I wanted everyone to know that Jazz Fest will recycle again this year. For those of you that don't know, recycling in New Orleans is next to impossible to do. There are some local grass roots groups as well as Phoenix recycling who are trying to make an impact but none of this is supported by the city. We will even have to drive some of our our materials out of town. But the Festival feels that it is our responsibility to set an example for the city and to help do our part for the earth. So we will have recycle stations around the grounds - near beer booths and food booths and near some stages - but it will take you doing your part and actually taking your cans and plastic back to the stations and not just leave it on the ground.
We know you love the Festival, and we need help spreading the word, and getting the cans and plastic in the right places.
Thank you and happy Jazz Fest.

Great news, Festy Dave! Since you have visitors from all over the world, some of us are already used to this idea. It's great that the Fest is willing to use its stature to set this kind of example, not to mention take responsibility for the waste generated by the event!

I am thrilled to hear this -- I lead a team that supports almost 105 sponsorships and events for Canada's second largest telco -- and this year we've created several event-related environmental strategies. We took a real close look at the best practises in the U.S. in this area, and included several festivals in our research. I have always wondered how the recycling works at Fest, hard to believe that all the stuff left at the fairgrounds actually does wind up in the right place! I think it's called single-stream recycling...
I hope there are plans to communicate the environmental good that the Fest will do. It's a big part of our strategy. You can do great stuff, but if you don't tell people you are doing it, they won't see it or remember it.
Great news!

IBut the Festival feels that it is our responsibility to set an example for the city and to help do our part for the earth.
Thank you. It is a great example when an institution like Jazz Fest is willing to go so far beyond the requirements set by government.
The lack of a local recycling mandate is anachronistic, irrresponsible and just plain selfish. The Festival is expending extra effort to go green and this should be advertised and celebrated. I hope that the community gets the message.
And I hope we festival goers do our part and pick up after ourselves a little. On the individual level, even if you do a little extra when your neighbor fails to...it just isn't that hard.

Once a month David drives our cardboard & cans to the Green Project and every 3 months or so, they have plastic recycling under the Claiborne overpass where we can drive our plastic.
We will be happy to go out of our way at Fest to recycle and pass the word onto others.
Thanks Festy.

So, the fest is recycling beer cans, and pet bottles???
Will you be recycling wine bottles, too?
Probably way too late for this year, but with so many forks, spoons and paper waste, the fest should consider using degradable utensils so the food and paper waste can be composted.

I first started recycling when I lived in Boulder back in '95, but here in the great City of New York, it's required by law to recycle. Residential buildings will get fined if trash and recyclables are not separated. You gotta love the NY attitude when it comes to everything -- recycle or GET FINED!

It always amazes me how much trash people leave on the ground in front of the stages. One thing the Threadhead nation can do is pick up others' trash as well as their own whenever they head to the trash barrels. There's enough of us that we could definitely make a difference.
I'm very happy about as well. We've been recycling stuff for many, many years now.... I think this is great and if everone will do their part, it CAN make a difference.... Now, what can we do to "clean up" the port-a-pottys.....HA!!!

Hi All,
First of all KUDOS to JazzFest for their recycling efforts! I was so glad to see the collection bins last year.
We have free curbside recycling and green cycle in Santa Cruz. There are two biodiesel fuel stations in my some what small town. My employer has the largest solar installation in the county and allows me to charge my electric scooter at work. I feel really blessed to live in such a green minded community.
VWGal, we have a lot of green festivals in California, my favorite of all being the Harmony Festival every June in Santa Rosa. Alas, this year I have to be in another state for a family reunion.....SOME DAY I'll get to see George Porter Jr. and Steve Kimock together but not at this year's Harmony Fest.
It is a zero trash event. All plates, forks, beer glasses etc. are compostable, recycle and compost bins every where and tons of green living vendors and education. They have water stations where you can refill your bottle for free. Most of the food vendors serve organic food. The event is biodiesel fueled. Not to mention a stellar music line up every year...
Usually their website has a ton of information about all this but as of today it says they are working on the '08 website, so bookmark this link and stay tuned. Tickets are currently on sale at the site: http://harmonywinterfestival.com/

Where will the recycling bins be located? Seems to me that if there were bins near every stage area and near every trash can, everyone will use them. If someone needs to walk to find a bin, they will just toss in the nearest trash can (or worse, just leave 'em on the ground).

I LOVE Harmony Festival!!! I was there last year before moving to NOLA, but I don't think I'll be able to be there this year :(
I really like the way they are trying to have as light a footprint as possible (other than the kick a** memories of great music that they leave with us) and am thrilled that Jazzfest is working towards that also. :)

well, I just looked at the map--not one recycling bin /station by any of the stages. too bad, it's such a good idea and it isn't being put to action very effectively. I just don't see anyone leaving the area where the music is with their cans in hand, in search of a recycling bin. it appears they aren't even near any of the beer tents, where, theoretically people might dump an empty while buying a refill.

We have 10 stations and some are near beer booths and some are near food areas. It is hard to put them everywhere (by the stages) because we have them staffed with a volunteer to prevent them being filled with trash.
Because the locations aren't super obvious we will need your help showing people the way. Collect a few cans when you go back to make a beer run.
We need you as our ambassadors.

Festydave, will there be any kind of notification that recycling is in effect? I know right now we are working off grassroots efforts but maybe a notice on the homepage for those who do not visit the bored, or maybe some simple signage at the various JF sponsored events in April? Get the word out to the locals as well as the people who will be sure to help in this effort, ya know? I know we are trying to minimize waste so big, honkin' neon signs might be overkill ;) but maybe a few strategically placed signs on the beer and soda vendors booths?

As another suggestion to the powers that be. You know how the crews move in between sets and pick up stuff? They could split peeps for cans and litter.
