April 2008 Snug Harbor Splashes
It's Festival time. There's the one in the French Quarter from the 11th to
the 13th and, now that Louisiana Derby winner Pyro and company have vacated
the racetrack, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival will take over the
Fairgrounds infield once again on the 25th. This April, Snug Harbor has a
veritable shower of good music for you, doing our part to help keep that
festival spirit going all night and all month long.
Si! Si! y Oui! Oui!: Snug brings international flair to the showroom this
month. Born in Havana and presently living in New York, Grammy nominated
guitarist/songwriter Juan-Carlos Formell returns to Snug for shows on April
5th and 6th. Clarinet virtuoso Evan Christopher has split time between
Paris and New Orleans since the Federal Flood. On Sunday the 13th he
features his European aggregation, Django a la Creole. That's the first of
two nuits Francais for on the 24th, the French string trio Samarabalouf , in
the midst of their "Tournee U.S.A.," bring their ethereal update of the
Gypsy jazz style to the aptly named Frenchmen Street. Originally from
Germany (Ja! Ja!), Big Easy Award nominee saxophonist Martin Krusche, now a
New Orleanian, showcases his Magnetic Ear on Thursday the 17th.
EXTRA, EXTRA: special free shows by the students and teachers of the
acclaimed New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation's Heritage School of
Music will be presented the first three Sundays of April (6th, 13th & 20th)
from 5 - 6:30 in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month . Come see
tomorrow's jazz stars today along with veterans like Leah Chase, Jesse
McBride and Brent Rose!
Real New Orleans: On the 10th we feature Dr. John's favorite trumpeter
Charlie Miller with his alliterative Bif Bam Boom Band. The Crescent City's
First Lady of Jazz Germaine Bazzle graces the stage on Saturday the 19th and
on the following night, Connie Jones (another towering NOLA trumpeter) joins
forces with piano master Tom McDermott to celebrate the release of their new
compact disc.
Piano ProFestival: A legend of American Music, that singular hit machine
Allen Toussaint comes to Snug Harbor on Saturday the 26th. Come spend a
Southern Night. And another professor of the 88s, Henry Butler brings a
group of modern jazz all-stars to Snug on Sunday the 27th. And once again,
Snug host the annual Piano Summit with Marcia Ball, Tom McDermott and Joe
Krown on the 30th.
May Day(s): On Thursday the 1st, New Orleans native Donald Harrison, the
King of Nouveau Swing, works a double as he totes his tenor sax (and
Quartet) from the Jazzfest Fairgrounds to the Snug. His old partner, Grammy
winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard also does double duty on
the 3rd when he's featured with the LPO in the afternoon, and then spends
the evening with us. And don't forget your shot of espresso on festival
weekend nights for the notorious One O'Clock Jumps featuring Amina Figuerova
Sextet on the 25th, Delfeayo Marsalis Quintet on the 26th, John Ellis'
Doulble Wide on May 2nd and the Monk Institute Ensemble on the 3rd. We be
swinging that jazz music into the wees!
