & Lee)
Dorothy Labostrie
Irma Thomas
Lee Allen
Smiley Lewis
James "Sugar Boy" Crawford
Johnny Adams
Bobby Mitchell
Chris Kenner
Bobby Marchan
Frankie Ford
Jessie Hill
King Floyd
Ernie K-Doe
Lee Dorsey

It's an informative book and I enjoyed it. I've ordered Hannusch's follow-up, "The Soul of New Orleans -- A Legacy of Rhythm and Blues" from LMF.

I have "The World that Made New Orleans..." on hold at the library. That appears to be a fascinating read.

The Bored! Honestly have no other time for anything else! I go away for the weekend and there are literally 100's if not a 1000 new posts! Help! I cant keep up!

I'll find something to read on the plane ride down. Probably the Zagat guide to New Orleans I got for free thanks to someone who posted a great link!

Once I'm there though, All the free publications such as Where Yat, The Jazzfest Bible, New Orleans Magazine & Where always keep me busy reading and planning!

Tuning in with Saxon, Dreyer & Tallant Gumbo Ya-Ya - Louisiana Folk Tales, should do the trick.

There's also another freebie, Gumbo in the title, and I really like the profiles of all the acts in Offbeat Magazine.
