The recent thread about Woody Allen got me thinking about the early years of Jazzfest. Inevitably, change...progress? has taken place. We can ( and do) discuss the merits of more bna's, chairs in the fields, even internet on the grounds ( either a horror, or a Godsend depending on your perspective), but
what I happily believe is that there would be a consensus amongst us that what has not deviated from the early days, indeed what continues to be its raison d'etre, is the committment to honor, and showcase the treasures of this unique culture, and to embrace this music. When you think about it- that is no small thing. No wonder Jazzfest inspires the loyalty it does in all of us. No wonder so many of us are counting the days.......

Would you boys behave for just one thread?;)

I would like to know more about the totums. When did they start? have they always been around?

BNA's have always been around? Yes/No. I have read the very early history somewhere but are there folks (I bet there are) who have been attending since the inception? Gotta be some improvements made and some things that have been removed.

I would think that Mahalia Jackson would be considered a BNA, and she was at the first one.....(and if she wasn't considered one, she should have been!;) )

there has been numerous threads about the totems in the past. i will try to find, but they seem to fall off after 365 days.
a few years back there was a women, cant remember her name but she was on the pet de kat chat, not sure if she did the forum, anyway she was gathering data for a book about the totems. i dont think it was every published. anyone have additional knowledge of this?
the book shown on a recent thread about the History of Jazz Fest has a lot of that type of info. you'd think i could remember the title since i purchased several copies as presents when it came out a few years ago, and i still have 2 copies.

How's that for history...the meters as kind of an "opening" act at fest and Pete Fountain, a timeless New Orleans performer who hopefully is feeling healthy enough this year to perform
