View Full Version : Carry on chair and umbrella ?

I just called Delta and they said you are allowed to carryone, in addition to your suitcase, one additional item, plus a small item. I asked specifically if in addition to my suitcase, could I carry on backback, plus my chair and umbrella in a packed bag, and rep said she thought it would be ok.
If my memory serves me right, and as a senior that is definitely not always the case, but it seemed to me that last year, when I thought I might have to check the rolled up chair and umbrella, the gal at baggage check in told me I could carry it on, in addition to my back back and suitcase ,and that's what I did. Of course my chair is one of those small ones.

I'd be a little leery. Since I think Delta is (or will be) charging for a second Checked bag, more folks will be using the max size of carry-on, leaving less room in the cabin overheads and under seats. You may want to check back with them once they have a little more experience with the new baggage rules.
Maybe attach your chair to your backpack or carry-on to make it look like it's one piece? Get creative!
I traveled with my roll-a-chair in (actually sticking out of) my backpack. My main concern was not the airline, but TSA. Would they see the metal chair legs as a weapon?
In fact, it was fine. I cleared security both ways, no questions asked.

Terry, probably the only thing I'd re-confirm would be the size of the aircraft that will be in service for your flight. On the smaller craft, you sometimes have to gate-check a lot of stuff that you can normally carry on board.

I have checked my chair (with my parasol inside the case/cover) in the past, but if now they're charging for that, depending on how much it costs - I might FedEx or ship it to wherever I'm staying (or folks are more than welcome to ship them to me - I'll be happy to be the chair/parasol valet). :)

Yep...if you are flying 'regional' jets (what I call the RV of jets). Actually checking at the gate is the best thing of all. All the advantages of carry-on without having to actually hoist the stuff into the overheads!

That's actually a big one. The jet that flies out of Lynchburg to Atlanta only has 12 rows. Then there's the crop-duster that US Air flies from here to Charlotte. I told my boss that I refuse to fly on it--scares the cr*p out of me.

I was going to hitch a ride with a friend in his little 2 seater Tango until I realized that a weeks worth of "stuff /shoes" would not fit in the shelf behind the seats. Just another reason I own a station wagon.

is the sable the mercury version of the ford taurus? you have some little suitcases. :D
maybe you could do some shopping for people who are flying in and bring them the stuff they need, and in addition to reimbursing you for the items they would show their appreciation in the form of festival beverages.
its a win/win.

I know that I would prefer to drive and not worry about this stuff, but I don't have time so I'm flying. I have a big duffel for the chairs and an umbrella and most of my clothing. But the carry on thing changes every time I fly. I would really like to bring a guitar and I'm not sure how they would cope with that. I would even settle for my little Martin Backpacker, which is tiny. That and my small carry on would be perfect.
Anybody else ever try this? It should fit overhead pretty easily... if they let me bring it aboard.

Last year one guy on my flight had a guitar. The flight crew was less than impressed and wanted to check it. He immediately donned a look of despair - knowing what checking an instrument could bring. He was cool and polite about it - and said, well, if that's what has to happen...so be it. As soon as he said that - the guy in front of him said 'are you out of your Fu@##@$ mind? It will be a box of splinters !!" and got up to get his stuff out of the overhead bin. then a couple of other people did the same - shoved stuff all kinds of places and then back on top of the case.
Bottom line - the entire flight was filled with people who were going to fest and the majority of them 'got it' . It's a calculated risk - but if you fly the right airline and at the right time (later at night - like 7 or 8 pm on ) - it can totally work out for you.

You must work for a really good airline :).
Actually, I have to say, the airlines have gotten really, really, good at reducing damage. I haven't really had a problem in a long time. The airline that I fly, with a hub in Newark - is really very good at a lot of things...including customer service - which is a lost art everywhere....

It's a -tiny- guitar (with tone to match)

And it will fit overhead, easily. I am pretty sure it will fit on top of the other stuff up there in most situations. If they let me bring it on board, it will fit somewhere. If I check it, toothpicks.

As a matter of fact I do, al. But that's not what I asked PC.
One of the funniest quotes from "The 40 Year old Virgin":
"I hope you have a big trunk, because I'm putting my bike in it."

Sounds like a great idea, but I have two questions.
#1. How do I know what is a regional jet?
#2 Would this work with a connecting flight, which I have?

regional jets are the small planes , 100 seats or less....just a note , us air no longer gate checks on any flight , everything tagged at gate goes to baggage, except strollers , wheel chairs , gutiars..etc

Regionals are typically 100 seaters or less. If you go to the airlines web site you shoulld find the aircraft type for your flight listed. It doesn't matter though since you'll have carry-0n regardles, no? If it is a regional jet they will tag your larger carry-on and give you a stub. Then you leave it in the designated area which is right there at the end of the jetway before you board the plane. Then when you exit that plane at the end of the flight, the bag will be waiting for you right outside the plane. If you have a connectioing flight, you just carry it to the next gate, rinse, repeat.

Speaking of blowing, Northworst just announced a second bag fee of $25, and an overweight (50lb+) fee of $50, up from $25! Goes into effect on May 5, which means I'm good going down, but not coming back which is usually the heavier trip!
NWA, like all the other airlines so far except Delta, is waiving the fees for tickets bought before the new fees were announced.
AA will likely announce similar soon.

BELLEVUE, OH -- A man in central Ohio is accused of having sex with his picnic table.
The investigation began when a tipster gave police three DVDs showing Arthur Price having sexual intercourse with a metal round table on his deck.
The incidents occurred between January and March 2008.
Police say the DVDs show Price involved in a sex act in his bedroom. He walks out to his deck, tilts the table on its side and has sex with it.
Police say Price lives near an elementary school.
Price admitted that he had sex with the picnic table when police questioned him.
He confirmed to police the incidents caught on the DVDs and said he had also had sex with the table inside the home.
Price faces four counts of public indecency. He is free on a $20,000 bond.
